Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

Overall thoughts
The Galaxy and System maps do not seem to be designed around the most common use-cases for this tools.

Specific Issues
As an example, I cannot quickly set a route to a bookmarked station. The option to do this is buried in a "manage bookmarks" page. The primary purpose of bookmarks is not to be managed, it is to allow a cmdr to locate select/target/route to specific locations quickly.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
The for above example, just add a "Set As Destination" button on the bookmark list (or handle by holding mouse down, as in other places). However, the general comment here is about identify the most frequently used use-cases for these tools, and prioritizing those for effecient work-flows.

There are threads here and on Reddit, showing why and how Odyssey's rendering is b0rked.

If I could ask for one change, it would be to remerge the body info in the system map, so you can see all the info for a body in one tab rather than spread over two, even if that means a bit of scrolling is needed. I get the intention was to declutter the screen and get rid of elements not in use but I think it has gone a bit too far the other way now. I can adapt to most of it but having to check two tabs for each planet to get the full info is frustrating.

The ability to directly plot a route to a station/platform/base etc. from your bookmarks on the Galaxy Map is no longer possible as it was in Horizons.
We really need this option back.

Also when listing things like POI's etc. Please can we have them in some sort of order. Alphabetical would be nice.

Overall I like the design of the new GalMap/SysMap, here are some things I don't:
  • Although you can still see the friend marker on systems where a friend is located, there is no way to see which of your friends is there. This should be added to the "System Information" menu
  • There is no quick way to remove a bookmark, the "Add bookmark" button should be replaced with a "Remove bookmark" button when you've already bookmarked a thing.
  • Slight inconsistency, on the left side, if you have no missions the button for that is greyed out, however on the right side, you can click on it, to display the "list", which just says "no active missions"
  • Not necessarily an UI issue, but there is a new option to hide the controls help widget, but it resets to being on all the time
Edit, forgot to add:
  • The System Map's selection circle thing. I preferred the larger circle we had in the alpha. I think it looks a lot better than the small thingie we have now.

System Map: slow to load. Slow to get back out to the game. Bookmarking currently broken for me - displays add bookmark icon in white and says the station is already bookmarked when it is not.

Bring back context menu for basic operations and display of the selected body.

Galaxy Map: Controller navigation poor. Previously shoulder buttons could move between tabs which was relatively efficient, but with just a hierarchical menu, and no tabs that level of quick access is gone.

Bookmarks are broken. I'm seeing Squadron marks under stations! It was working ok on release, but not now. Under "management" all is displayed correctly. A context key to set "route too" or "delete" would be invaluable rather than to navigate through to the sub menu. Also "B" does not work to back you out of the sub-menu, rather you have to click "back". This is an inconsistency. Previously you could route direct to a station. This no longer works from the main bookmark list - only by going through the "management" section can you do this. This adds a tonne of unnecessary clicks. A context press or menu for "route" would solve this rather than having to go to the right panel.

Seeing lots of white flashes in the GUI. I'm getting flickering on trying to mouse hover on items and have to go out of the galaxy map and back in to get some consistency. I'm using both an xbox controller and mouse/keyboard for the menus so maybe it can't swap between them well??

Search needs improving. If you copy/paste in the entire system name and press "return" it still brings up the context menu of the name which you have to click on. Search bar should check if the name is valid and accept it without this extra press. Feature request: add "previous searches" in a list if you just select the search bar. Add "recent stations" to the commerce search section too.

I really like the new Galmap - I find it intuative and easy to use.

The only thing I would change would be (1) to show the [System Map] button all the time (greyed out when not available), and (2) When exiting from the System map back to the Galaxy Map, move focus back to the system just viewed instead of back to the current location.

Thanks

Galmap: the bookmark navigation needs to go back to being a context popout as before. Egv my carrier takes two clicks in Horizons, but four plus movement in Odyssey. Otherwise keep the type list, that's pretty good. Navigation is no longer intuitive, and route plotting settings don't persist between sessions. Sysmap: unfortunately not an improvement, very garish with crude icons.
Station UI: too many clicks. Why are passenger missions a subchoice of the mission board? Mission completion is the same, again too many clicks. Shipyard: looks good, but sell and store buttons are far too close. Outfitting: looks good until you try and find out what your modifications are. Again, the sell/store option is dangerous, with the silly little toggle needing a mouseover.
Miscellaneous: two clicks to use a lift? Why? Boarding a ship is the same. Walk over, hit "e", you're in.

Please for the love of all that's holy stop reposting the same massive reddit post over and over, amateur reddit sleuthing isn't helping, Frontier aren't so incompetent they don't know what the issues are and if they're following a certain approach it's for a reason.

UI Feedback: Galaxy map

Overall thoughts
Over all I dislike it.

Specific Issues
1) Usability of the galaxy map for KB/Mouse is much slower than the previously way was. It's geared toward controllers it shows & works well for that. It also takes up more screen space than the previous one did when you start expanding stuff.

2) My opinion also is that it looks less "technical" more like it belongs on a 5/yo's Ipad for a flash game than in a space game. It's beautiful, full of thought, and minimalism style choices. It doesn't however give you all the info about what you can do on with the current filters the screen your on as the old one did. This causes me to be slower with it. It's also harder to describe to others.

