Probably done with this game

Probably done? Can I probably have your stuff?

Seriously, what I see here is a list of gameplay elements that you don't personally like but from experience must know that other players do. Less of a critique of the game and more an acknowledgement that not everybody has the same relationship with it. It doesn't even qualify as a rage quit, because it's neither particularly ragey nor technically quitting.

I don't normally like playing the "Maybe ED isn't for you" card because it can sound dismissive and superior, but when you literally say 'In general I don't like the kind of games where "I have the freedom to decide what I want"' it's kinda hard not to go there. Freedom to decide what you want has been a staple of Elite, and many similar games in the genre it helped to spawn, for over 30 years. Even if what you want is just to drift through space for a while, looking at the pretty but ultimately meaningless galaxy. Even if what you want is to log out and do something else for a while. There's nothing wrong with that. Some people accept that. Others get frustrated because the game they love on one level is failing to engage them on others.

It's been said before, but I think one of ED's strengths is also one of its weaknesses. The visual and auditory presentation of the galaxy is utterly amazing. No longer bleeding-edge in terms of graphics -- there are arguably space games with better looking elements -- but in combination with its unique scale there's nothing to touch it at the moment. It presents this incredible vista from the biggest nebulae to the tiniest rocks on obscure moons, but then in relative terms it really only allows you to scratch the surface of what's on display (literally, if you're in an SRV). Some players see this as an advantage; a deeply immersive and imagination-triggering background against which the smaller-scale stuff takes place. Others see it as a problem; like being in the biggest and brightest toy store in the world but only being able to imagine the wonders on the shelves while you sit in the middle of the floor and repeatedly play with the same dozen Lego sets.

If you're in the first group, nothing in the OP seems like a negative. If you're in the second it must be frustrating, but there's nothing wrong with leaving the toy store and going somewhere else until another Lego set is added.

5) Engineering: a huge grind joke, that's it.

Not really - for me that's a never ending search for a perfect loadout. I already own a good Explorer-Anaconda and just got my Trade-Cutter. Both of them and offcourse my never rusting Python show me, how many options there are, just based on your decisions/priorities. First all my loadouts were "gimballed MCs, overcharged and incendiary/oversized". Later, after I was ganked and searched for a possibility to fight back better I got over turrets to mixed loadouts and over cannons to even fragment cannons. Now I even want to try out fixed weapons and started to do so.

A couple of days ago a 8A G5 reinforced prismatic of the Cutter was "brought to perfection" and the cannons were partly sacrificed to efficient instead of overcharged. Two days later I sacrificed the "hicap" on the shield to get all the cannons overcharged - a choice between 8 % more shield and 19% more firepover..... And all the last is - just a plan, not yet finished can be changed to something else. I'm flying the Cutter since only a week and have already changed from "flies like a brick, could be not the right ship" to "flies quite good with FA off" to "well I don't love the bridge of the Cutter as much as the bridge of the Anaconda. It's a little bit offset, not that bad as of the Python's one, but also not perfect". Could lead my either to Corvette or back to Anaconda, but must not...

Optimization and "what-if-trials" as never ending story. As PaxtonNet said, the repetitive nature of the game must be accepted. As soon as I notice that it starts being like a job and I'm burnt out, I switch to Enderal and kill some monsters and bandits :) two weeks later I come back to ED then.

Yeah I know that many of you are going to think "right, another complaint post, cya good luck" but I want to give my 2 cent as a normal player that basically is a nullity in this game.

I enjoyed this game, played so much and grinding as well and then I burnt myself, so I took a break before to return later, purchased a Phantom and falling in love again with ED. But afterwards my love started to fade again because I've found this game a little bit boring and then another break on it's way. This time many month passed without even updated it, so I've decided to return again by participating to the CG, helping to unlock a useless multi-cannon. Now FD said that the next CG is going to be in July, which means that "what I'm going to do in June?".

I know there are different game mode I should play but:

1) Exploration: What is a point for that? Jumping hundred of systems to get nowhere in a Galaxy just to scan a Water/Earth-like planet that probably is going to be scanned with few chances by another player, what will gives to me? Is that planet will be colonized? Is that planet will be mine? Will I be honored/priced for such achievement? No, just credit and if the Planet was first discovered by me, my name will be displayed on it (wow!!).

2) BGS: Why should I care about a minor faction instead of another one? For the name? I don't like their name. So why? I know that this is a MMO and interaction with other ppl is a must, but I don't want to talk in discord/skype/or any other software because if I want to be part of a Squadron having a voice interaction is necessary. Also I cannot create my own minor faction if my squadron is not composed by at least 10 ppl, so why should I care about BGS? (PowerPlay is even worst)

3) Thargoids: I know that the game is called Elite Dangerous, but is too Dangerous to fight Thargoids that spawning randomly (by FD willing) and also seems pointless to have them into the space. If aliens like them exist for real, do you think they will be limited to disrupt just Coriolis stations? Planets will be probably disintegrated or even colonized, but not into the ED bubble!

4) Conflicts Zone: Like above, I can probably afford Low or maybe Medium intensity CZ with my non-engineered ship, but if I want to do more (even like Pirate Lord hunting) I cannot, because I need to.....

5) Engineering: a huge grind joke, that's it.

6) Last but not least: Bounty, Mining, Trading - Good way to make credits that probably I will not use at all (after purchased all the ships I want)!

