Please Abandon FPS (First Person Shooter) part of Odyssey

That doom prediction does at least have the trend line pointing the right way. ;)

About three years left, if that pattern holds, and then the mods can have a rest.
Oh, so Odyssey was "just a blip" after-all...

I don't see any way how ambling around on foot in carriers would make me happy. Without combat it'd pretty much be a pure walking simulator. It doesnt have much exploration and latter especially competes with the SRV already.

FPS has so much potential, I really hope they put some more focus and effort into it. I appreciate the additions and small, but welcome touches to it since Ody launch, but it just seems like such a blank canvas in many ways. Not just pew pew stuff, but exploration, science, even mystery scenarios where you need to actually read info you come across and relay the correct answers in a multiple choice format for example.

Elite Dangerous is a spaceship game, first and foremost.
(Eve Online attempted something similar with “Captain’s Quarters,” with a planned move toward walking in stations, years ago. EO lost hundreds if not thousands of players, and never recovered from that. Why? because EO is also a spaceship game first and foremost, although it never compared to what Frontier achieved with their fantastic universe, spaceships, and flight. Elite Dangerous had the character, most games only hope to achieve.)
I have banged this pot before. Obviously, CCP had major failures to draw experience from that got them refocused on EVE's core features, including Captain's Quarters and Dust 514. Sort of. Anyway, the inevitable and untrumpable counter-argument to Elite Dangerous being "a spaceship game" is that, right from Kickstarter, it was planned to be more than that. The current state of EDO is underwhelming, but its core feature (walking around and doing things) does align with what has always been planned for Elite.

And this unavoidably includes shooting at things.

Going into offtopic territory here, but this is actually interesting, considering FDEV have expanded their game portfolio significantly.
Most of them they haven't particularly encouraged use of the forums, though, and in the case of their latest F1 Manager release, seem to have actively tried to discourage it in favour of Reddit/Discord.

Possibly fewer new threads in the Elite forum since most subjects have been initiated, so it's better to continue an existing thread.

“Elite is a spaceship game foremost”, I heard this before.

Elite started as a spaceship game, that’s true. But will it remain “just a spaceship game” despite the technological revolution, that’s going on right now? I’ve supported ED back in 2012, because I figured they finally have the tools to make a galaxy simulator, not just ship simulator, like previous games, which I also played, for a little while. Always liked fps games, rpg games, simulators, so from my point of view, whoever gets all of that fit into the same canvas coherently, gets a round of applause from me. But yeah, probably everyone’s history makes their appetites skew in particular direction.

People tried to do this in 90-ies and failed. They keep trying in 2023 and slowly getting better at it. Elite is the most appropriate canvas for experiments in collision of genres. Which is why “please abandon fps” call is so alien to me. Perhaps someone can explain a little more why ED is just a space game, whether there’s logic to it other than personal preference.

It's a space game which happens on many planets other than Earth. Just like Starship Troopers is a space adventure even though much of it focuses on infantry. Science fiction has many facets and they just added another one to this game, which is great. I'm not extremely thrilled by the boilerplate content here either, but this is only the first iteration. Cut them the time to bring the technology to maturity and then there will come more interesting things to do on foot. Even then, nobody is obliged to play any parts they aren't interested in.

I enjoy the Odyssey FPS as a mild diversion from other faster paced looter shooters that I play.

They won't drop it. It will be a cul de sac of development like so many other features in the game.

CQC on legs.

Definitely happy with the G3 gear I purchased and see no reason to grind G5 gear.

If they manage to integrate it with ships (repair, research. on foot combat, etc.) it will have meaning for the core game.

FPS doesn't appeal to me at all, but I love walking around on planet surfaces doing the Exobiology thing. Plenty of other games do FPS stuff. I figure having a simple FPS in ED is probably good as a kind of first pass at giving space legs something to do. I figure what will happen is that other activities such as exobiology, hacking, maintenance, prospecting etc. will be more fleshed out as time goes by.
