Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

I'm going to try coupling my cardboard setup with an EdTracker setup. (I don't have linking privilege yet, but a quick search will turn it up)

I have had good luck using FacetrackNoIR for tracking with IR LED setups as well.

The components for the EdTracker unit should be coming in from a random scattering of places on the internet in a few weeks. If I can assemble it without breaking space-time I'll let you know how it works out! :)

Got google cardboard but the quality is horrible.

I mean i can barely read the words. Am I doing something wrong?
What settings do you use?

Resolution depends on your phone. I have the Nexus 5 - same resolution as the DK2 - and text is just barely legible. So for me, it's more a fun experience than a long-term way to play the game.

If your computer can run it, the optimal game resolution is the same width as your phone and double the vertical resolution. This resolves the aspect ratio problem (and gives you supersampling on the vertical axis).

Google cardboard also gets blurrier if the viewer starts slipping on your face, so make sure it's tight.

Use Elite Display Switcher, and change the text to Green. Helps a bunch on the DK2, may also help with Google Cardboard. In a typical RGB display (Bayer array), there are twice as many green pixels as red or blue. This plus the greater distortion with yellow / red makes the default text the worst.

Hm, letme try that.

Your HUD must be bright green (if your phone has a pentile display). Also helps to turn up your HUD brightness from your right panel... which always seemed too bright when playing on a monitor, but doens't in VR (at least in the rift).

You have to purchase the full version of the programme. The free test version expires after a few minutes.

Limelight is an alternative for Nvidia cards. There might be others, but I don't know.

Hey, sorry if this is slightly off topic in here, but do any of you have any suggestions how I can force the elite window into a more suitable resolution/aspect ratio? I have an Asus laptop so I can't make a custom resolution like someone suggested in a different thread here so the picture on my phone ends up squished. I'm using trinus gyre, by the way.

Sorry, but it's always going to be horrible. GC was never meant as more than a tongue-in-cheek proof-of-concept. You can probably make it marginally better with some of the hud color changes but the overall experience will not improve much.

hello gents i have had my homebrew vr working for a while now....it took me a lot of fiddling.
i use a colorcross 3d viewer.(looks like a mini rift and i have boared out the nose more)) i have velcroed to the side a led delan clip for headtracking with a modded ps3 cam,the phone i use is a galaxy s2(ideally need a slightly bigger phone),i reverse tether via usb from pc to phone for good latency, the program i use to stream games is called kainy...the paid version(only a few quid on play store).

i play with fov slightly more zoomed in than normal, have facetracknoir giving me the headtracking, and 3d sbs activated in elite.
(also have taken lenses out and glued them in the other way-closer to screen-no black box issue)
i can read all text(with a bit of a one eyed approach here and there lol).
with headphones and astra voice attack aswell, this is a fantastic experience and i urge anyone who is thinking of doing this to do so.
words cant describe what its like to actually be in your cockpit in 3d looking out the windows for the very first time.

the real trick and issue with mobile vr is the stream latency of the game(s) from pc to phone.....reverse usb tethering is the only way you will get as close to the original fps.

wireless is workable, but a hardwired connection is key.

Can anyone confirm if a nexus 7 will fit in a colorcross? Or what the best 7" device for a colorcross would be? My Galaxy Alpha is just too small to see things properly. :-(

no mate...no 7 inch devices will fit inside....you could strap it to the front as the screen on your tab is exactly same size as the colorcrosses max opening.
i tried with a cheapo tab just to see if it filled the fov....it did....but images wont match up....you will need different lenses.
