Name change? No. I think this might lead to a bad precedent when people start to ask to change every name in game. And instead of getting new features will get naming simulator :) But I don't like the cockpit design. Sure ship look rather attractive from distance but when I look it in the face and up in close - I want to excuse myself and run away. Ugh! Ugly.

Looks nothing like an Adder of yore... should have been called something else from the start but they won't change it.

The ship and player view rolls round the central forward axis of the ship. It only looks like the stars are rotating around the pilot because the pilot is more or less central compared to the with if the ship *cobra. This has confirmed by FD.

Why should FD change the name of the current Adder because a minority don't like it currently (when the majority don't care or like it the way it is - according to the results of this poll).

This is such a minor issue to take odds with IMO.

Utterly ridiculous. Please find something more productive to do with the copious amounts of time you clearly have on your hands.

Hi there.

I have seen the "3 Series" 320d which was added in 2012 and I must say I am a little disappointed. Not because I think the vehicle has been "rushed", is "lazy", or "ugly" as some people are saying. In fact, I rather like the vehicle itself. However, I have an issue with the name of this vehicle. This vehicle is not the 3 series from previous years. The 3 series, however, has diverged so much from the original design that it is unrecognisable.

The hard lines of the original are replaced with a rounded car, with almost no flat surfaces, or hard edges, other than the skirting.

In addition, they even dared to add extra doors to the thing.

The striking wedge nose of the original has been replaced by a rounded, bulbous front.

The window has become much more tilted. While I appreciate that the designer must consider driver visibility, it is totally different to the original 3 Series.

I include here a few versions of the 3 Series from previous generations.

Here we have the first generation

It features here as the unfortunate victim from a tree.

Then, in 1995, it was updated graphically, remaining roughly the same shape.

Finally, in 2012, a car was released, referred to by many as a 3 Series.

As I am sure you can see, the earlier images all feel aesthetically similar, while the release model of the 3 Series in 2012 is rather different. Something happened during development of the car, since the concept phase, which caused BMW to radically change the design. I suspect the desired to fit the car to the quizzically-popular Audi design style, which I feel they have done. However, that's means that it is now radically different from the original 3 Series.

What I would like is a simple name change. The car itself is fine. I don't want it scrapped and redesigned, I don't want it removed. However, this car does not look like a 3 Series to drivers who have seen 3 Series cars from previous years. It's not the same car, and should not share the same name.

TL;DR
I would ask BMW to Please change the name of the 3 Series to something else. It looks like a new car, and should have a new name.

Thanks to anyone who read my wall of text :)

Hopefully this puts how silly this thread is into perspective. A significant amount of time has passed since the older game settings. Naturally, creators will sell things with an older item's name to cash in on that brand loyalty. This is normal.

Ladies and gentlemen, in order of appearance :

The BMW E21,
The BMW E21 after a crash,
The BMW E36,
and finally, the BMW F30.

This is exactly what I am saying. You prove my point. People update designs, but the designation changes. There is even precedent in the game, with the Viper, Eagle, and Cobra. Adder MKIII for president.

The 320d designation, by the way is not a model name so much as a spec designation. It's a 3 series with a 2 litre, diesel engine. It's similar to the 1.6, 2.0, 3.5 on the back of many cars.

Finally, nice example, because the change from the E21 to F30 is indeed similar to the adder to adder MKIII. Much more rounding, softening (though they have yet to add wings).

+1 its Utterly ridiculous

It may not mean anything to you, but to some of us, it's a small problem that could be fixed with a simple update of the ship description, the eagle and viper are both updated mk numbers, but only mentioned in the description, unlike the cobra, which for some reason is designated MKIII in the ship name itself.

What harm would it do to you? Why are you against this easy fix for people who do care about this?

And that is precisely my point. It doesn't matter what the individual version is referred to, as it's clearly a continuation of the same series. As there are no other versions in the game and yet stands on its own due to a non-derivative design, it does not need clarifying.

If you want to get lore-based, Zorgon bought Outworld, and are reinvigorating the Adder series. As you say, it's clearly not the same ship, (Unlike the Cobra and Viper, which do need the model clarification due to their similarities), so the name alone should be carrying all the weight it needs to. It very much appears to be as intended.

It may be a "small" problem to you, but to most of us, it is utterly banal to argue about something so trivial as a name of a ship that does not look like the original 10 polygon ship that it is meant to replace. The original design was
1) based on a ship design limited by 1984 technology, and
2) based on an in-game chronology that is now 200 years out of date.

You might think it's a problem that the name is given to a ship that bears little resemblance (though it does bear some) to the original 10 polygon ship, but you thinking it's a problem doesn't mean you can have your ideas take precedent over the design ideas of the company who are developing the game, nor the vision of a man who co-wrote the original game.

...The adder, however, has diverged so much from the original design that it is unrecognisable as an adder...

Hadn't seen the new Adder until this post. My first reaction as a 1984 Elite/Frontier player: "W.T.F.! It's just a chubby hauler!" It's not an Adder, guys! It's doesn't look anything like one. That's like taking a cobra and making it look like a Type 6 and then being all innocent like "What?.." smh.

Don't rename it - REDESIGN IT. That's not an Adder! Make it more boxy. Man I was really looking forward to the little Adder (nostalgia). But now... ugh. Please redesign it! Thanks!

Their vision was laid out clearly in their amazing concept art for the Adder. I don't know why it changed, and that is something I would like to hear about at some point. Why and how this ship became the adder, rather than the ship from the concept art. In addition, as I have said before the "limited by 1984 technology" does not hold any water, since we have the sidewinder, eagle, cobra, python, anaconda, etc. These were all limited by 1984 technology when designed first, and were overhauled in FE2, FFE, and best rendition of all, Elite Dangerous, without becoming something totally foreign to what they were in previous games. As to point 2... I don't even know what that means? That it's a 200 year old design? Well sure, that's why calling it the Adder MKIII or something would satisfy people who expected the Adder from the concept artwork. Stuff changes. We get that. But this is radically different from the original adder. A different , or modified, name would reflect that.

I would love you to point out how it bears any resemblance to the original ship. That point aside however, of course it's not my place to push my ideas on Frontier. I'm not even arguing that they need to include the original adder concept as a ship, or that this needs to be removed, or replaced. If Braben and Frontier want this to be the adder, they will just happily ignore me, and others who feel this way, people will accept it, and move on. But I certainly feel that there is a tiny change that can be made to make everyone involved happy. Call it the MKIII or some other name altogether. And I believe that if some of the developers see this, they may accept the view I put forward, that this ship is so unlike the adder of previous games, that it needs a small name change so as to make it fit well into the lore of the game.

Для данного вопроса есть объективные причины, это не прихоть, и никто не будет менять имя каждому непонравившемуся кораблю.

There is a concretic reasons for this, it's not a fad, and nobody will change the name of the ship just because it's unliked.

My disappointment lvl with choice of new adder design is on par with choice of Ben Affleck playing Batman.

Concept design was much more like old adder.
To me this is Hauler mk2.
