Oooh - look what's arrived.....! Funz!!

Hope you enjoy it and I hope even more you can sell it for a good price..... (which you will want to do very soon)

I am very much considering it, I don't have that kinda spare cash until nearer the end of April, though.

Gah, I really bloody want one too...I shouldn't have come into this thread :p

Now is the worst time for buying an Oculus, they lost the race and it will be quite some time until they caught up.

As a DK2 owner, I'd love to see it made obsolete by something far, far better becoming readily available. Either the consumer Rift or the Vive- if ED supports it, I'm there. I'm secretly hoping to invoke sod's law by owning the DK2, hoping that the "real" Rift will come out shockingly soon. If it does, great- and if it doesn't, then I am still having slightly too much fun.

There won't be a consumer version of the rift this year, there will be a release ready vive though.

I know, but I'm incredibly impatient and prone to impulsive buys :p
Yea, I feel you. I wish you good luck and lots of fun, nevertheless

I love how various people in this thread are definitively stating that there will or won't be a Rift CV this year- and all without citing sources. So many different wild predictions that at least one person will be able to say "SEE? I knew it!" :)

Got mine, tried it, never will go back to a monitor. How can you people even stand using flat monitors ? It's like driving an F1 formula car around a race track for a day and having to drive home in a Prius.

Very nice, what GFX hardware is required to power that thing ?

If you want a good experience, the quick answer is "the most beefy card you can lay your hands on", as you can make it look nicer and smoother the more power you can throw at it. A Geforce 970 or equivalent wouldn't be an unreasonable place to start, though lots of people get by OK with less.

It also requires some basic competence in configuring stuff to make it good right now- the barrier to entry is a bit higher than using an iPad. Some people don't mind, as they love fiddling and exploring- others don't have patience for it, and won't have a good time.

Happy for you OP, but I personally cannot justify spending any money on half a product that has a terrible resolution. I will be buying a VR headset when they go retail and I can judge the quality properly.

Hope you have fun with it.

Just don't do any reading with it.

I tried really hard to like the Oculus Rift DK2. The novelty factor kept my attention for maybe 20 mins. I continued with it in hopes I would get the hang of it. I eventually got to the point, where I could not force myself to play Elite with Rift anymore. So I sold it and went back to my old 4:3 19" LCD.
So the 350 USD rift got beaten by a garbage bin LCD in terms of usability. It also got beaten by a 40 USD Durvius Dive 5 by accessibility and user friendliness.
I made a good deal thou. I bought it for 300 Euros and sold it for 370.

I used it with a GTX 960. With days of tinkering, I could reduce the judder a lot and still have reasonable picture quality. Never as sharp as on a flat screen thou.

I've considered getting one, but, I currently run a lot of other stuff on additional monitors that I like to look at whilst playing ED... e.g. Slopey's BPC, the forums, spreadsheets etc etc...

My question is.. Is it going to be a complete pain keep switching to these other monitors whilst wearing the Rift?

It is not a pain, it is impossible :). You don't freakin see anything unless you take it off. Then you need to put it back on. I found that a bit hard, because I always touched the lens with my forehead. That left greasy stains and created blurry spots. So I had to take it off again, clean it and try to put back on more carefully.
My best hope is in the MS hololens project.

Ive resisted the VR so far, with the intention of waiting for consumer edition and possibly some dedicated games of preference to go with that.
But im getting more and more worn down by all the awesome impressions from EVERYONE...

I think ill manage to wait a bit longer though, this year is full of non-VR games to enjoy and by this winter we will know alot more about the Rift and its various rivals.

You can use the keyboard for sure. Just learn to type completely blind.
Some buttons are easy to find, like the J, Enter, Backspace, Space, the arrows and the block (Ins, Home, Del...) above that. Good luck for the rest.

Even if it makes me throw up after half and hour and I never use it again - it's simply got to be tried! ED - especially space stations - are quite something with these things if you know what I mean!!

<vom>

The first time I used it at PAX South, I got dizzy. That was because we were sitting on barstools that were a bit wobbly due to the thick padding underneath to save our feet from 3 days of standing.

I got back on it 30 minutes later and put one of my feet on the ground, and everything was a-ok. I don't know how long I'd be able to play in one stretch, being completely shut off from the world tho. :)

I'm also waiting for the consumer version. The DK2 is really great, but if the consumer version has the best resolution, then I'll wait. Some of the text was very hard to read on the DK2.
