Odyssey - Plant life confirmed

I very much doubt they will be procedurally generated. They mention "convergent" life. Which to me says "convergent evolution", which is where different genetic lineages evolve similar traits to cope with similar challenges. Which sounds like a lore justification for very similar plants being everywhere.

There might be some procedural colour and texture variation, that kinda thing, and it certainly seems like each planet's flora might be genetically unique (in terms of the exploration data, unlike the space life), but I would not get my hopes up for a wealth of phenotypically varied lifeforms.

That'll be a major disappointment for me then... What's explory about seeing the same type of plant over and over?

Surely a procedural engine for plants, with inputs from Stellar Forge, and the geology and surface details (eg: at X altitude and near type Y vents) would be far more rewarding?

The Codex entries surely just need to summarise the plant form across X categories?

Firstly, totally agree that procgen plantlife would be more rewarding, but it's also a lot more complex for FDev.

Given that FDev only differentiated a bunch of the existing biologicals and NSPs by color, I can't see them bothering to procgen this time around either.

Not just plant life, it seems ....

Presumably, animal analogues would be things like star fish and sponges (I'm guessing here) rather than animals able to crawl, slither, walk .... or maybe they can !

"We want players to go out into the black, get that moment where they are the first to set foot on that new planet, and be able to report that back in."

"First Foot Fall" tags confirmed. 🙄

Also, note very clearly that all "walking" is immediately followed by "on planets." I hope the "I just wanna walk 'round in me ship" crowd is paying attention so as to avoid all the rage quit threads when Odyssey drops and they are surprised that they can't, in fact, walk around their ships.

There's a lot of opportunity for procedural generation shenanigans in phylogeny, but yeah it's going to be complex if FD wants to keep things pseudo-realistic. Fingers crossed! They did show a nice sketch of a succulent of some sort. I would be much more excited about algae and encrustations. Why the ruckus about advanced life forms when single-cellular life is likely much more widespread and abundant, and a lot more exciting?

Show me your crusts, FD!

:D S

After years of seeing hundreds of variations of hopping pineapples in NMS, I'm not too thrilled with the thought of "procedually generated life" anymore.

Edit: Elite has some 400 billion star systems with trillions of planets. You guys don't really expect each and every planet with tenuous atmosphere to have a unique and hand crafted plant life, do you? (general "you", not "you" as in directed at CMDR Yates ;) )

TBH! If it's just a bunch of hand crafted plants with colour variations, I suspect that won't interest me very much :(

Exploration is all about the chance of finding something different and ideally fairly unique. Hang crafted plants don't tick that for me :( A clever procedural engine generating plants based on a good number of inputs I suspect would tick that!

Plants should be fairly rare, should generally follow certain similar themes, but there should be the chance of real curve ball/extreme/odd examples very rarely!

If the plants were procedural they'd have shouted it from the rooftops just like they did with the surfaces. The guy talking about the plants was a designer, IIRC, discussing the ethos behind his design of the plants.

So I'd say it's close to 99% certain these are not procedural. It's not ideal, but you'd probably be better getting that plant-life bee out of your bonnet now before disappointment hits 😉
