I am shocked that we are having this argument. I think this is all 100% clear.
Open is much more risky. You can get killed in open in 1 sec by an Elite player with engineered ship, and in private you can just jump away.
That is the reason all the players i know play only private.
They grind in private because they don't have any "material" reason to grind in open. Let's face it, we all like to grind. 99% of all MP players do.
Good missions and grind, that is MP gaming.
Open isn’t much more risky than Open. I’ve long considered the idea that players are much
more dangerous than NPCs to be a myth. They are different from NPCs, and provide
different challenges, but on the flip side, they are also vulnerable to tactics that would never work on NPCs, so it’s kind of a wash.
For example, I consider the “forum recommended” Supercruise technique to be nothing more than a sneaky way of convincing players to make it easier for others to interdict them. Which is one of the reasons why I don’t use it, the other being it’s slower than molasses. There are faster and safer routes to your destination, even in CGs, I rarely get approached when using them.
Plus, I’ve noticed that a lot of so-called “pirates” get confused when their target doesn’t follow their “script.” I’ve seen some of them keep repeating the same actions over and over again, expecting different results. It can be kind of amusing if I’m the right mood. Mostly, though, I simply find it an annoying interruption to my game session.
Many of the players I know fly in other modes due to poor network connections, and most do so because because certain players are simply not fun to play with, to the point that NPCs provide better content than they do. Which, given the quality of the NPCs in this game, is really saying something.
