please don't confuse PvPers with griefers

Who said anything about "agree to" If in GTA V you play the assassin but take out a car with C4.. you pay the replacement. A heck of an anti grief deterrent.
Beyond that, if you repeatedly gank someone you end up being funneled on a server with others that do the same thing..

In the end, I can see why someone who was trying to do a cargo run or was returning from a mining session would be upset if they got PvPed and not only lost all the cargo but also the replacement cost of the ship which for a cobra is upwards of 125k.. this could represent 2 - 6 hours of effort.
So what if the attacking ship was the one that had to pay the insurance.? :)

Meh.. Im quite content in solo mode anyway...
PvP
Griefing
Solo Mode
No impact...

In 84 there was solo mode, and there is one now too... I'm good :D

Forcing pirates to pay for other peoples ships would really break the immersive experience. That is a horrible idea. Might as well remove the pirate NPC's as well and add unicorns that greet you and give you space rainbows.

i do take it personal, infact i take it so personal that i uninstalled the game a few hours ago.
i have been bullied by you anti pvp types since beta and i refuse to be compared to a griefer,
i despite griefing by all my heart.
and im into pvp for the same reasons i like any other sport, to challenge myself and to try and beat the better man.
but clearly you types don't get it so im out of here.

So you uninstalled the game because of something someone said on the forums about your playstyle? You know they have nothing to do with the game and you come here voluntarily. I completely agree with your side of the argument but seriously.... get a thicker skin. Its a game. Enjoy it how you want. What they say doesn't matter.

I almost dont believe thats the reason you uninstalled the game.

to those thinking PVP should be consensual only in space - if you walk down the street in the dark waving your shiny new iphone around, do you not expect to get mugged?

Ah, the good old internet, where everyone can have an opinion but anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. :D

Ill focus on one point here, the comment from the PvP side that others can just play group/open.

Indeed, and I do not understand anyone who plays open and then is not willing to get involved in PvP. This is simply why i do not play in open. I do not want to be killed by another player. I like co-op play, not PvP, its quite simple.

However, the problem with groups/solo is that it splits the community, with open being de-facto PvP.

I've suggested it before, and i'm still fairly convinced its a good idea, and that's a PvP toggle (and i note someone else mentioned it earlier). It could be locked by profile, or by play session, just so long as people couldn't quickly toggle while playing as that would be ripe for abuse.

That way we can all play together in the same shared universe. PvPers have no worries about attacking people who are not interested in PvP, those players would be flagged, and anyone open to PvP is easy to identify. If people still combat disconnect with such a system in place, then it can be taken they are the sort who only want to be on the winning side, and not willing to play fair, and can be safely reported via the in game report tool.

Can we perhaps move forward seeking a solution to these issues rather than sniping at each other?

who would steal an iPhone?

The issue the OP raised isn't whether PvP should be consensual, its that his definition of PvP. bullying weaker / newer players, isn't griefing.

Well that's a switch.
A PvPer griefed out of the game by non-pvpers who never opened fire.

Reverse griefosis?

don't worry I will kill an extra few tonight to make up for the loss, and unlike him or her i'll show no discretion about who* or what.

*unless they serve the empire.

And doesn't the mugger have a nagging doubt that that the 'muggee' might pick up a brick and make his brains come out of his ear ? That's where I get a bit hazy on this argument, a lot of PvP and piracy advocates take on righteous indignation as soon as anyone doesn't play their way, typically because 'they aren't playing the game' no, they aren't playing the PvP'ers game. What I am pretty sure of is that this will turn open mode into 'ghost town mode'. Anyway, happy Christmas all !

rofl my gawd this game is full of innocent simpletons.

"excuse me sir, i noticed that you are flying a lakon type 9 full of rare cargo, would you mind if I help myself to your cargo after i blow you apart? i would be ever so greatful. what no? oh well geez i guess i'll just have to find someone else to kill and steal from, have a nice day!"

And on the other side of the coin:
Excuse me Mr. pvper. I just spent the last 5 hours tediously mining in hopes to make enough to get a better refinery. Would you please blow me up as I return to base to cash out so you can feel all superior that you killed a civilian transport. I would be ever so tickled that my entire evenings effort was all for nothing and I have to start over tomorrow so another pvper can do it again. What's that you say? I should understand that its all in fun?
Maybe for you...

My gawd this game is full of ignorant simpletons.

Mhmm, this is the way I think it will go. Things continue as they are now. More and more new players and primarily PvE types will migrate either to solo or to one of the PvE only groups (the Mobius group being I think the largest of ANY group in game with nearly 2,000 members). As Open becomes less and less populated the griefer types will leave the game for pastures new with easier pickings. Now, the PvPers may be jumping up and down in delight at this as all the non-PvP types have gone... but I don't think that will be the case. Now the PvPers will start to get fewer and fewer as they either form their own groups (so that they can be sure of getting a fight) or leave the game for the same reason. Eventually, like survivors disembarking from an ark, the non-PvP types will return to the game as it was meant to be. Cue this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmDOBB8EYIA

One of you(pker) is playing by the rules and using the game in one of the ways that is designed to be used. The other(the trader) dont want to play by the rules established in the game mode that he has chosen to play and therefor feels like he has been griefed.

Don't mistake a griefer with a pker, a griefer usualy is on your team and shooting you in the back or opening doors for the enemy in a game mode that is more akin to a sport match with set rules where one can't roleplay or do whatever and must abid to the rules(battleground). A pker will kill you repeatedly or try to and he's doing nothing wrong.

I wish had this kinda information available it would make every kill that much more satisfying, i'll just have to imagine that i'm causing that kinda damage when i kill people.

Precisely why I reside in the Solo Realm.
With impunity, I can mine for hours on end and accrue my bounty in relative peace and serenity. I have no issues with either Pkers or griefers.
I do play by the rules established in this mirrored game mode.
no Pker shall ever get the chance to do anything right with this pilot.
With time this will be a growing trend as non-pvpers who hail such as griefing realize the option exists.. At which point the Pvpers can have at it with far less projected grievance regarding their chosen mode of play. And in a galaxy of 400 B, I would imagine it will get mighty lonely.

Spot on, if it isnt already.

The distribution of players across open and group/solo is a well kept secret ..

Soon enough the community will work it out, 'open play' is an agreement to become involved in pvp at your own peril.
Solo/group mode is where all the other types of playstyle will end up.

Grats to Mobius btw, his group is growing at a mighty rate and will eventually (imho) contain more players online at any moment than the entire 'open play' group.

I never thought of "open" as PvP mode until I started seeing all the posts saying Open= PvP

There should be three modes.
PvP
open
Group/solo

I put group and solo together because they are so close to the same thing.
In fact you don't even need solo, I could create a group and be the only member.

The very fact that people are using the term "PKer" scares me. I didnt realise ED was going to be so carebeary. I like PVE as much as anyone, but realise my ship is at risk whenever I undock in it. Thats why I fit guns and stuff.

But the thing that people have to remember is that while those in groups can hop from group to open whenever they want, those who remain in open do not have that luxury. The little fish have all gone for them, so what will they feed on?
