Hey flyauburn, I'm not flying commercially, I actually work for an aerospace company out in the Middle East (Performance software for the A320). 777 driver is actually a family nickname for my old man, he used to be an A330/340 skipper, we called him bus driver

he moved to the 777 with Qatar before he retired
My flying is done in the UK during the Summer. Unfortunately not much of a GA scene out here in the Gulf.
.
Very cool! I fly the Citation 680 currently in the U.S. and always like meeting other aviators who enjoy Elite.
And I agree that we could use some sort of HUD guidance that could be turned on/off (just like orbit lines ) for what are essentially all VFR approaches right now. Like you said, the current standard in aviation is that all visual approaches are backed up with some sort of guidance (ILS/RNAV etc.)
Half the time I don't even look at it and just enjoy conducting a visual approach, but I do glance at it from time to time for confirmation and the co-pilot makes callouts for corrections based on the instrumentation, not to mention the airplane itself ("glideslope glideslope", or "too low, gear" and my favorite "sink rate sink rate terrain terrain pull up!").
Elite actually already has one of these; "Warning, Landing Gear Not Deployed". I think a sink rate and pull up warning would help a lot of CMDRs that are crashing on planets, and having ILS guidance on the HUD would also. When we get atmospheric planets , if they do it correctly, we will definitely need it. I see them going the Synthetic Vision route though. The entire canopy is a HUD so the sky is the limit, pun intended. Before you can "see" in Elite on atmospheric planets with low or zero visibility it would be really cool if what you saw was a wireframe representation of what is actually there (kinda like 1984 elite!!).
And for now, we could all be getting used to it and would be ready when the update drops (end of 2017?), and for now if you don't want to use it you don't have to.
Personally, my number one request right now is a planetary FMS where I can enter Lat/long to create a waypoint, and bookmark planetary waypoints and/or stored flight plans, and have corresponding HUD/RADAR data to guide me. Currently navigating on a planet is garbage IMO.
Anyway, safe flying in all its forms CMDRs.
