Open: Why?

I made the decision recently to only play in either Solo or PG. It is my little contribution to 'griefing the griefers'. If more people did it, the griefers would have to turn on each other for their content input, and we all know that won't happen.

I am not disadvantaged by my decision, I am not a member of any Squadron nor do I participate in PowerPlay. The only group I have technically upset is those that wish to use me as their content - sorry little children you miss out :D

I think maybe you are over estimating the impact your leaving has made to their gameplay..

To those players who think people should play in open: What incentive do I have to do so?

If I have no interest in other players (or proving anything) outside of friends - why should I?

It's "more dangerous"? Why because I am subject to wasting 10 minutes on a rebuy, including the time to make the credits? That's not fun or engaging gameplay. Its a sigh, one click, and I make a few jumps back to where I was. Even if the fight isn't utterly one sided its still just a waste of time as neither commander gains anything of value from it, aside from salt mining (mind you, I used to engage in that myself).

So why? The game gives no compelling reason to care about open.
none, I support you 100% staying out of OPEN

No, since you are providing zero substance much like the typical PVP encounter ;)

The question isn't about whether I should personally decide to do it, but that's the one you keep answering.

For me Open means the Elite Universe feels more alive. I might run into a friendly face at an engineer base or rare commodity location (and get or give help with cigars, brandy, meta alloys, etc). I might fly by and exchange a friendly "07" in an out-of-the-way system. At guardian sites, there's often commanders helping unlock blueprints with strangers. Flying back into the bubble from a long exploration trip is far more exciting in open. I've outrun a griefer or two. I've been shot down by a few. For me Open is more fun.
I would agree with you except those negative interactions provide nothing but lost time, while most other games I prefer to play on pvp servers simply because there's actually engaging interaction.

In games that require very different setups for pve and pvp they always struggle with horrible open world balance. The pvp player will always utterly slaughter the PVE ones simply because that player is not and cannot be properly prepared for most engagements as a direct result of those differences.

World PVP in nerdcraft used to be fun until they tried to balance PVP for the competitive areas. This resulted in horrendous imbalance in world PVP and eventual scrapping of the whole PVP server concept entirely as they merged everything and let players flag themselves (or not) in an attempt to "fix" the problem. If you set up for PVP you were worthless for most PVE aspects. If you set up for PVE, you get steamrolled by PVP players.

So they just wound up removing any kind of reward for it over time.

The net result is that pvp interactions became meaningless for both sides. They may have "fixed" this in the last few years but I can't be bothered.

I play in "Open", because:

1. It's not limited to 10K People per PG.
2. NPC's are boring
3. One can never be sure wether the other commander is friendly (keeps one cautious) or not. But most of them are.

I have absolutely nothing against anyone who wants to play in open. Aside from the chowderheads who kill people for literally no reason of any value, I understand it entirely.

I would PREFER to play in open if it wasn't just a waste of time to do so. It just provides no value. I don't even get anything for successfully defending myself. "Oh buy you didn't have to pay a rebuy!"

You know where else I don't have a rebuy? Solo.

I'm probably not the one you directed your question at, cause I don't have an oppinion on where you should play. But since I play mostly in open I'll answer anyway.

You can meet nice people in open, at least if you fly in areas with some traffic. You can chat a bit with them, even wing up. Do something together. You know, socialize. If thats nothing for you, than open is nothing for you.

Gankers are no issue, really. You can easily learn to survive any gank attempt, and if someone really insinsts in annoying you by interdicting you over and over again with no chance of harming you, you can just block him. So there is at least no downside to playing in open.
Unless you are going to a hotspot, like a CG system. There can be so many gankers that you just cant get anything done. But in this case you can still just switch to solo 'on-demand'.

So why raising the question beforehand, if you already made your choice? Trolling?

And these are all the reasons why I would prefer to play in open.

The issue is its grossly outweighed by the sheer inconvenience and lack of value of dealing with the negative players. As for blocking people, yeah that's fair. And that's what I typically do. But you can't block 100% of these people who play like clowns.

I play in open - except when playing with a friend (PG) or when I have no inclination to play with the chance of meeting another human (solo).

You could assume that I play ED in exactly the way I wish, which is exactly right for me.

But, any action associated with squadron goals are played in open (1), as that is the way they play :)

1: except for a couple of CZ's in a recent war that were briefly 'broken' in multi-player and only worked in solo...

There's a lot of people in here who are not actually reading the question and contributing nothing but butthurt or passive aggressive condescension.

This entire thing is directed at people who think the modes should be distinct and/or people should be forced into open. Why?

I provided all the substance anybody needs when regarding solo/pg/open.
As a devout forum-dweller, you aren't wrong.

Condescension however is simply exactly what the PVP system provides in this game, and absolutely nothing more.

Oh wow..."passive aggressiveness". The new "it-phrase".

I gave you an honest response...

But hey...Blaze your own trail.🤷‍♀️

I'll get my coat

You forgot about this

Yall have me somewhat mistaken.

I love PVP.

But only as long as both sides are on even ground. Ganking is for cowards and open doesn't really provide significantly more than just that regarding PVP encounters.
I have mentioned salt mining multiple times, including in my first post lil' fella.

And yet here you are providing just that lmao

IMO<
Open play is no different than solo or groups - same scenarios, gameplay, and missions without the possibility of meeting other players that you have in Open which I prefer for just that reason - which actually is the only difference between all 3 modes.
There is one difference in playing in open vs private or solo. And it's the main reason I almost never fly in open.

And, that is, you cannot take high resolution screenshots while in open.

My opinion is if you want to contribute to the galaxy in any way, you should only be able to do so in Open.
I've no problem with people who want to play alone, but there should be some consequence of being "anti social" and that should be an inability to impact 'shared' functions like the BGS.
