General Open: Why you should play or not play.

Last I heard, vaping has finally got big enough for the bootleggers to start moving in and start selling dodgy mixes for cheap over the internet, and it's having roughly the result you'd expect from people going online and buying random unknown chemical mixes to put in their bodies instead of going to a reputable seller. A couple of people ending up in hospital from vaping god-knows-what clearly means that all vaping is dangerous.
I missed that one... Thanks for the update.

...pilot skill is the biggest play here, both in terms of engineering and piloting.
This makes sense - rather than the raging argument over engineering pro's / con's... skill, not only in the build, but in flying (aggressive & defensive) will be the deciding factor. The bar is raised by those who prefer PvP encounters and practise to this end - most of the ships I fly in open have been 'designed' with assistance from my squadron members (Loren's Reapers if anyone wants to see my playmates...) so are very hardy... Negated in part because of the pilot, who is a very casual PvP player so would present no contest to one who spends considerably more time in Player combat :)

Indeed, but the ships you mention... all they can do is to survive enough until they can highwake. This is not PvP.
And this is not a win either, it's a lose-lose situation. The PVP-er loses because he cant kill his target, the PVE-er loses because he's delayed in his mission, be it cargo/mining/whatever-activity-not-pvp-related.

Don't get me wrong, i've seen some really nice pvp movies, including the one you posted recently... but in current Elite, PVP does make sense only when it happens between pvp-ers.

I get where you're coming from, but theres a few caveats with it, one of them being location. If the PvE ship ends up in Shinrarta? Yeah he's boned. There doesnt have to be any comprimises made on a PvP vessel there.

At some of the more popular material haunts? A higher chance of fighting back because other ships will likely have taken a hit somewhere to jump out to that location.

Either way I must admit I struggle to see how it could be balanced past making engineering a little less OP. Combat builds will always be built to kill. They will always be built as close to perfectly for that task. No amount of module limiting or bias allowances for traditional PvE vessels will change that.

It's been in quite a few now from what I've heard, quite a few have died from them. Not to mention that popcorn lung thing that come up a year or so back.

And by old skool vape I mean vaporising the THC and other chemicals straight off the bud with heat. None of this gimicky mixture bull.
Wasn't the popcorn lung research disproved? (I believe the methodology used in the research was not based on general useage) There does appear to be far more research happening now that isn't financed by 'Big Tobacco' or 'Big Pharma' so the risks of vaping are being assessed with a little less bias. Even in the UK, concensus is that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking but still carries risk. I guess it'll be another 20+ years before we have better informed conclusions.

Wheeeeeyyyy only four pages in! There we go!

he forgot to put the /sarcasm off at the end of the post :)

Why struggle? The answer is right there: remove the combat builds - they are one of the sources of imbalance (the other one is the skill of the pilot)

Take that, griefer!

I'll make a deal with you OP. I'll stop peeps from playing in open, and complaining about PvP. All you have to do is stop other peeps from complaining about Commanders 'hiding' in Solo/PG. As a bonus I'll make sure that every trader fits an appropriate shield generator, if you can just get peeps to stop whining about CLogging.

Do we have a deal?

Yes, that's the kind of vapes I had in mind, not this artificial peachy nonsense, let alone tobacco liquids <shudder>. Though not necessarily "old-school": my vaporizer is a pretty modern and "cool" (literally!) high tech tool. I can afford such luxuries since I don't have to maintain a stinky car. 🚵‍♂️

But even then I'm far from recommending or white washing the risks, hell no! And definitely would prohibit it for younger people below 18. It's said to hamper your brain growth. You definitely don't want to end like me, young boy (if you are listening. It's an old fart '68 thingy, so don't be silly). The way I'm consuming is also somewhat unusual, but works for me: starts with about 3 weeks on full high all day long [1] followed by about 7 weeks of total abstinence, which has a plethora of advantages compared to regular consuming. One of it being a safety guard against addictions (the rest would be too much out of topic). Works for all sorts of addictions btw, even for playing ED... 🤖

[1] Yes, that's my weak spot, I can easily switch habits on and off but have a hard time when it comes to moderation. That was actually the main insight and incentive to stop smoking. Not that I was ill at this point - even after more than 30 years of chain smoking (70-100 cigs a day at the time when I stopped) but my wits told me that my lack of temperance will kill me on the long run.

That said, I've currently doubled the abstinence phase due to my eye surgery and I'm still sober like a tibetan monk right now. No issues whatsoever. I feel great!

Btw, always gives me a warm feel when meeting people who are thinking out of the box (without being downright daft, that is). (y)

Best way to go, certainly the cleanest method bar consuming in food. Awesome, nice one! There are some really nice ones out there an all.

Agreed, I started at 15 so 11 years at this point, had I known better then I wouldnt have started. Hell I wish I'd waited until I was at this point before trying anything. It's something that youths don't even realie a lot fo the time it seems, like openeing yourself up to a lifetime of reliance if care isnt taken. I expect I'm halfway there already my friend aha.

Mate I cant knock that, thats very sensible. Keeping a lid on it like that speaks volumes. Yeah I could probably do with a safeguard against that particular evil.. ED also has onionhead which only adds to the issue o_O

Holy cow.. 70-100 a day?! Thats actually a scary amount. I feel the heath issues now after 25 a day for a number of years chirst. Swear us youngsters are'nt made of the same stuff as previous generations. I've always been fairly hardy for my generation but not like that lol.

Oh damn, good luck with your recovery man. Hope any problems were sorted out for you.

Ditto, restores my faith in humanity knowing there are good people out there. Can't be common enough these days :)

Well, that would depend on what you mean by better optimized ;)

More ways to make the modes co dependent.

If FDev wants to make things equal between modes then the most sensible way of going about it is to tie them together in a way that is'nt the BGS.

What exactly that could entail I'm not sure of at this point but I will certainly give it some thought.

Its a tricky one... Powerplay is the one area i've seen where someone came up with a decent solution (which still wasn't liked by all of course).

The only solution that really seems to satisfy most (except the gankers) is to separate servers, but FD have said they won't do that.

Open mode and solo mode in ed are sort of tied together already as I understand it by reading the text below solo which states that in Solo you share the same world with other players but do not have direct contact with other commanders.

I've tried to play the game in open many times. Last night I tried going home to Jameson in open. I had the requisite clowns who tried to get behind me. We danced for a bit and they left. Then I spent minutes waiting outside the mail slot as I watched some idiot try to drive their corvette through the mail slot, upside down and on the wrong side. Then they got stuck.

While worth a chuckle or two, it got real boring, real quick. Maybe I'll try open again in a few months. Or maybe not. I'm really not the MMO type.

I mean, the problem there is "Jameson". That's like taking a trip to Syria and saying how horrible the entirety of Planet Earth is. Most of the planet isn't an active warzone. :p

True, but that's where my ships are, and I've gotten all the factions allied and get good missions there. I guess I'm too lazy to start over in another system. Plus there's the fact that I'm building or configuring ships all the time and Jameson is a good place to do that at. :)
