Odyssey VR performance is very poor

I tried Odyssey in VR for as long as I could stand it this morning, but the performance is beyond terrible. Worst performance of almost any VR app I've used.

In Horizons CPU and GPU frametime is 3 to 12 ms.

Odyssey this morning with all graphics settings as low as they can go:
15 to 35 ms
Which is full time reprojection, and even dropping BELOW 45fps. Frametime is suffering badly on both GPU and CPU, so there's no fixing this, and I don't see a hardware upgrade giving me a 300% performance boost in order to play like Horizons did. I'd suggest to FDEV to not even enable VR for Odyssey until they can improve the performance. I mostly play Elite in VR (90% of play), so Odyssey is a no go for me until this is addressed.

System:
i7-6700k 4.5Ghz
RTX 2080 Oc'd
16Gb RAM
SSD

Is that in ship/SRV or on foot (or both)?

It's not going to be great at the moment, not with every player either downloading or trying to play the game, that is bound to affect performance.

That said, dropping SS a bit and the shadows down to low at 1080p improved performance quite a bit on my laptop.

Are you talking about Pancake mode or VR, because if you're talking about a laptop It's hard to believe you're doing much with Elite in VR.

I had all settings turned completely down or off- CPU and GPU frametime was still consistently higher than 11ms when it should be the opposite. Network latency wouldn't cause that much of a global slowdown.

And as Old Duck said, we saw how awful this was in Alpha. I was just hoping it was a diagnostic build running extra logging processes, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It's just not optimized in the slightest.

I can confirm what the OP said, for me running a RTX3070 it's unplayable and broken, the framerate dropped to 22 fps in stations while docking, in horizons I had 90 FPS. Going back to Horizons for the time till they fixed it? As a PvP Cmdr senseless, for Horizons players can't instance with EDO Cmdrs and I guess most Cmdrs will switch to EDO. Result is a split community, like in two different games -- until they enable crossplay later this year...

Runs completely fine for me on a 1080 potato in VR, I don't notice any difference in framerate. I'm still on the original Vive.

Lighting is better, planets look better.

I'm also on the original Vive, but my VR performance is absolutely awful.

What are your specs/settings, and what kind of FPS do you usually get (horizons)?

At least we know why VR isn't supported for planetside stuff - there's no way it would be even close to playable. I'm almost convinced that's the REAL reason it's not in VR, and not because they couldn't do it - they just know it'll cause much vomiting. Even ASW wouldn't help with such low framerates.
