Engineers Oh, come *on*...

So, I got invitations for mostly-useless Engineers - I fly a Vulture, so the only ones I need (to start with) are the ones with mods for power plants and distributors (mods to anything else will likely increase the power consumption, which I have no spare capacity for).

So, off to Khun I go (for Elvira Martuuk), so I can at least get a decent FSD and possibly a boost for my shields. 18 jumps later I get there, and...she wants Soontill Relics.

Only one place to get them - 400Ly away. That's a 72-jump round-trip in my Vulture; nothing's guaranteed to make me switch off my machine quicker than that.

So...yeah. This wasn't mentioned in her invitation, so is there somewhere in-game that we can find this info? If it's the same for all the Engineers, I'm reasonably likely to simply not bother; it puts a crazy (and very much un-fun) barrier to entry on top of the materials grind (which I don't mind so much, because I can at least get those via my preferred gameplay - combat) if they all have similar demands.

Select the Engineer you want, and have a look at their requirements/demands. :)

Excellent, thank you.

Wish I'd actually bothered to look at that before wasting an hour or so getting to Khun.

My last point still stands, though. If all the Engineers have similarly crazy requirements to qualify with them, then...yuck, really. Always seems the way with this game...show you something you really want, but make it so nut-grindingly un-fun that you just can't face putting the effort in.

I'll have another look at the requirements tomorrow, I guess, and find out. Really don't have the enthusiasm for firing it all up again tonight.

Feel a bit deflated, really. I was really bloody excited about this release.

Hold up. There's no soontil relics in Ngurii. Don't waste your time flying there! Right now not sure if it's a glitch or intentional.

You can see what the engineer wants by looking under the engineers tab. Todd mcquin wants about 100k in bounty vouchers. That's probably easier to gat with a Vulture ;)

I can understand where Frontier are coming from, Engineers are meant to be a bonus; something you work towards and are rewarded handsomely for your efforts.
That said however I do agree with you, putting everything behind what is, in my mind at least, a grind-wall sort of kills the enthusiasm.
I wouldn't have minded if the requirements would be required for say, Grade 3 and up - at least then you'd get basic upgrades and a taste of what the Engineers can give you.

Yep, that's what I thought (re: the Relics) - to my mind, they stopped existing in the game a while back, so I have no idea what the score is there.

Sadly, Todd doesn't have anything I want; I'm all about the energy weapons, man ;)

Yes - making it a reasonable hunt-around-local-systems thing might be a bit of fun, but huge trips? Much less so.

You do realize that you don't need to take the 400ly trip in that Vulture?

Aye, that's true enough. Still, spending a boatload on a solidly-defended cargo ship was more than I fancied, and wandering around the galaxy for that long in a lightly-shielded, long-range ship seems rather dicey given what happened to me last time I got jumped by NPCs in the beta :D

I'll probably wait until the requirements for the various engineers have been discovered and posted on here by other people, to be honest. Some people enjoy the floating-around-trying-to-find-things aspect of gameplay, so...more power to them :)

It is a bit disheartening to find that the new feature is not immediately accessible, even at a low level. I'll also be waiting until it shakes out a bit before trying to see one of the Engineers. It seems pretty useless at this point. I don't have meta alloys and don't know where to get them, so I'll wait until that info become available. And for the other guy, he wants bounties, but...I don't want to do bounties so that's out too (cuz I'm waiting until I suss out the new AI and determine if I even can handle it -- my combat is pretty poor and I'm old lol). Nothing for me to do, Engineer wise, at this point.

Aye, same here. The one I really want to get to in the first instance is Hera Tani, but given that I already satisfy her known requirement to unlock (Imperial rank) I suspect her requirements to meet are going to be along the lines of "recommendation from another Engineer". Since I can't even get started with any Engineers right now, it's starting to look like this is going to basically be a galactic treasure hunt which would put thousands of light-years on the clock.

I really hope that's not the case - surely FD wouldn't have made the headline feature of this release so inaccessible?

I'm starting to think there must be something I'm missing.

He kinda does. Even if he bought a Hauler and found where the Relics are for sale, he has no way that I know of to transfer them out of the Hauler into the Vulture. You have to obtain the commodities in the ship you want to up grade. I see no other way, unless I missed it in the change log.

Edit: It seems I did miss it and it is possible to transfer cargo from one ship to the next. Nothing to see here apart from an idiot eating crow. Sorry and move along. (Blush)

How about:
-Fly there in whatever has a long range.
-Get a friend.
-Drop the relics for your friend.
-Switch ships.
-Your friend drops them again.
-Everyones happy

If your friend has a Combat ship too you can even bring him some as reward :p

Elite, IS THE ORIGINAL GRIND FEST game... I man, cmon, back in the 80s I can remember playing away for weeks on end, mainly to reach Elite. That was the main gist of the game.

Now in ED, I'm still not Elite in any of the three disciplines. I simply dont feel I need to grind to get those badges. In fact, they will tend to just happen over time, the longer I play eh?

I think Engineers needs to though of the same way. Do them when you want to.

Right now, think about it, you have ZERO resources they will demand to make their mods. And getting those resources RIGHT NOW, will be quite stressful.

So, its better to work on engineers slowly. And only visit them when you already have a larder full of the various items they may need.

And as for some requirements being bugged. Thats what post Beta patches are for.

Me being silly, after visiting Khun and seeing that she wanted Soontill relics, I made the almost 500ly journey to the Soontill system only to find that there are no stations there.

Perhaps the relics are discoverable on one of the explorable planets there and I didn't just make a pointless 500Ly trip? I landed on a couple, but couldn't find any points of interest (and had to google how to find them). Just like most features in Elite, POI are about a clear as mud.

Am I right in thinking that POI are just driving around a planet in an SRV, or flying in a ship hoping to find something interesting?
