Oooh - look what's arrived.....! Funz!!

I kid you not, mine had me crawling round the back of my chair like a blind man and trying to touch things that weren't there. It's an amazing experience, but for actual gaming the triple screen and Trackir setup is still better.

Having said that, and despite my views on Facebook, when this is properly released I'm getting one. I just so wish it were another company getting my money.

Well, if the Vive beats them to the punch, and has ED support, I'd probably end up getting one of those, anyway! Oculus have to launch with what they have fairly soon, unless they want their lunch to be eaten. I'm no fan of Facebook, but then it doesn't pay to be a blind brand advocate, either. The game's afoot- and whoever ships something better and supported first is going to win a lot of nerd credits from the likes of you and me.

See now you're confusing me - I have trackir and could cobble together 3 un-matched screens...

Forget the politics! If it works get it! It was £312 delivered to the UK. Cheaper than my graphics card (although you do need a good card to run it in ED). Personally I think that's a bargain!

Yes you could wait for the next best thing I suppose. You can be always waiting for the next best thing...

I know folks here prefer DK2's as they are pretty much the only game in VR today (unless you want to strap a cell phone to your face), but I'm waiting for this:

HTC - VALVe Vive (Link to article)

Nice part is if you are a valid developer you get one free. Would love to hear views from DK2 owners who can try these out.

Yeah, a lot of people did.. personally I just went "bah, screw it!" after their total failure to be bullish in front of the press at SXSW, where they were getting a load of airtime. I waited long enough already- and I started realising that I could have more fun with a slightly primitive DK2 in the meantime anyway. It's a bit half-baked, but if you're a patient tinkerer, it's loads of fun.

Yeah, I'm a definitive tinkerer, but I have slight concerns about being "blind" to everything in the room, controls, keyboard, mouse and... people.

I have a nice DIY head tracking set up along with my HOTAS/chair etc. I'm very happy with how it's all come together, and not just for Elite.

IL2 Cliffs of Dover is lush - the Titan X is the only card I've seen that can confidently do 4k over London without freaking out... Everything looks so good.

I apologise if peple think I'm gushing about it, but, well - I am. It's that good (imho/subjective opinion etc).

That's the other way I was looking at it - not prepared to splurge the amount that would be needed to do 4k justice on a big monitor - so a DK2 could compensate :D

The DK2 has a little space around the nose, you become surprisingly good at tipping your head back, shoving the Rift a bit, and peeking out. However, the Crescent Bay prototype apparently has less nose space, so you can't bank on this in future. It's pretty easy to push the Rift up onto your forehead if you need to, though. The lack of vision has caused me to actually tidy my desk, shockingly.

The main danger for me is avoiding the inevitable cup of tea- so I move my hands carefully and lightly. I also (horror of horrors) learned to drink tea with a straw. Navigation in ED is a bit clunky in the Rift, and you need to flip it up to make/read notes (since you can't have a Steam overlay), but generally it's great. The first time you get in a dogfight, and tip your head back to track your target, you will know that you made the right choice. The tracking makes the wonderful TrackIR look like banging rocks together- it's so fast and accurate, even with the relatively primitive single IR camera setup that the DK2 uses.

Oh, and you're on a forum for INTERNET SPAECSHIPZ, where people build freakin' cockpits. We don't get to judge you about gushing over having fun in the air with your crazy setup :)

Yeah, I took a gamble and went 4k with a 970 first - I wasn't impressed with the fps at 4k so I just downed the resolution to erm, 2560 or whatever the halfway between 4k and 1080p is... I was happy enough to wait until later this year/next year for a decent single card resolution, then the Titan X came out. I saw the specs on gpureview.com and extrapolated an expected 4k fps from the 970's specs. I'm glad to say my approximations were spot on!

e: Ancipital; I was about to rep you for the desk tidy comment, then I saw that you drink tea through a straw. I'm sorry but, I... Just... can't... eeeeuuuuuugh!

e ii; your final sentence swung it back to a rep ;)

With regards to the Vive, hardware being out there is one thing, but software entirely another. Maybe Valve will have Source support out come release, but developers have to compile their titles for it first and we're none the wiser as to how far the development of the softer side has gone. Oculus already have their stuff and runtimes out, which have been in the wild for a while now.

I'm glad I have a DK2 (£280 when I bought it last October) and happy to spend that again on release, as well as Valve's Vive development kit if they get enough support into titles. I love VR.

As for the OP, I say well done and welcome to the club- immersion in ED is the best IMO when you are in the Rift!

Slightly ironic thing is I have a Note 4 - if I could strap that to my face with a low latency input/goggles/frame etc resolution wise it would knock the rift into a cocked hat.

I'll wait for the consumer version thanks! In the meantime I think I'll look on, in envy...

That's what I'm waiting for too as it'll be higher resolution.

Still, envious of the OP's true 3D experience and being able to look around the cockpit :D

so a quick question , what are they like if you wear vision correcting glasses?

Enty

It's fine for me. I have astigmatism mostly, wrecked my eyes from years of using computers. The DK2 comes with two sets of lenses, the A lenses are "normal" more or less, and the B lenses are more suitable for shorter sight. I find that with the B lenses, and the Rift correctly seated in the sweet spot, it's pin sharp- slightly dissapointing really, as the resolution isn't great, and the screen door effect somewhat noticable.*

You can also run it with the A lenses, and your glasses inside the headset, if you wind eye eye relief all the way out- which moves the lenses away from your face. It's a bit fiddly, getting the arms of your glasses to fit with the straps, but it can be done. However, since I started using the B lenses, I simply don't need to bother with glasses in the Rift.

Oh, and the straps feel like they're trying to slice your ears off, you might have to run them over the top of your ears for comfort- but it still stays put perfectly well, if you do.

* Yeah, the resolution does suck, and the screen door effect is indeed irksome. However, once you see how BIG your cockpit is, and how HUGE that T-9 lurching into the letterbox at you is, you will forgive it almost everything. DK2 feels like a work in progress, but it's sure to make you grin, once you get it all working. Approach it as "the best option for now", and you'll have so much fun that a little bit of wee might come out.
