Oculus Rift & Windows 10 Thread

For ED Im playing for quite some time on Win10 Preview and now release.
Currently Oculus 5.0.1 Runtime Works in Extended (Direct mode not possible). 6.x Didn't work yet for me.

As for Drivers I am on AMD and reverted back to 14.12 Omega (wddm 1.0 driver) for Win10 as the one delivered plus all the catalyst 15.x including 15.7 have much more judder in SC when the NPC spawn than the 14.12 one.

So I guess if you currently need Runtime 6.x or Direct mode which should not be required for ED only you should wait a bit.
Im only using my Windows box for ED on the DK2 so thats possible.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. I think I'll take the plunge and upgrade tonight. I have deliberately not looked at ANY screenshots of Win10. I have no idea what it is or does, I just know that I'm excited and really ready for a change up :)

Anyone got tips on how long it takes?

Kaii

I work in IT as well. I've had retail Windows 10 for about 2 weeks early through our enterprise licensing. I like Windows 10 but the drivers need serious work. We are seeing serious issues with solid state drives, some south bridge controllers on motherboards and a crap on of NVidia issue. Id hold of a few weeks in updating unless you just have to. Updated Oculus SDK and runtimes that officially support Windows 10 should be out in the next week or two as well.

Just saw this. Really appreciate it, I'm really happy you took the time to tell me. I think...I'm not going to listen though. I'm not in any major need to be able to play, and the excitement of a new OS and being there at the beginning through the birthing period seem worth it to me. If it means I'll have a bit or lots of trouble playing, I'll be ok. Moving house at the moment anyway, so happy to have an excuse.

Plus it is still possible to play Elite, which is all I really need anyway :)

Does view reset work for you? If so I'll reinstall ED and reset my bindings.

OK I guess it must have been a bindings issue. I have since reinstalled clean and encountered a few issues with the Oculus SDK. I'm just in the process of setting it all up again, I'll post my findings when I have actually tested some stuff.

I think from the majority of things I have been reading, if you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 your good to go.

However if you do a fresh install of Windows 10, when you come to install the Oculus runtime it installs certain parts but stops at the Oculus display driver and refuses to install even if try to install in compatability mode

Awesome, thanks for sharing

This is actually not true, if you set compatibility mode for Windows 8 and run the installer it will install the oculus display driver. You will then find that Windows 10 no longer boots.

Apparently I forgot to install a WDDM 1.3 driver which would prevent this from happening.

Also, without the oculus display driver the only thing non-functional is direct mode which didn't work for me after the upgrade anyway.

Once I have tested without the driver I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the clarification

Nice report!

I have actually been waiting for Windows 10 because with the Oculus Rift on Windows 7 there is that issue where CPUs are parked/unparked too often and we have to run a tool to unpark all CPUs before starting the game. Windows 8 doesn't have the park/unpark problem. I'm also year 77 so I'm really not looking forward to a new install of my OS lol. If we make backups and ghost images, do you think we'll be able to go back to Win7 if we don't like Win10?

Also with regards to the Oculus Rift, can we clarify what is stutter? To me the game itself doesn't stutter, if you look directly ahead without moving your head the game is silky smooth. But when you move your head side to side (shaking your head left and right) then you start to see the cockpit following your head left or right then goes back to where its meant to be, its very fast so you'll see it like a fast vibration in the cockpit everytime you move your head around. The stutter feels like a "head tracking delay" but its only present in Elite Dangerous, so it really isn't game stutter but "Head tracking stutter". Hardware wise I'm getting 95-105 fps at high settings (60 fps if supersampled) with about 60% gpu usage according to MSI Afterburner Riva Statistics. It is this thing that is breaking immersion for me and currently the most annoying problem (after the blurry text).

<game crashes when starting ED>

In your C:\Users\CMDRmaschkisiel\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics

There is a file called DisplaySettings.xml, in there you can change the monitor value from 0 to 1 (i think this sends the image to the extended monitor) this will prevent ED from crashing at the start. Its crashing because it doesn't know to send the image to the second monitor.. probably also because of the Reshade mirror to desktop thing they're both sending image to the primary monitor. (Are you using the Reshade mirror to desktop?)

As for the reset key bindings, have you rechecked your config file? In one of those parameters I think there is an option for "reset view orientation". Mine is not F12 anymore either I've set it to a different key.

You are asking a big question about being able to revert. There are lots of solutions, best to Google it. I hear that win 10 gives you the option to revert so look into it.

Stutter is basically low frame rate. When you look left and right you get mircro freezes that, as you say, feel like vibrations. They are image delays

I have installed windows 10 on 2 of my 3 systems one upgraded great the other not so well. It worked awesome for the OP I get that and that's great but everyone's system is different with small or big differences in hardware, when it was made ect ect. The point is that no one should assume that everything will go smoothly, upgrading is a risk and things can go wrong so be prepared back your stuff up before and be ready to reinstall your old system if things dont work correctly yet. I think windows 10 is great but its not completely ready yet and does not work well with every persons computer, yet so if you are not prepared to possibly go through some frustrations wait and give it some time before you upgrade.

Wise words, copied into the OP and +rep'd

Bought a little Asus atom laptop to keep in the car for the OBD today. Cheap little thing but runs nice enough. It came with Windows 8.1. Upgraded it to Windows 10.

The touchpad doesn't work. Power management, brightness, volume, hibernate doesn't work. Bluetooth doesn't work so it can't connect to the OBD. Updating the drivers didn't fix anything.

Downgraded it to 8.1 and all works as intended. What a complete waste of time.

Ach man what a nightmare - I hate stuff like that. I am cursed with my computer. I work in IT so it's not my incompetence, it's just curse. I can't add RAM - blue screens. I can't flash or update BIOS - wont boot. I had lots of trouble building a RAID. When I originally upgraded to Windows 8 it was blue screening and had to completely reinstall. I had an SSD and it was my OS drive, it died completely and I lost everything....

Thankfully, everything's gone well this time!

Small issues are cropping up - my sound drivers are not right. I can't get my 5.1 in headphones at the moment (have yet to fiddle). I can't full screen a youtube video if it's embedded. All my default programs have changed.

All in all, for ED working so much better, WORTH IT AND THEN SOME!

Hope you have better luck soon :)

Some internet boffin has dismantled the Creative X-Fi drivers and rebuilt them all for Win10. What a genius. Just got the drivers, Creative Panel, and most importantly DDL working again thanks to him.

If you have a X-Fi card here ya go: http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=720562

Installed 10 (update), had to watch a couple of youtube videos to get my NVidia driver installed and then to get the oculus runtime running in compatibility mode.

Direct to rift is currently broken so if you like the convenience of direct for other apps/demos then I'd hold off for updated runtime.

However, E D is now running better than ever. Managed to turn it up to High and even supersample (via NVidia control, not in game menu)... currently in orbit around an earth like, not sure if asteroids will be a problem yet but so far it looks like I have a bit more room to try settings before judder starts.
