Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

@Bruce G

This seems to be avoiding the elephant in the room somewhat. Isn't it the engine that's the problem, ie it's nothing to do with the specs of people's machines?

Information here :
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/nj1f5x/odyssey_renderer_is_broken_details/

Having people submit various tickets seems to be a bit of a run around. ED just seems completely unoptimised, no amount of looking at logs and specs and driver versions is going to help fix that.
Yeah, that's all "level I tech" stuff and smacks of stalling with a little bit of patronizing. We're way beyond that. I'd also like to know what guy is "enjoying the game at the intended standard". Taken at face value, that quote doesn't bode well.

Regarding UI:

Overall thoughts
  • The idea and the layout is great. However it misses some core functionality.

Specific Issues:
  • System-map access from the galaxy-map is to inconvenient and honestly strange
  • Custom folders for bookmarks

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Route plotting, system map and purchasable data buttons directly at the selected star, not at the border of the window (like horizons has it at the moment)
  • Let us make custom folders for bookmarks with custom names for them, maybe also changeable colors to identify them from another on the map

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Once you’ve opened a report, please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Well atleast you're doing something. Although this should have been done before the launch any ways o7

Overall thoughts – I returned to Elite after break and I like new UI for galaxy and system map. I'm not "power user" when comes to Elite, just doing mission, pew-pew, sightseeing etc. and for my needs it is good

Specific Issues
  • atmospheric circle should be centred with planet image. It would look more professional
  • it seems that sometimes when you click planet or system point to plan route click point is moved of center

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
- none

Outfitting/Shipyard needs a hard look. Its sorta a shame that you can't see module loadouts of ships you're not actually in, which makes figuring out what ship has what a major nightmare, on top of the nightmare is swapping modules (and making sure to not accidentally sell your hard won engineered modules). Right now it's faster to log into Horizons, set up a ship, and log back in.

Fdev please make a multi-crew member that doesnt own the ship be able to disembark and make team missions for edo.

UI/UX is inconsistient. Escape works in some places, not others, sometimes boots you to menu. Text is clipped in missions.
Map UX and outfitting UX has less information, has far too many clicks to perform simple tasks or find information. The hold to interact moves the mouse causing the cursor to move around or select the wrong thing.

EDIT: One important thing, in outfitting, please put the numbers back on the module size, the dots, whilst I'm sure are nice are less readable at a glance.

Overall thoughts (Galaxy & Systems maps)
Long-hold to set object as target is cumbersome and error prone.
Clashes with E:D's move towards (or dabbling with) keyboard-focused user interfaces (see outfitting).
Hides information that I deem essential.
Note: I should work on my Combat Elite status, but I will always be drawn to exploration.

Specific Issues
System map:
  • Long-click to target an object (planet, moon, sun etc.) is cumbersome and error prone.
  • Space bar to select object is dearly missed
  • Information on a) was object already discovered (suns, etc.) and b) were they mapped (planets, etc.) is no longer available, or only at dispropotionate cost (time spent)
Galaxy map:
  • Start the game, set a target (again, long-click?) and off you go, you have your route planned. Yay
  • Do a few jumps, exit game, return to game, next system has changed (it seems to be a constant 64ly in my case) -- ignoring loadout, inventory and all of that
  • So, off you go to find the target system of that route you set.
  • Best case, long-click on target system, long-click again, and you're back to where you were at when you exited the game :)applause:)
  • Make a mistake, and your amazing plans to get from A to B evaporate.
  • I am not restarting Horizons again to compare, but wasn't there "discovered by..." data in the Galaxy map, back in the days?

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
  • Enable use of space bar instead of long-click
  • Establish a secure way to move Galaxy map's end-of-route
  • Better yet, fix the jump range issue
Free add-on: Make space bright again.

Keep up the good work, and good luck. o7

Galaxy map icons
Overall thoughts - I like the idea of removing the pop up black box, that always got in the way, the new icons look great, I think it’s quite hard to learn your way around the icons, especially if they disappear sometimes.

