Planetary navigation, debate.

This would be a nice addition.

It's not about automation, but guidance...make it togglable and everyone is happy.

YES! What you are showing is a "HITS", or "Highways in the sky" representation which would be really cool. I'd settle for a very basic "GPS" that allowed me to plot LAT/LONG (boy it was a pain in the a r s e trying to find those Barnacles the first time on MEROPE 5C!) and also specific waypoints, and then showed up as a course line on the radar and a pip/waypoint marker on the heading indicator in the HUD.

777Driver and Lysander Lysan, what the hell are you doing playing pretend spaceships when you have REAL ACTUAL aircraft?! :D

Now it is I who is genuinely jealous! :)

.... They get to land on a populated planet before the rest of us; however, I imagine it's tough trying to retrofit that gimbaled beam & go to deep space ;)

After a year and a half playing this game, and having pretty much tried every single role and occupation I have this to say:

Approaching the space station / outpost / planetary starport and docking is still my favorite moments in the game.

There's something exquisitely soothing about it. I just love it, even after all this time.

Do not dare taking that away from me :D I don't want to be forced to follow a trail.

That being said, having this system as optional is fine with me.

Wow. I clearly haven't been griding enough in RL. The day I can afford a $600,000 airplane is the day hell freezes over. Also very jealous! I would have a pretty impossible task raising the spare to afford a piper archer too!!

Kudos to you both!

Nothing to be jealous about, maybe there is something in your life I'm jealous about, utopia do not exist. Everything has a price and its not always money :)

I prefer the current free flight and just say "coming 'round for a seven zero niner..." :D while I rotate and descend and sideways thrust into alignment with the pad.

I have nothing against the suggestion, as long as it is optional.

Got grounded in a tropical country :D I'd tell you all about it one day over a pint.

Sounds like I have some fellow aviators in this thread. I suspect there are quite a few of us that play Elite, only natural. 777driver what airline do you work for?

I guess I disagree. It's not addressing any problem, it's just making something that demands a modicum of skill and concentration, easier. I enjoy that side of things.

Hey flyauburn, I'm not flying commercially, I actually work for an aerospace company out in the Middle East (Performance software for the A320). 777 driver is actually a family nickname for my old man, he used to be an A330/340 skipper, we called him bus driver :) he moved to the 777 with Qatar before he retired

My flying is done in the UK during the Summer. Unfortunately not much of a GA scene out here in the Gulf.

It sounds like you have completely failed in understanding what the Op is asking for.

I would much rather see the ability to bookmark locations on planets, and the ability to plug in coordinates on a planet and have it guide you to that point.

Very cool! I fly the Citation 680 currently in the U.S. and always like meeting other aviators who enjoy Elite.

And I agree that we could use some sort of HUD guidance that could be turned on/off (just like orbit lines ) for what are essentially all VFR approaches right now. Like you said, the current standard in aviation is that all visual approaches are backed up with some sort of guidance (ILS/RNAV etc.)

Half the time I don't even look at it and just enjoy conducting a visual approach, but I do glance at it from time to time for confirmation and the co-pilot makes callouts for corrections based on the instrumentation, not to mention the airplane itself ("glideslope glideslope", or "too low, gear" and my favorite "sink rate sink rate terrain terrain pull up!").

Elite actually already has one of these; "Warning, Landing Gear Not Deployed". I think a sink rate and pull up warning would help a lot of CMDRs that are crashing on planets, and having ILS guidance on the HUD would also. When we get atmospheric planets , if they do it correctly, we will definitely need it. I see them going the Synthetic Vision route though. The entire canopy is a HUD so the sky is the limit, pun intended. Before you can "see" in Elite on atmospheric planets with low or zero visibility it would be really cool if what you saw was a wireframe representation of what is actually there (kinda like 1984 elite!!).

And for now, we could all be getting used to it and would be ready when the update drops (end of 2017?), and for now if you don't want to use it you don't have to.

Personally, my number one request right now is a planetary FMS where I can enter Lat/long to create a waypoint, and bookmark planetary waypoints and/or stored flight plans, and have corresponding HUD/RADAR data to guide me. Currently navigating on a planet is garbage IMO.

Anyway, safe flying in all its forms CMDRs.
