Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

The galaxy map UI is bugged for me. The system state filter is reporting every system in the galaxy in the same state. Sometimes every system is in boom, relog and every system is at war.

Hi, thatnks for everything,
1: could you activate menu wrap around top and bottom please, the main thing the system and galmap were was QUICK to use whilst flying, currently to get to Interesting places tab down the bottom ,it's many clicks of the tophat(it doesn't hold and move down either)
1b: Solution, activate menu wrap around, so we can go over the top

2:we can not plot from interesting places, for taxi's also
2b: Solution allow plotting and booking actually from within intersteing places
3: we have no mouse over/hover over system which also opens system info tab or similar, it should open at least one of the info tabs on mouse over or at first click, currenyly it opens a system info panel on '1 click on system, then one click on info.
3b Solution revert or incorporate previous system.

P.s menu wrap around on talking to npc texts also please, thanks

GALAXY MAP

I feel the left side of the Galaxy map UX should be changed to this order:

Realistic Mode
Map Mode
User Data
View Route Settings
Compare by Size
Bookmarks
Missions
Fleet
Powerplay
Trade Tools
Display Options
in result less clicks to find stuff with scroll

Right side should be set up to

Target System
System info
Copy system name
Plot Route
Add to Bookmarks
Market Information
Stored Ships
System missions
Buy Trending Trade data
Powerplay
Focus system

Another thing I would love to see... We have click to select the system, hold to plot route. A double click would be amazing to target the system you have selected.

Other issues is the search bar. Typing an exact name and hitting Enter you expect to go there, but you have to scroll down to the system name, and then click it to move there, and then you have to UI back to get out of that to get back to star selection.

Get rid of the separators ability to stop the cursor between the buttons on the side menus. if you are on the left side, and hold down, the cursor stops at each and every little line separator, so you cant get though it fast

The click and drag to turn on/off filters is nice, but if you go too fast, it turns everything off.

On the States Filter, if you change the top 4, it turns off the bottom 4, cause it has to scroll down, and vice-versa.

When it comes to the filters, it has a lot of blank space between each one, like everything is double spaced, can a lot of that be reduced so it does not take up so much space vertically?

Friends names no longer show up in system info, so I have a friend marker, but I dont know who is there

Can we have a "minimalist" for the ship view? each button is like

Ship type
Ship Name ---------------------- PICTURE OF SHIP
Ship ID

Can we get a version that is like

Ship Type - Name - ID - no picture

Just takes up a ton of space and tons of scrolling, also a search for ship would be nice

What does "advanced search options" do? There is no documentation for what this is, and turning it on and off I cannot see any change.

SYSTEM MAP

For the system map, a bug that has existed for VR users, can we get the cursor sped up? it is 1/5th the speed of non-VR so takes forever to move around larger systems, even when zoomed out. This video is old, but behavior is still current

I will just repeat Malic post because how good it is

Overall thoughts:

I feel that the UI is reasonable nice looking, but clunky (and slow) to use. I've noticed significant delays before the right side bar comes up for example.

Specific Issues:
  1. Button color is very bad for people with certain color blindness. I can barely see the buttons.
  2. Can't seem to route to a bookmark anymore. To route to a ground base from bookmark. Old method: Select bookmark and route to it. New system:
    1. Click bookmark (selects system).
    2. Click on "system map" button.
    3. Find correct body.
    4. Zoom into map.
    5. Find base on body and route to it.
  3. Information is fragmented, and you have to click all over to find it.
  4. Missing information from Horizons (I've seen many threads on this, and I'm sure there's plenty of issues logged).
  5. Tap-to-route is awkward and a significant downgrade from the old system when using a mouse at least.
  6. Much more movement around the screen to route/select system targeting - have to always move the cursor to the right, and find the right button.
  7. System Map: Scrolling lists with mouse wheel often also changes the zoom.
  8. It seems the "move map" often gets stuck so it moves the map around when I'm moving the mouse without pressing any buttons.
  9. Often seems laggy.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues:
  1. Red/Orange on black is not good. Preferably should be configurable, but at the very least shouldn't be orange. In general lighter color, but especially not red-based, would be great.
  2. Bring back "route to bookmark" ability directly from the bookmark.
  3. This isn't necessarily bad per se, as long as all information is available. However due to issue #1 it's worse for me.
  4. Bring the missing information back.
  5. The menu at the system was superior.
  6. Same as #5 - bring back the system context menu. Put the buttons you need to act on a system by the system not halfway across the screen.
  7. When scrolling a list, don't adjust zoom!
  8. More of a bug, but make it not do that.
  9. Make faster?

