I think this list is very clear of what you get purchasing Premium Beta:
• Immediate access to download a Single Player Combat build to develop your Sidewinder skills before the first Premium Beta build is released
• Automatic access all the Beta development stages
• Automatic access to all major downloadable expansion packs as they are released
• A download copy of the released game
The full Premium Beta will be available from 30th May, with access to the Single Player Combat build OUT NOW.

I think at this point it would be wise for FD to double efforts to hit deadline for B1 build as soon as possible.Alpha 1.2 would be a dead end. Why spend resources for it?

I don't see why it wouldn't. When you move into beta, you're supposed to be nearing, or at, a feature-complete state, after all.
...but the alpha 4 feature list includes stuff that may not be in the final game, certainly not in the state that they are in the alpha. So there are 'missions' in the alpha (a free for all dog fight, a two-sided dogfight, a miner protection mission in an asteroid belt and a capital ship defence mission) designed to enable dog fighting to test out that and multi-user access that will probably not be in the final game, at least in that state. So whether they are in the beta or not depends on what FD want us to test, and whether they think that having such stuff there will help round out the experience and the testing. I suspect they will be in, but there is no guarantee.
It might actually be that Alpha 4 is the same as Premium Beta just released several weeks earlier to Alpha backers.

You have every right to feel that way !! But I would like to remind you that in a market where demand dictates the rules obviously we (yes I’am alpha backer as well) are willing to pay to help test and play early for a fair amount of money. I don’t understand why everybody is so upset about me (us) spending our money ? Nobody forced me honestly! I did it voluntarily just because I love(ed) playing Elite back in the good old days!
It’s as simple as this, if you don’t like the price if it’s not worth it too you or if you cant effort it …. wait for the Retail version and pay €35,= ! But don’t complain to us in these forums !

But yeah, it makes sense to move to Premium Beta as soon as humanly possible instead of giving other old alpha build There's a list of known issues and what's been fixed in Alpha 1 which is what Prem Beta have access to right now, you can find it here - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11385
