Actually Lave is the french word for lava before being an infinitive form of the verb "laver" so that would explain the heat of this stupid flamewar.
From what i have read on the french speaking forums, they just wanted to base their community in Lave, those french guys didn't plan to flip the local factions, nor harass the locals, nor start a goddamn war, they just wanted to play together there because it's a good area to play. But i guess it totally deserve a Galnet article about a "coup" (how archaic of you!) in Lave because someone who used google translate think it's a war declaration. I guess it's the level of journalism we can expect from galnet, especially after the recent articles. Can i suggest another article? It's called "Lave locals start mass riots after French Restaurant open in Lave Station!". It's about how the lave local through they were going to be cooked into frogs and snails shaped meals and eaten after someone badly translated an old french cuisine book....

Bit of a faux pas by FD then?

I can enjoy the usual English french-bashing when it's subtle (like the one in the old First Encounters newspapers) but in this case it's slightly targeted against members of the playerbase and not really subtle at all and it comes out as a knee jerk reaction against certain players, just because of their presence in one system and just because of their nationality.

Speaking of bad french translation: the title of EARL is the English rank equivalent to french title of Count. The Normand invaders started using earl instead of count because the word "count" was quite funny to the ears of the germanic language speakers living in england, like tthe saxons, who used a phonetic equivalent to describe a certain part of the female anatomy. So to stop the stupid "HEY HE CALLED HIMSELF A CoUNT!" jokes from the locals, the normands counts started using a variation of the germanic jarl (which was more like duke/prince in term of rank in Scandinavia but whatever). Where am i going? Well the female title for EARL is still Countess (because norman earls found the joke funny too now they weren't the target) and since apparently we are going to have a female model option for commanders, i guess the devs are probably going to give female rank title equivalent for the Empire faction, right?
So the empire should probably end up going up like that: outsider, serf, mistress, squire (shield maiden?), lady, dame, baroness, viscountess and the final two ranks: countess and countess.

vvv ahhh, the good old "xxx isn't a race, therefor it's not xenophobic" argument.

I came into this thread expecting to disagree. I halfway expected "lets have decals that give 5% to speed/whatever bonuses!"...

.. But I agree with your suggestion. Even if you could only use a Decal from a single faction at a time, it would be good.

Not having read the whole thread, I neither think that there is any real-world nationalism involved - on neither "side". Forming a player-groupe of the same mother-toung seems to be natural for me and the action (the take-over of 'Lave') is a valid goal.

I think that initiatives like this are awesome and very necessary to the game - even if they are heavily opposed by other commanders (in-game) and cause severe reactions. I could even imagine that some "official" forces might show up, sent by the Empire and the Federation alike, in order to restore peace in such an historical and emotional important star system! (Insofar: understandable, but still bad choice of your target system...)

The affiliation of your initiative into the GalNet news is AWESOME, in my opinion! It shows that FD is very aware of the forum activities and the player's actions in general! I like how they try to fill the galaxy with life, catering for the players, adopting their role of a "game master" in a large role-playing game!
Personally, I dont have experiences in MMO role-playing games. A colleague of mine, however, has. And he said, that this is NOT what usually happens.

Keep at it, DF! There are commanders out there who appreciate your dedication! :)

To be fair you could be goons... Then youd get even more hate..

Spacism is real folks.

Yep, just banter right? Even from FD. Player initiatives are fine and I'm glad there's people more imaginative than me and have the motivation to do so.

There'll always be someone who takes it too far and most see it for what it is. It feels like stating the obvious and standing in the way doing so :)

As a Scot in Canada the Celt/Ottawa/English channel/language thing has me all torn up who to cheer on

I've read the OP's post in the French Thread, and he actually said conquest was not the intent ..
Some unfortunate language used though, "invasions" are rarely peaceful, more or less by definition.
Looks like the first serious test of the integrity of the Elite Pilots' Federation then ..
But will it be Civil War or Détente ..only you can decide.

Love it. Awesome.

nostalgic longings possible decal?

We used to call em stickers when I was young...

I'd like a nod back to the elite gold mod I had which had furry dice in your cockpit and a "my other ship is a thargoid" sticker on the back.

Anyone else feeling nostalgic for anything?

All these comments and finally someone who gets it. Have some rep.

Yup, we all got the merc skull. Not sure if this is a pirate symbol or not, due to the pirate bases with the scull don't really act like pirate bases. Not hidden, in plain sight of everybody, most with no blackmarkets, you can pick up all your bounties for the local facktion and they accept everybody to land no questions asked. :S

An interesting idea about decals

Got an interesting idea about decals, and before everyone jumps up and down saying that they are pointless because we cant see them unless we have 3rd person view etc. My take is that though we cant see them (like the paintjobs) i like the fact they are still there.

Now the idea is this. User generated decals. FD could give us a decal size say 120 x 120 pixels and we could upload our own designs. Now these come in two flavours what i call generic and personalised. The so called generic ones are uploaded and the uploader gets them for free but they can be sold in the shop for others to use for examples a flames design could be generic and shared amongst others. The personalised ones where maybe there is a slogan or the cmdr's name on it could be uploaded but paid for by the uploader and not shared in the shop. And to stop everyone going decal crazy there could be a decal limit of two eg. one of each or two generic or personalised.

Just an idea because the skull decal doesnt do it for me at the moment.
