I've mentioned this before, I'm even quoted saying this in the latest Q&A video by Obsidian Ant, but Odyssey is almost completely unplayable for me, and for people who feel as I do about combat.
So, yes, I've spent months now for my two Commanders taking Apex shuttles to remote stations with a "None" status collecting suits. This has finally finished when I at last found a Grade 3 Maverick suit with Night Vision for my main Commander. But There's still work to do. I want, no, let's be very clear, I need to be able to upgrade my Maverick and Artemis suits with modifications including extra backpack capacity, extra battery capacity, and other mods that are genuinely useful for anybody out exploring and discovering crash sites.
In Horizons if you find a crash site there will probably be a couple of Skimmers to destroy, but with that done from the SRV which isn't very difficult we're free to collect any cargo that can be found there. This just isn't the case with Odyssey where even if you find a site that's completely abandoned you can guarantee that it won't be abandoned for long and that the game will quickly pit you against other scavengers who want to kill you.
This is where the problem begins. I've never, ever played a first person shooter. They don't appeal to me, primarily because I'm rubbish at them. I have the reflexes of a giant oak tree and so actively avoid this type of gameplay. I'm okay with ship and SRV combat in Elite, but tend to pick my conflict zones carefully and never go in unless I have a very heavily armed and engineered ship.
I do want to be able to try the different aspects of Elite though, and am even forced to if I want to unlock some aspects of on-foot engineering like Air Reserves for my exploration suits. I gave it a go though but, as you might suspect, was awful at it and didn't last long. So I thought I'd practice sneaking around sites to steal at least some of the materials and data I'll need. I went to Iah Bulu which I'm told is a great system for it. I was okay sneaking around and even cutting my way into a quiet building and cupboards. Was there anything inside though that I could steal? Of course not! If I wanted to actually collect materials and data I have to take a more direct, more confrontational approach, which of course means combat.
So let's compare this to Horizons where, with the sole exception of Thargoid and Guardian materials and data, absolutely everything can be collected or traded for without ever having to engage in combat. There are even special planets we can go to where we can collect this stuff, like HIP 12099, Dav's Hope, and the crystal forest things outside the bubble. In Odyssey I am forced into first person combat in some form to collect anything at all... if I felt comfortable and wanted to play a first person shooter, I would play a first person shooter. I play Elite in no small part because it's never forced me to do that, until now.
So I therefore feel completely excluded from gameplay in Odyssey. I can't even upgrade my suits to make exploration better and more enjoyable. This is just wrong and I simply cannot understand why Frontier continue to ignore it, and why they continue to believe that first person gameplay must equal combat. This really does have to be addressed otherwise there will be plenty of players, such as myself, that just get bored and walk away.
