please don't confuse PvPers with griefers

Combat zones.
Pick a side, fight people who actually want to fight.

That's not an option to find anyone. There is no guarantee that you'll find someone to fight. Also, it is nowhere said in the game that combat zones are made for pvp.

You know what is the most easy way to find someone to fight? Supercruising in sol and interdicting random people. And as long as this is the most effective way to fight players, griefing will be present in the game.

Set up a PvP group and advertize it like the PvE and oldtimer groups that are already out there. There might already be one. The tricky part is getting enough players in the group that you might actually meet some. With Mobius PvE I have only seen one person in the last week and that group is fast approaching 2000 players.

The number of players is the real issue in open, not just the Mobius group. Players are free to move to solo or private groups, any behavior a player feels is griefing (no matter what it is) will make them more likely to move away from open.

This forum post isn't going to convince anyone who feels "griefed" to stay in open.

The game has 4 forms of PvP.
1) Attacking a player who is wanted,
2) Attacking a player for their cargo,
3) Attacking a player at a combat zone,
4) Attacking a player for none of the above reasons.

You might not like number 1, 2 or 3 but the game is set up for them to happen in the open game mode.
Number 4 is what the OP is talking about.

1, 2, and 3 are entirely acceptable and part of what the game is about and for which the reply "Don't like it then solo" is appropriate. There are two different types of people who fit in 4, those who just want a good fight (the OP sounds like he's mostly on that side) and those who just like bullying other players, the sort who finds it amusing to shoot their own teammates in a team game yet don't seem to grasp why they deserve being called jerks.

I don't have a problem with PvP.
Sometimes i'm out there looking for it.
Looking for the lucky guy attacking me. ;)

That's not up to the pvpers to make sure that pve players don't get hurt. You're basically asking pvpers to go out of their ways to solve a problem that isn't theirs
It's up to the game to ensure that finding people who want to fight is a better alternative than griefing. Right now it's not.

If there was a better way for players to fight against each other, pvp AND pve players would benefit from it.

Number 4 will get you more action (and so is more attractive) than 1,2 and 3 combined. That's the problem!

You mean all those games with storymodes?

Not especially, no. Though freeform sandboxes are not a particularly popular genre. I don't think they were in 1984 either actually.

Kerbal Space Program? Crusader Kings 2? Democracy 3? Evochron Mercenary? FTL? Mount & Blade?

Some of them have multiplayer but they are all primarily single player with multiplayer as an addon. Sometimes a kinda buggy, unreliable addon.

eh? have you been living under a rock or something?

The Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3 and NV, GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas.... Not to mention MineCraft - king of all sandboxs (now with actual sand!)

I'm sorry but all of those games have either a story mode OR an online mode.

You could always join one of the numerous pirate groups forming and fight amongst yourselves. But that's not what you folks really want is it? There's no fun in planned and coordinated fights, is there?

Where did I say I don't play storymodes?

It was implied with your condescending tone.
