Post Your Support for Elite Odyssey to have VR Support.

I love the game, but cutting out VR with future updates would make it a dead end for me. It used to be built "ground up" for VR, which inspired a lot of my loyalty--that and the great VR experience. That relationship has been shaken. Now the elite universe looks a lot less expansive and...well...that's too bad. Please, Frontier, commit to supporting VR in all future updates in whatever capacity you can. I'll stay loyal if you do. But I'm already walking, haven't played since the "no-VR" announcement, and just don't want to invest my time in it anymore unless we're going to be a part of the game going forward.

Well I know what I will be playing instead:

Wow, when I heard about this the other day and saw EA as the publisher, I wasn't gonna bother (loot boxes etc), but now I know it will have VR and HOTAS support, that is of definite consideration. Especially as ED is pretty much dead to me now...

VR support in 2020!??? Oi Frontier, are you seeing this!?

Hi,
As a measure of how many CMDRs woudl like to see VR Support in Elite Odyssey please post a +1, Yes or other positive affirmation here.
An easy way to gauge the community sentiment.
Yes, we don't know yea or nea, but at least we can start to gather some metrics and numbers.
I for one would love to see VR Support.
Thanks
Pete

I don't and have never used VR in anyway what so ever.
That said one day I would like to do so in ED, so I support VR and hope that the "not at launch" is not "not ever".
The optimist in me hopes they are meaning to implement it once the initial launch and inevitable technical glitches are out the way.
Some people are citing NMS as an example of space legs VR - they certainly did not have it at launch and we have no idea how long they worked on it.

Based on how they worded it. I believe Odyssey will eventually have VR support.

I do not own a VR unit but I do totally support this being supported by Frontier. They probably only have 4 or 5 people working on that. They had to pull their Galnet staff to work on Odyssey after all. So it became an all hands on deck project.

As for supporting Odyssey I still need to see more about what will be coming to the game with it for all portions of the game.

Right now, I am not interested in seeing a semi repeat of "Horizons for on foot expansion." Aka Here is planetary landings, and engineers to unlock but this time for ground warfare.

While I accept that technically, since they baked in VR support into the Cobra engine, there is no logical reason to remove it, I also see some ominous omens. If they remove VR support in the Oddessy update, I'm outta here, controllers and accounts on eBay.
I Can haz yurr schtuph?

Same here. It takes a lot to get to even consider ending my long EA boycott, no game has done this to date yet, but this is starting to look like a worthy successor to the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter games.

1.29% of steam users have some sort of VR headset as of April this year. That's pretty firmly in the backwoods beyond niche territory.

VR is currently where mobile phones were :

I'll think about getting aboard when they are a little more developed.
Steam is not the whole picture. You forgot about Oculus. Maybe try it sometime on decent hardware.

I think you will still be able to play the old game, no?
It's not ideal, of course, but on the other hand I would really hate if devs were held back by having to implement VR.
Well, So long as you're alright, eh?

The problem is that there just isn't really a good way to make a standard 3rd/1st person shooter work with VR without designing it specifically as an exclusively VR experience. VR experiences of this sort by nature have a more slow-paced and deliberate feel than their pancake counterparts. A lot of experiences designed for VR would likely be quite slow and lacking in action for non-VR users.

Sometimes, it just works out that a game designed for pancake mode translates well to VR and vice versa. An example that immediately comes to mind is Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. It's easy to think just make it like that, but Hellblade only works as a direct VR port because it is by nature a slow paced game. It's focused more on atmospheric story telling than it is on gameplay. If the gameplay was more frenetic, a lot of people would have motion sickness and it would be a less immersive experience.

I'd prefer a poor VR implementation to no VR implementation. Just put it in with no motion controls.... just standard xbox controller fps controls is fine. No snap turning. I'm one of the fortunate few that does not suffer from any VR sickness whatsoever. I understand most people wouldn't be able to stomach this, so throw in a VR theatre mode for them. Yet, I can understand why the devs would choose not too put in half-baked VR support. Personally, I'm the type of person that would rather just not do something than to do it poorly, so I definitely understand the attitude. It's just awfully disappointing in this case.

Even if they went all in and did a full VR implementation with full motion controls and locomotion, it still would not be ideal. The whole switching from seated cockpit play to standing play represents a break in immersion. It's what's kept me from trying No Man's Sky in VR. I just can't wrap my head around how to seamlessly switch from cockpit to room-scale without having to take the HMD off and then physically remove the cockpit from the play area. Elite would have the same problem.

Honestly, Elite just doesn't need space legs. From the perspective of someone who plays ED exclusively in VR, there's no plausible scenario where space legs makes it a better VR game.

VR experiences of this sort by nature have a more slow-paced and deliberate feel than their pancake counterparts.

Meanwhile, I have a hard time imagining a Doom-style pace in the Elite setting, with players flitting around like fleas on some very, very stimulating substance.
Maybe that is what it will be, but it would feel rather "game-y".
...On the other hand, this is the developer that handed us a casino for tweaking the capabilities of our ships...

As it happens; I, like many other DK1 owners back at the time, did play through HL2, when it got experimental support for the early DK1 drivers, at its old-style run-as-fast-as-motorbike speed, with little hindrance from doing it in VR -- the only real problem with that one was when the screen freezes every time the action stops, to load another map section; That really hit you in the ductuli semicirculares. :p

As for Hellblade, I had to stop playing that game specifically because of becoming infuriated with its sluggish, unresponsive, and mind-of-its-own input and camera motion. I suffered through the walking/exposition parts, but then it got to combat, and Senua would "lock on" to an enemy, instead of just letting me freely look and focus wherever I want at any given time.
I don't know - I guess I just don't have patience for console/thumbpad nonsense... I'll watch through the story on Youtube some day, instead.

What would you class as decent VR hardware?

Much smaller and more comfortable, better support, better compatibility straight out of the box. Wireless would be good as well. We'll probably get all that another few versions down the line. Think 90's mobiles v iPhone.

It'll stay niche as long as it lacks ease of use and therefore mass appeal.
