I for one am looking forward to mulit crew & planetary landings as well as wondering around the station, it is also worth noting that this is something that was stated would be in the game within a year & not 3 to 5 years. So here is hoping it is sooner than later.

At no point have they ever said that all those things will be in the game within a year...that is frankly impossible. Even if Rockstar, Blizzard and Valve threw all their combined resources at it they still wouldn't be able to get all of that in to the game within one year.

What has been stated is this:

Planetary landings won't be a single thing. I think I've said before - it is what is down there that makes planetary landings compelling - and please remember all of this will be after first release of the game.

I imagine we will start with landings on airless moons. You would be able to see heavy industry, craters up close, and ultimately be able to deposit things on the surface (stash cargo or mining machines). Atmospheric worlds are a bigger challenge - whether rocky or gas giant in nature - and a key element there is the atmosphere. They should have rich cloudscapes with lightning, turbulence etc.

The biggest challenge is with what we call 'outdoor worlds'. I would want rich and varied vegetation, wildlife, and so on.

So 3-5 years for "cities" on planets that we can explore is probably a rather accurate estimate. Landing on planets/moon/asteroids without atmospheres is probably the first step that we might see at the end of this year.

They did say in 2013 that they expected landing on planets(and i understand that to first be limited to barren airless worlds like the moon, like the Newletter 29 explained) to be released within a year after release(barring isues). They did not give any specifics, nor was it about walking around in ships or stations.

That wasnt a promiss though. Although the expansions will be there at some point.
Note that they havent given the order in which the expansions will arrive. That might not be the first but that may be a tad optimistic to expect more than one expansion this year.

Just be patient we waited for almost 20 years for this game so a nother year or few month is no problem

I've seen this before. What puzzles me about this the is how the pricing will work? Will the planet landings be multiple paid expansions where pay again each time they roll out a new type of planet, or will they charge the full cost up front for all planet landings and you just have to wait for the cities?

There will be one paid expansion for planetary landings and one paid expansion for the first person module.

A lot of us have already paid in advance for them in beta. I personally don't think we'll hear anything on the expansion front until early next year. There's still a bunch of basic game mechanics missing that need to be in before they start work on the dlcs and most people are fine with that. We're looking for stuff from the ddf like expanded criminality system, smuggling, trade mechanics, passenger missions etc the list is quite large.

Hey FD, if there is to be a delay for the beta of 1.3 do you think you could throw us a few specifics about the new ships (Like hardpoints or planned price range) because I want to know if I should wait for the Diamondback or buy something else now?

Forgive me if this has been answered but to be honest I'm far too lazy to read 17 pages to see.

I know the beta has been delayed but are we going to get a warning when it's coming like say "1.3 beta incoming in 3 days" or are we going to wake up one day and it's there unannounced? :)

(Yes.. I have a reason for asking, re:- planning my free time more efficiently ;))

As much as I appreciate the delay for "quality purposes"; it will be full of bugs anyway....that's what beta are for :)

Either way is fine; take your time and hear people complain, or release earlier and hear people complain ;) Thanks for the efforts btw; I am not good at compliments.

We have no idea how they have planned to sell the expansions, but I'm pretty sure they will split up in way more than just two expansions to keep it manageable.

I'm somewhat suspicious that we'll hear about these expansions in some way during E3. I also expect the first one to be released at the end of the year.

Yes I know about the expansion passes I have one myself. However if they are truly going to roll out planet landings in a phased way with the "easy" ones first, this does bring up the quesiton of how to price that rollout. Maybe it will be "planet by planet" where you pay for each planet one by one, and you have to be a millionaire and wait til the real 3330 to buy them all ;)

To be serious though, what's pretty clear is that only very small areas of a planet could be custom designed, whilst most of it will have to be generated in some automatic way.

As regards not announcing anything till early next year, I think that depends on whether there is a secret team working in parallel on paid expansions, as mentioned in another thread. It would certainly seem to make some business sense to have some of the team working on something that's going to generate new sales from existing players, and bring new players in as well. We also have to keep in mind the capability of the development managers to control all those separate streams going on - there is probably a limit to their ability to manage things and make sure they don't diverge too much.

Well it is all conjecture at this point but I don't expect them to breaking down the expansions and pulling a bethesda "horse armor" on us :)

As I said there's so much basic functionality not in the game yet, the missions system is a place holder for a start and that's getting redone in 1.3 but I wouldn't expect it to be fully functional, expect a new place holderwaiting to be filled.

I see E3 for the xbox release tbh. I will be pleasantly surprised but a little worried if they talk about an expansion this year and depending on the state of the game I would rather they wait and take their time.

The normal release was a barebones sandbox with half the game mechanics missing and it still is tbh. There's pretty much zero pve content right now. Don't get me wrong I still love the game but I see expansions a long way off or people won't be happy.

Another quote from the article I linked to before:

Braben reiterated to us the company’s strategy of releasing both free and paid updates along the life of the game, saying that the big improvements since launch have all been free and that there are more free updates in store. But Frontier has never shied away from saying that there will be paid expansions as well.

They won't stop making free updates just because expansions are released.

Oh...and the free updates we have gotten so far is already quite a bit more than "horse armor". The paid expansions will obviously be quite a bit more than what we get for free. Would be hard to justify them otherwise, but that still doesn't mean that there will be just one "planetary landings expansion". I can easily envision three: Non-atmospheric world, worlds with atmosphere (gasgiants, "Mars", "Venus"...) and "Earthlike" worlds with wildlife. Each of them could still be major games on their own.

I personally hope that planet landing is like the main release. We start with it bare bones and they include free expansions to the paid expansion to include all the various different planets.