Overall thoughts – The new UIs for outfitting are inefficient and confusing.

Specific Issues – See above

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – Roll back ship outfitting to Horizons state. It did not require improvements.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
Overall thoughts: upgrade was more like a downgrade in accessibility. it takes more time to do all sorts of little things now.

As an explorer - some specific issues w/ galmap and system map:
  1. Charting a course is a pain now. The UI itself isn't too buggy - but the [Space][Hold] when you highlight over a system is confusing and I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally centered the minimap on my current system again when charting a new course. It makes me think I need to hold space to chart the course.
  2. Additionally - charting a course itself is broken now. The jump range is taken from your unencumbered range and your preferences reset every time you log in. So when you chart a course, you have to go back in and select "fastest route" & "FSD boost" (or whatever the neutron boost option is called) and recalculate your route for it to pull the correct (current encumbered) jump range
  3. A positive - the actual algorithm you guys use now for charting a route is 1000x faster, A+ bang up job on that. Search function right at the top and being able to copy and paste system names are fantastic little features.
  4. (unrelated to asked question but it's still burning) - It's unclear how to actually get raw mats now? Like I haven't seen a single geographic feature since I booted back up to start exploring again.
  5. I have to manually go into every planet to find the planetary info
  6. The labels not being visible is annoying. I take long breaks from the game and sometimes I don't remember what everything does when I come back.
  7. This isn't really a bug but a potential feature but maybe show which planets are terraformable somehow in the system map.
Some possible solutions:
  1. Label the stuff more clearly. For example:
Press [Space] to recenter on your current location
Press and hold [Mouse1] to chart a course
  2. Just remember my last course settings? It's probably a minor bug that someone forgot to add this but it should be pretty simple to save routing preferences in a preferences.xml or something.
  3. No fix needed, thanks for the upgrade!
  4. Maybe bring geographic and biological hotspots (or even raw materials hotspots)? Like use some algorithm to find places on the planet where you'd be more likely to find a cluster or something. Not having raw mats when you're exploring makes using SRVs a hassle. If this is already a thing, please include how to find raw mats now in the commander's guidebook or something.
  5. Have some toggle option to display planet info on hover or on selection (or just do it automatically), rather than selecting, then clicking through 2 menus to get to the info.
  6. I have the same complaint about both the system map and the galmap. Just make the labels always visible or add an option to do it. I don't want to have to hover over each of them to figure out what does what.
  7. A green border instead of the normal blue one would be cool, or maybe some little marker that shows if they're terraformable (and another that shows if they're already mapped) in the system bodies list. Right now my solution is to keep EDDiscovery open on my other monitor.

THE ON FOOT VS SRV VS SHIP UI INTERFACES AND INPUTS SHOULD BE CONSISTENT

ON FOOT MAKE TOOLS => GUNS - DON'T OVERCOMPLICATE THINGS BY FORCING US TO BIND THEM SEPARATELY - ITS CONFUSING

Galaxy Map & System Map
Overall thoughts: Less convenient than Horizon's maps because of lack of important features and more clicks required
Specific Issues:
1. Selection markers are misplaced on the Galaxy map (it's hard to target a system)
2. When holding LMB on an object the map starting to move to focus on this object and thus the cursor can move to another object and LMB hold will be triggered for that new object
3. Galaxy Map Bookmarks: no way to set route to a Body/Settlement bookmark directly from the Galaxy Map as it was possible in Horizons
4. Lack of combined filters - when filtering on multiple aspects at once (e.g., Economy + State + Government)
5. Lack of player-defined tags and Search for the Bookmarks

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
1. Place markers right around the stars on the Galaxy Map
2. Don't pan the system map on LMB-down, only on a body selection (when clicked)
3. Allow to set the route to the end body/location right from the Bookmarks list - maybe by holding LMB on the bookmark item
4. Allow to choose multiple filters at the same time
5. Allow to add tags for bookmarks & search by bookmarks name and/or tag via the common search field

I believe frontier owns this bunch of enthusiastic, loving CMDRs who not only did not sue frontier for faulty release but giving FDev tons of advice and feedback when the whole thing is obviously a beta test a big fat thank you.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

People machines are not the problem. I know it, you know it, almost everyone knows it at this point.

When a Ryzen 5800x - RTX 3080 pc can run Horizon at rocksolid 90fps in VR Ultra and over 144fps in desktop mode but struggle to mantain 45fps in VR and 60 in Odyssey the issue is not my machine and not what software i run in the background.

