One thing I don’t understand about FDEV.

Why is there not a dedicated team set to creating new cosmetics for players to buy?
This reads almost like you don't know they add new cosmetics every week. Kinda like what would happen if they had a team dedicated to making them. Makes me wonder if the rest of what you write is equally wrong 🤔

If cosmetics are the primary way FDEV makes money
Are they?
why are there not more options?
guess you found the answer to the first IF

Also, i got the impression they're quite proud the game is not pay2win and the cosmetics are there to enhance someone's esthetic experience in the game and not the other way around: as in you got the game only for the benefit of being able to buy cosmetics.

After all, the name of the game is Elite Dangerous not Elite: Pimp my Ship Ride.

As an xbox cmdr I spent many many arx on my cmdrs wardrobe but now I'm not sure if "when" oddessey comes to console I will be able to wear them outside my ship?

For FDev, it's 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. If they came up with more options, they'd be criticized harshly for everything they did and everything they didn't do. Don't get me wrong - there are some legitimate gripes with FDev going all the way back to the Kickstarter. But, still... the fan base can be pretty toxic.
Yes everything anyone does is potentially subject to criticism. The lesson from this is not “Don’t Do Things”.

There is some fair criticisms here. Admittedly, I didn’t plunge into any research. But to be fair from my point of view, the game has been out for some time, and the selection of customisation seems pretty sad. Especially on the Xbox. I’m not sure if it differs on pc. I don’t think I’m alone in that I would appreciate more and varied options.

The thing that bothers me is the design changes to the game that the cosmetics store imposes.

"It's only cosmetic - it doesn't affect the game" is blatently untrue.

Carriers were going to be squadron assets.

Then someone from marketing brings up the fact that would be real hard to sell carrier paint jobs with...

All completely untrue of course, but it makes a good story.

I will say up front that I love this game and this is in no way a criticism. I just legitimately don’t understand this. If cosmetics are the primary way FDEV makes money, why are there not more options? Why is there not a dedicated team set to creating new cosmetics for players to buy? Or why is there not a community creation system like in Elder Scrolls or Warframe where players can create cosmetics to sell? This would bring in more money meaning they could hire more developers and get more accomplished. It would also give players a sense of customisation and uniqueness in the game. With Odyssey, that unlocks a whole world of possibilities for cosmetic customisation. I think it would even bring in more players and keep players busy and engaged in the game.
I don't think the game has got so many players to create such business.

I would have thought carriers would have stygian, midnight black, gold and chrome paints by now if that was the case.
