Planetary Tech Improvements: 24hr stream

I very rarely see anyone raise my complaint about planetary surfaces...
There are no overhangs anywhere in the galaxy.

Not sure it's spoilerific, pretty basic complaint. The planet surfaces are just height maps, but I think that's why they're going to redo rocks, so they can be used for more planetary features, like
overhangs and sheer cliff faces
at least one would hope...

Though the alternative as done in No Man's Sky is not really better, crazy arcs everywhere ... ;)

(And yes of course, NMS is by no means, and probably doesn't want to be, any close to be comparable to Elite in terms of graphics or sound. No.)

Yeah looks good but I'm much more interested about the look of it when sitting on its surface. We already have amazing looking planets from orbital view that we unfortunately can't land on (yet). So did they show any close-ups?

Sometimes I'm under the impression that some players seem to prefer a good looking orbital view over the close look at surface level while others, like me, when in doubt are more interested in the latter. Strange...

Btw, I'm pretty sure I've already seen this planet in an older life stream.

if i had to pick i would go for details on the surface too (that artist concept that the devs are aiming for for Q3/4 2018 is simply sublime, if they get even 70% too that i will be happy as a pig in muck)... but, the view from in space is cool too, so i say have both, its not like i ask much, :D

During FX FDev mentioned that (by Q4) they are completely redoing the rocks as surface features meaning there will be huge boulders and and other stuff that allow such surface irregularities.
This Q1 update cannot come soon enough, though. :)

That sure looks stunning.
If they can bring that level of improvement to the rest of the game too, "Beyond" could really become something to look forward to.

Currently EDs plan-tech is mostly the 'raw surface' (which is done very well) plus some pebbles (which is not done well at all). Some other space game recently added planets, and you can see the impact well there. Its 'raw surface' is miled behind what ED has, but with some clever placement of rock assets it suddenly looks quite nice indeed. It seems FD focussed on getting the foundation, or the raw surface, right first, and will now focus on the second layer. for Q4 2018. :)

As I was just speculating over on Reddit....?

If atmospheric planets to arrive next year then I'd imagine they'd come alongside the upgrades to rocks, surface features and more importantly, lighting (as that's more important for atmospheric planets). I don't think that these will appear before then as it wouldn't make sense to have an iteration of them before they make those changes.