The issue is the fact that you sold me a 40$ dlc that lacks any form of optimizations and should have been delayed for atleast another 6 months (ATLEAST).

I cant refund anymore because i tried for 2 days to make it work in VR so Steam refused my claim (rightfully) but thats on me.

And i understand your position, you have to take time while the coders struggle against time to make it borderline playable asap.

Lets say that this is a start, lets see if you guys manage to flip this, but please stop making it sound like the issue is on the users side. Is not cool

Quick thoughts off the top of my head

  • I would like first discovered, first mapped, and first footfall in the same place. I like exploring, this is all useful info to me, and right now first footfall is in a separate section (icon on left menu)
  • I would like atmosphere type and density in the same place, right now (if I remember) they are in two separate places
  • If I plot a route, jump, stop to point at some planets to go visit, then I don't get the "next system in jump" icon in my Nav panel next to the system. Even going into the Galaxy map and out again doesn't restore it. I have to jump to random system, open Galaxy map so it replots, and then I can resume my journey (or I could memorize the name of the system from the Galaxy map, and scroll through the nav panel til I spot it.... I know which is easier ;) )
  • Spotting which things are terraformable and earthlike feels a little harder now in the system map. Again, I like exploring, so that's important to me :)
  • I find it odd and inconvenient that some planet info is available on the System map on the right from a distance, but other info is only available if you zoom in to a landable/atmospheric planet and then use an icon on the left (which also has two pages to it). Having that all accessible without zooming in, from one icon (even with multiple pages) would be something I'd prefer. See above points for the kind of info I would like to see in one place.

- The brightness/darkness issues. While an overall issue with the game, I will mention them here as they also affect scanning (that's close enough to the System and Galaxy maps, right? ;) ), with planets looking pretty darn terrible in those, most turning into burning white balls of nothing. Even earthlikes and water worlds which should be beautiful gems in the night are now washed out kids drawings :(

- Also, hasn't the volumetric shadows cast by the ships and mountains through the thin atmospheres disappeared? I really liked that in the Alpha (I am one of those folks who lives for taking cool screenshots ha)

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Visually pleasant but doesn't present information or access functions in an efficient way.

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

  • Bookmark function access is gated through multiple clicks.
  • Fleet view is hard to use for large fleets.
  • Information panels do not pop up automatically, require long mouse movement and extra clicks, will mostly be ignored.
  • Click once to focus a destination then wait for the focus to happen before having to hold to click a target is very lengthy process, feels like it's designed for a touch screen. I'm not using a touch screen.
  • Large sweeping mouse movements to switch between functions on the far left, functions on the far right, and map object interaction make galaxy map use laborious. Gating access behind multiple layers of tabs that hide and reveal on click makes button navigation lengthy and confusing.
  • [Edit] Clicking on an object and having the map move underneath my cursor, when I need to then click the same object immediately after to set a route, is really frustrating gameplay and adds wait when I should be able to action immediately.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

  • When selecting bookmarks there should be an immediate button to click to plot a route, this fundamental function of bookmarks shouldn't be gated behind multiple additional presses to go through managing bookmarks. This confusing set up is why a lot of people end up thinking you have to go to the system map to plot to a bookmark.
  • Fleet list would benefit from filters and/or the ability to order ships.
  • If I click on/hover over an object in the map (system, planet, station) it should come up with a tool selection similar to in Horizons with options to plot route, see system map, expand information, focus. I should be able to use these basic functions with minimal effort, clustered at the focal point of where I'm interacting, not with lengthy roving movements from different sides of the screen.
  • I should have the option to toggle default on/off for the information panel on the left hand side to automatically show when I click to focus on an object. Clicking on a central point then having to travel to an extreme right point to see core information means I will basically ignore and never use that.
  • Ability to select a target destination, outside of single un-altered jump range, as a nav point without needing to "plot" a route is core for being able to use some trickier long range jumps (neutron boosting and FSD boosts) in sparse regions where the galaxy map plotter has trouble figuring out pathing. Please return this functionality.
  • [Edit] Don't make it so that first click on an object automatically moves map focus - perhaps make this feature into a double click, so that tool selections on one click is the priority.

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
I liked the old system map more because I could see all important Information without clicking through too many symbols. The new Galaxymap is an improvement. I like that I can plan a rout with just holding down the left mousebutton. I hope it get fixed soon that the algorithm allow us to find neutronstar routs again.

