General / Off-Topic Planet Safari- next up.

I have been so disappointed that Zoo Tycoon 2 was it for PC zoos. Wildlife Park is Ok, but I'd love a true successor. Planet Safari as a PC zoo simulation game would be awesome! Although I'd love it as an expansion for Planet Coaster, so that we could have a park that has both rides and great animal exhibits.

Now if Frontier would take on EA for the life simulation genre. Sims 4 is pretty disappointing, I'd love to see what Frontier would do for a life sim game.

It's real.
I LOOKED. I AM FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?????

ME TOO!!!!!!!

OW YEAH!!!!!!!!!! I'm having a huge big smile right now! Oh yeah! [big grin]

A new Zoo simulation game from Frontier for PC (personal computer) would be beyond amazing! Oh yeah!

Consider me a buyer of this Safari Planet game, if it is made by Frontier.
- Safari Head Club, would love to be a member of that. [yesnod]
- Safari Planet Early Bird Pass, would be awesome to have that [yesnod]

As an expansion of Planet Coaster yea, I'm in. I just don't see myself buying a game dedicated to Safari, I'm not 100% sure that there is even a market crying out for something like this either tbf, seems a little too niche.

Planet Transport, ❤︎❤︎❤︎❤︎ yes! I've been waiting for something to replace Transport Tycoon and Cities In Motion.

This is not a planet coaster expansion. This is probably a new game in the Zoo Tycoon CMS genre, built for PC and self-published by Frontier (unshackled by Microsoft). This series has pushed a LOT of units over the years (from the time of Bluefang), and if done competently, it could become a pretty major franchise again for the CMS genre.

I noticed this one myself a couple of months back when I was involved in a discord conversation with a few fellow mods.

At the time we were discussing Frontier's potential future plans for Elite: Dangerous and how the work being done in Planet Coaster could be replicated and expanded upon within Elite: Dangerous being that it's the same underlying engine (crowds, first person walking, voxel terrains and beautiful atmospheric effects come to mind from Planet Coaster). Inevitably the discussion turned to "The Outsider":

[video=youtube;Glr71X-cr84]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glr71X-cr84[/video]

For those of you not in the know this game was being developed by Frontier a few years back but Codemasters pulled the plug and cancelled the game in 2011. We were discussing how the procedural city generation tech from this canned game would be a perfect fit for when we get to land on Earthlike worlds and speculated that Frontier's next game once they complete Planet Coaster would be to revisit this canned game, perhaps under a new name if Codemasters retained any of the IP.

That lead me to look into who owned the trademark which turned out to have been originally registered to Frontier but dropped. However whilst I was there I noticed Planet Safari had been trademarked at the same time as Planet Coaster was.

It's cool someone else has posted about it because it means I can share this story without worrying about how it may be perceived. (Although I'm no more knowledgeable than anyone else here, just making assumptions on what this means like everyone else).

I also agree that Planet Safari is likely to be a Zoo Tycoon-esque game and being that Frontier did the recent Xbox One version they are familiar with the genre. I can't say I've played it myself but I know from looking at reviews that some people were disappointed to a certain extent. Mainly due to bad UI, auto-pathing and hitting an enclosure limit despite having lots of room in the park. We don't however know how much of the downsides were due to Microsoft's direction or limitations enforced by the hardware as it also needed to be compatible with the Xbox 360 which is getting on these days. I'm sure Frontier will have taken subsequent feedback onboard before they move ahead with a new IP in this genre just as they have with RCT3 in Planet Coaster.

It is actually a smart choice for Frontier to go in this direction next because Animals can play into both Planet Coaster (Wild-esque expansion) and Elite: Dangerous (procedurally generated animal life) in the future. That's one of the things with Frontier, they're always looking to expand the capabilities of their engine. Whatever they're working on now or in the future will be relatively straight forward to adapt to their other games in some shape or form.

Yes I would buy that one. if it is nice and deeper than the Wild expansion to RCT3, that was a little too "shallow" and dumbed down (it is ok because after all it is RCT game mainly). But if it is proper and nicely made, with thought made of the animals and their habitat (larger = better for animals) and penalty given for having bad zoo with tiny enclosures.
And that to mix animals might cause some animals to predate on other animals.

That is, a more grown up zoo game, not all mush mush cute (like those mobile games) but more about real life. It is not bad because even kids know it is not good to treat animals badly you know?

But of course I hope Frontier won't "stop" with Planet Coaster to make this one. I want Planet Coaster to be supported forever. hahaa. <3

Frontier was a contractor on that, with limited artistic freedom. The game was decent, but had two big problems.

1. A low enclosure limit due to the contractual need to fully support XBOX 360...eight years after its launch.
2. A UI constrained by the need to use a game pad. This was the reason for the auto-pathing feature too.

A self-published PC game by Frontier is a completely different proposition. [up]

wow, this is great news. i love this. zoo tycoon (the original by bluefang studios) was one of my favorite games. i actually enjoyed it more than roller coaster tycoon. but what do you think this will be? its own standalone game? or an expansion to planet coaster?

Considering Frontier made a Zoo Tycoon game, Planet Safari will hopefully be a standalone game.

There's another potential option for Planet Safari besides just being a "standalone game" or "expansion" (and I really hope Frontier is listening in on this conversation): if their games detected each others' presence on your computer (either from Frontier's own Launcher, Steam, or wherever), then all/most of the assets available within one game would automatically become available to use in the other. It's a simple concept really and one that's been done to varying degrees before, and especially if both PC and PS utilized a common engine it should pose no problem at all. It would be the best of both worlds both for Frontier's business angle (extra incentive to purchase the other game as well as enabling each game to continue having its own distinctive product identity and development/design process) as well as fans (easily incorporating any combination of safari-themed park or simply a park with some animal exhibits/shows).

oh man this is great. zoo tycoon was one of my favorite games. honestly, i liked zoo tycoon more than roller coaster tycoon.

I wonder if Frontier is going to use Planet XxSimulatorxX model for a wide variety of sim games [woah]

Planet Coaster
Planet Safari
Planet Waterpark
Planet City
Planet Planet...wait

(where is the upvote button when you need it?)

But it does seem plausible! Planet Planet would be a space colonization sim obviously. [haha]

Sounds very interesting indeed! [happy]

Hard to tell if it's a new stand-alone game or an expansion yet. Though, from what I've seen Frontier can do with animals, it sounds really good.

I want to play Planet Planet now !!! [big grin]

I am still waiting for the expansions/DLC:
-Planet Planet: Plan it (a sort of like what the NAM is for SimCity4)
-Planet Planet: Plant it (flora&fauna expansion)
-Planet Planet: Planets (more planets to colonize obviously)
