Surprised and not very convinced by this pack, but I'll withhold my final judgement until I have full knowledge on how the new exhibit works, how versatile the new pieces are and how all the animals look.
What I will give my opinion on is the animal choices.
I see mixed feelings by different people. It happens all the time. I believe some people were even unhappy with the animal selections for the Africa pack (which I think most of us would agree that it had the perfect mix in terms of how diverse the animals were and their very high popularity). Reality is it is not possible to please everyone. I personally don't care much for the red fox even if it's an European animal.
To me, even with the limitations of such crepuscular spooky theme, this pack shows two things:
1. The devs still try to please the community with their animal choices to a large extent. As we stand, the habitat animals rank 10, 20, 31, 80 on the meta-wishlist. Not the most popular, but not niche animals either. Plus any bat, independently on if they’re categorized as habitat or exhibit animals, were quite requested aswell.
There are many factors to have in mind here when it comes to choosing the DLC roster:
a) First and foremost, how popular animals are.
b) How common animals are in captivity (sometimes?).
c) How each region or biome is currently represented in the game.
d) How easy it is to make an animal.
e) The roadmap for future DLC animals.
f) How popular animals are within their working environment.
g) Insert a factor here I or we might not even be aware of?
I believe sometimes the last three are overlooked by the community. Granted, the f) one should be their last priority but specially in animal packs, there are certain oddball choices that could be explained by this. Keeping a healthy working environment and, most importantly, motivation is also important and tbh I'd rather create an animal I like that an animal I don't like or is indifferent to me. Likewise, I'd rather be happy to create an animal my working colleagues like that some creature nobody cares about. This might explain things like the inclusion of the Nile lechwe or even the proboscis monkey.
And the e) factor leads me to my next point:
2. To me, this pack confirms that the devs think of the future DLCs and animal choices way in advance and therefore may save some “flagship animals” (I don’t like this concept) for future packs to maintain the hype and support in the long term. There is no way they’d choose this roster and not include the Tassie devil if it wasn’t going to be added later down the line. It’d make no sense at all. And given that birds might be a thing from now on, these two things are for me indicators that support will continue beyond Christmas and possibly for one more full year.
Anyway that’s my take on it.