Overall thoughts – Odyssey galaxy map and system map is good. I really use those 2 UI a lot to play odyssey

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

1. cannot select multi system route. Only from A to B and not A to B then to C
2. please save setting as defined when exiting the galaxy map (population size filter for example, net to reset every time)
3. don't have access to favorite outside of galaxy map interface
4. hard to see when finding some specific system after applying filters
5. cannot easily search for commodity
6. cannot search for planet (for example with ring, certain type of ring) in the bubble

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
1. give access to galaxy map favorite in ship left panel interface
2. ease commodity research
3. add planet research in the bubble
4. create multi stage route creation
5. improve visibility when filtering
6. review trading interface in galaxy map icons and wording as it is not clear

Overall thoughts – Some of the new UI are nice QOL improvements, sadly a lot of the new UI is terrible especially the Galaxy Map.

Specific Issues
  • When a route is plotted and you quit the game, or just quit to the menu, when you start the game again and visit the Galaxy Map it now no longer replots the route for you.
  • Having a bookmark that points to s station when plotted in the Galaxy Map just takes you to the system, the station is not selected upon entry to the system

I agree that the galaxy map, with its few issues, is far from the most important problem at the moment, and we haven't even opened Pandoras Box (VR issues) yet.

Also, quit thinking that this can be calmed down using giveaways on Twitch, paying some Youtuber I never heard about to play (and crash countless times) or giving presents to the CCs that don't speak the obvious truth. Yamiks was right, and you messed up (again). Maybe you should fix that "little issue" first, if you're concerned about PR.

UI Overall Thoughts: I like the general look & feel if the new UI, however it's clear that not enough thought has gone into the flow the players follow when doing things, and that some features have made it through to release bugged and/or incomplete.

Specific Issues:

Information that was previously available in GalMap at-a-glance is now buried several clicks deep. e.g.: select a target star system on the old galmap, it clearly told me how far away from my current system the target was. Where is that information now?

If I want to check status of a system's factions, I'm having to click on icons on both sides of the screen (select system, system map icon on far right, faction icon on far left) - too much mouse / hand travel. Review the flow of the task, place icons needed to do one thing closer together.

Faction info has background art to show Superpower alignment that looks nice but makes the text above it almost unreadable.

In the System Map, the atmosphere effect around a planet is ever so slightly off-centre. Once noticed, this is a visual hangnail that annoys me everytime I look at the map. Centre the effect. Similarly, if I click on a planet that's not at the centre of the screen, the selection icon appears well off-centre of the planet I clicked, and only lines up ones the target body is centred on the screen. The selection icon should always be over the body I've selected.

Powerplay commodity loading was a ballache before Odyssey, you've made it worse. Please, revisit how this is done as its actively off-putting to getting involved in Powerplay. Unless that was the point.

Transaction panel is bugged, it refreshes at random; each refresh removes focus from whatever I had selected & returns to the top-left of the panel. When I select something, it should stay selected until I decide to move the selection elsewhere.

Back button on my controller works inconsistently - some parts of the UI recognise it, others (e.g. exiting from the screen that lets you selection CG / Mission / Passenger Mission types) don't. Consistency, please.

Cargo depot: If I have a stack of missions and cargo to fulfil all these, I can only drop cargo for one; panel then exits right out to the mission board and I have to go back in again. It should stay in the depot until I'm done and back out myself, otherwise it's just creating extra busywork for me. (By comparison, the mission hand-in screen does this correctly. Again, consistency, please).

Default focus on entering screens is sometimes baffling, as are available cursor movements when using a controller for navigation. When I go into the mission selection section, default is Exit - should really be the controlling faction icon at top? If I want to go straight to the Depot, I can't - doesn't recognise going right, I have to go up then right (to hand-in) and down. Extra steps for no good reason. Revisit how controller inputs on menus are interpreted, try to make my life easier and not harder. Please.

Option to turn off animations in Outfitting, please. They waste far too much time, and once they've been seen once there's no need to see them again.

When swapping modules, in the name of all that is holy the default action for the module being swapped out should be store.

Plot a route in the Galmap, if the destination is obscured and you have to go to Supercruise first, game forgets the route and it has to be replotted before you do a hyperspace jump. Assume it's a bug, please fix.

In Closing: I know that's a long list, and I can probably think of more given time and some more playing with it. But UI experience is a key part of any computer program, be it a game or anything else, and bad choices at best make simple tasks take longer than they should, and at worst are actively off-putting. I'm glad to see you're taking this seriously.

Shipyard needs improvements too.

Add information about the modules used in the ship as well as in the Horizons.

This information is not in the Odyssey. Why did you cancel the display of this information?
We need to have the information in one place and see how and what our ships are equipped with.

Thanks.