Specific Issue - system map icon disappears in galaxy map when you don’t have system map info. This made it hard to learn how to find the system map button in the first place

Suggested Fix for the Issue - perhaps grey out the button instead of removing it, this visually tells me where to look but that I don’t have the info available yet.

galaxy UI, bring back info box that showed when you hovered mouse over a system. Having to click on a system to even get basic details is a pain. Bring back being able to target a system and plot a route to that system in the galaxy UI instead of having to click on the system and do the target/plot in a popup window.

system UI, info box that showed when you hovered mouse over a body. Having to click on a body to even get basic details is a pain.

Honestly this really doesn't instil me with a great deal of confidence that you chaps actually know what the issue it.

Have you looked at the culling anaylis that has been undertaken by members of the community?

Isn't this work suppose to happen during Alpha or Beta the latest? Why did you release the game?

For the FPS issue could you give us some idea of the relative frame rates you expect us to see between 'normal in-space in your ship) frame rates and various on-foot scenarios, e.g. "on foot in a station concourse", "on foot at an Odyssey Settlement", "on foot at some random location on a body surface away from settlements".

What I'm getting at is that I, for example, see 100-144FPS in my ship out in space, but then around 50 FPS in a station concourse, and sometimes as low as 30FPS on foot at Settlements. Is this to be expected, or is the latter something I should be putting together an email report on ?

Overall thoughts
broadly speaking is improved; ship loadout/storage managemant is greatly worsened

Specific Issues
inability to loadout items from storage if you accessed "Loadout" section instead of "storage"

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
add possibility to add loadout from storage directly from loadout section

I wont repeat the great posts about missing functionality, but please take to heart that functionality is the important thing.

As for the long click thingy to set a target, it is ok with me, as I use mouse for navigating menus and maps.

What I do not like:
The information for planets is split in two parts.

Planets with no atmosphere has no atmosphere entry. This makes it much harder to read, as that is not the only entry that moves around a lot depending on what is on the planet.

Decide what information you want to present in each panel, and if there is too much for one panel, go ahead and split them.
But when I change planet, I should be able to quickly find any entry and compare planets.

Just do some basic UI testing.

Overall thoughts - The fresh look to the UI is good, however the functionality has been decreased and information is harder to access. This is particularly the case with the system map and bookmark menu.

Specific issues:
  • Unable to remove bookmarks from the galaxy map, you have to go into a different menu to do it signficiantly increasing the time spent to remove bookmarks compared to the old UI.
  • Removing bookmarks from the bookmark menu is also problematic if you have many bookmarks since they can be quite hard to find in the list. This increases the time spent to remove bookmarks further.
  • The FSD boost route plotting option no longer works.
  • System cycling has been removed from the galaxy map. Previously you could get the galaxy map to run through specific system mass codes (i.e. type ''Egnaix AA-A h'' and it cycles through all the aa-a h systems in that sector) but this functionality has been removed in the new galaxy map. This makes it a lot harder to locate these types of systems when exploring.
  • Information on the system map is hard to locate due it being spread across many menus whereas previously it was displayed concisely in a list.
  • First discovered tag on stars is not visible on the system map so we have no idea if a system with only a star in has been first discovered.
Sugested fixes:
  • Ideally an option to switch back to use the old UI. Letting people choose what they want the UI to look like would be nice and would allow people to use whatever is best for their playstyle.
  • Add the ability to remove bookmarks directly from the galaxy map. Just use the old system of clicking on the bookmark icon on the galaxy map to do this.
  • Allow us to order bookmarks in the bookmark menu better.
  • Re-enable the FSD boost option and system cycling
  • Display information on the system map in clear and concise lists. For example, targetting a planet should display all the information about that planet in one list and not spread the information across many menus.
  • Add features to make finding specific system types easier instead of making existing features harder to use. For example, add a star class filter for supergiant stars.
  • Add first discovered tags to the stars on the system map.