3) holding to route is slow, the older way is more common on PC, hold is a console thing it's often referred to as a bad console port when it appears in games if you brows the steam forums or other gaming sites. FIX: Options to toggle, ideally a settings menu for all of the galaxy map options (gear icon or whatever) that let you change all the bindings for the map & it's behavior. This lets those that want hold have it and those that want to quickly move around & route do so. Double tap would be a good option too.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues

The new UI has removed the following Map features from the game:

System Map

  • Owner information on Fleet Carriers (Name and Squadron)
  • Faction BGS States other than primary
  • "First discovered" tags for stars, black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs
    https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/31420
  • Precise population numbers of high population systems (this might be a design choice)
  • Pressing "esc" now always opens the menu, instead of just closing the map

Galaxy Map

  • Names of friends in system (friend locations don’t tell what friends are there)
    https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34438
  • Button to remove bookmark at hand
  • Filter for Fleet Carrier presence
  • System State Information displays incorrect states (incursions in this example)
    https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32862
  • System description not loading at first selection
    https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34234
  • Powerplay Issues
    • 15LY Control System Range indicator sphere; exploited systems would depict all overlapping spheres (grey/blue spheres)
    • View information on systems available for preparation/expansion
      • distance to power HQ
      • expansion cost
      • radius income
      • upkeep cost
      • potential loss/profit
      • amount of contested systems
  • System selection for "exact match" or "only match" (was pressing enter, currently the "play" button)
  • System selection and cycle when multiple matches (was pressing enter, currently the "play" button)
    https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33446
  • Prices of Exploration Data (when buying it at stations)
  • Engineers markers have the same color as bookmarks and don't stand out as when they were purple
  • Stored ships marker has the same color as Community Goals
  • The government filter option "Imperial" is not a type that exists in the game
  • Bookmarked Carriers appear as Systems (including Squadron bookmarks)
  • Pressing "esc" now always opens the menu, instead of just closing the map
  • "Open System Map" in an awkward spot (please move it to the top!)

There is also these following problems:

System Map

  • No Landing Pad Size of Ports and Settlements
  • POI list issues (Ports, Landfall Planets, Ground Ports, Horizon Settlements, Odyssey Settlements)
    • Too many entries without means of filtering (there can be +50 settlements)
    • No filters for economy type (especially Odyssey, economy matters)
    • No filters for controlling faction
    • No way to plot course through the POI list
    • No way to identify Anarchy controlled POIs

Aside from these there are also some long-standing Horizon issues:

Galaxy Map

  • No Locations of other squadron members (need to add all to friends as workaround)
  • No Secondary system controller states
  • No non-controller faction states
  • Thargoids and Pilot's Federation are allegiances, but show up as "none" and can not be filtered
  • No way of combing filters

System Map

  • No Landing Pad Size of Ports
  • No Orbit Installations and Megaship locations (if fleet carriers work, why not these?)
  • Bookmarked carriers (squadron) wrongly highlight the entire planetary system and all other carriers there as bookmarked
  • No way to advertise fleet carrier services, example: owner's message ("Buying Commodity at X Price, 10k profit for you", etc)

Simple solution for most is to add the info tool back in. Some would require new UI buttons or elements.
This is an excerpt from the "missing information summary thread"

While this post focuses on missing information, #224 shows well how the layout could be improved.

Two things regarding galaxy map:

  • on GALAXY map, give me a faster way to open SYSTEM map of a SPECIFIC system, than to target it, go to the right side panel and then click it.
let me middle click it or something
  • If, on GALAXY map, I see a mission target, a settlement, a bookmark or whatever, let me plot a route to THAT EXACT THING, not only to the system it's in.

PS
Don't ask for dxdiags and config settings, just read that damn reddit post and fix the culling, the source of the fps problems.

UI Feedback

Overall thoughts
– please keep this brief (one or two sentences)
I'm currently playing with KB+M only, no HOTAS, Controller, or other input device, and in the old interface, it was easy to move around and interact with the sysmap and galmap with keyboard alone if you wanted to. The new UI forces you to use mouse and mouse clicking and even though I do have the mouse there, it's not intuitive to have keyboard functionality but it not covering 100% of the features.

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)
Going from left and right tool bars in galmap, is not intuitive. Is there a key? Haven't figure that one out yet.

Hard to know what filter/map mode/view is currently active. Had some colored diamond shaped icons over systems yesterday and had to click around to realize I had some market/commodity flag on.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Put left and right tool bars in galmap on keys 1 and 2 or optional key binds.

Show some short blurb about what mode/view somewhere on screen.

Thank You
No. Thank you! :)

Odyssey has a lot of potential and it's fun. Just FYI.

I like the style and the way the new UI look. But the functionality and ease of use have been affected in a negative way.

Specific Issues
The UI feels like it has been designed for controller support way too much. Keyboard and mouse input feel clunky at best.
For example:
-The hold to target system may feel nice using a controller, but is less intuitive on a mouse. The old popup style windows were nicer for keyboard and mouse.
-Many places now have many layers of sub menus when it could have been easier to reach with the old system.
-Lacking consistancy, Stuff like map mode bein applied but not showing in the UI of which is selected when entering the map. Having to click out of windows instead of being able to use the UI back button hotkey. Small inconstencies like this make the UI feel clunky.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
Keep the new style of this UI, but rework the layouts. Keep keyboard and mouse design in mind while making it. Have it detect what you are using and perhaps switch out holding to select or popup menus.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.
I find this a little odd to be completely honest. Wasn't the purpose of the paid alpha to give you guys feedback, and to my recollection, you did get TONS of feedback regarding the galmap and the UI.

This truly reinforces the notion that Odyssey never actually left the alpha development phase!