How many of you feel the same as above? I mean, this game has huge potentiality and nice immersion, a very good space sim, but that's about it. In general I don't like the kind of games where "I have the freedom to decide what I want", but even if a game is like that, I still have a meaning, a reason to play it. This game what reason gives to me? At the moment none. I'm just playing a holo-person without the ability to use the legs inside a ship flying into the space looking for something unspecific.

Sorry for the bunch of complaining, hopefully something new and really enjoyable will be implemented in this game soon (I trust you FD).

Take care!
1) Exploration is about seeing what's out there. If you don't want to see what's out there, you're not an explorer, just a tourist.
When I go exploring, I pick a destination, usually a nebula, to see what stuff I can find, or simply how it looks up close.
I also only ever fly away from the core, but plotting routes in sparsely populated areas is more fun and challenging than just chain jumping.

2) if you don't care about the BGS, then there's little point playing it.
Of you want a goal, join a Squadron, they usually have systems in need of maintenance or defence.

3) Thargoids are endgame content, and more or less require engineering and guardian tech. There's little point to them, unless you're interested in defending systems, again a squadron will want their systems defended.

4) Conflict zones are mostly for BGS players, and bored combat pilots.
I can safely run a high CZ in my exploration Krait Phantom, so engineering isn't a requirement, because my Phantom only has 300 armour and 400 shields. Lol
However, engineering does allow it to do 591m/s, and with 4 overcharged frags, kill even a Cutter without much more than a scratch, and still jump 55ly (with a guardian FSD booster), and carry a fuel scoop, and vehicle hanger, collection limpet controller and 20t of cargo space.

5) Engineering isn't as bad as people make out, and often gives you plenty of short and long term goals.
Unlocking some engineers are a pita, but actually gathering stuff for grades 1-4 is actually very easy, and plenty enough for PvE.

6) If you're not interested in money, then do the activities you find fun instead.

ED does require you to make your own goals in life, so if you don't want that, you'll struggle, but there's plenty there to keep you going for years.
I mean, getting in to PvP is basically a full time job now. So many ship, and loadouts to try, all require maximum engineering, and the rewards are some pretty epic battles, beyond anything PvE can throw at you. It doesn't pay well though.
But that's what mining is for. 😁

I can attribute wanting to play elite dangerous as another activity I like doing and in the same room to a basic human desire.. to head towards the black hole and keep retracting my hard points until I can take it anymore. I'm unsure how anyone can get fed up of elite dangerous..o7

You bought a game, it's not a game you enjoy, move along. We all have different tastes. I don't understand the desire to claim that taste is some kind of objective measure of success and failure.

1. Exploration.
I like the current exploration mechanic much better, but I would like some new mechanics exploration related added.
Just one example: Let us use a specialized scientific SRV to take samples of soil, rocks, organisms etc. Also add a Ship Launched Scientific vehicle (SLS) for the organics floating around in space.
Enable us to install a scientific lab module and hire a science officer to analyze these samples and then let us sell the data to science stations.
Stuff like this would make me feel like a real deep space explorer and scientist, and when we get access to atmospheric planets with life we can use the same mechanics to analyze the life down there.
Exploration needs more and it is not difficult to add more. I understand we have to wait for atmospheric planets, but a new mechanic like the above is not very difficult to implement.

2.BGS
I do not really play the BGS. I do not really care who rules what. I do like to increase my rep to get better missions and better pay-outs though.
I do believe FDev could do more with this. Why not let us earn discounts by improving our standing with local factions for example, or we might get access to stations that are forbidden terrain for others. Stuff like that always keeps me busy in other games.

3. Thargoids. I like them in the game. The limited interaction we have with them is because in general development is slow. I expect new stuff to be added eventually.

4. Conflict zones. They are fine, although some people have offered some good ideas to improve them in other threads .

5. Engineering. I wouldn't want to play the game without it anymore. I like the fact that ships abilities can change dramatically through engineering. I like the fact that there are countless options and combinations possible. Some knowledgable players on this forum and on youtube have given me numerous exciting ideas to try out. I love the engineer bases. I wish there was more stuff like that in the game.

6. The fact that you do not want to engage in these activities is your own choice. The fact that you choose to limit yourself has nothing to do with FDev.
Mining: I want planetary mining (give us a Mining SRV with a drill). I would have liked a Ship Launched Mining Utility (SLM) to be used for placing the charges on asteroids, for deepcore mining. I was very disappointed FDev did not think of this themselves. This would have also been fun for player multicrew.
Trading is fine. But I would not be opposed to refinements and enhancements.
Bounty hunting: Should be reworked. The kill warrant scanner should play a much more central role. I would like the requirement of bounty hunt licenses for professional bounty hunters. These should give us more privileges and better pay. I talked about this more in my proposals.

I think these are legitimate complaints. But I also think no game can be as fresh as new, years down the line. Every game can offer only so much gameplay options, game areas to traverse and missions/stories to complete. If you have bought every ship you wanted, chances are you have put a lot of time in this game. Probably more than most other games. But no game can last forever. I think it's perfectly fine that you get bored with it after so long. It's not necessarily the game's fault. Yes, I agree that Elite is not "deep" enough and it lacks a lot of things, but I feel no matter how many other features it had, after a while it would become repetitive anyway. Just like every other game out there. I can't name any entertainment product that is the same interesting experience after months, years, and potentially hundreds of hours in it. I don't think it's anyone's fault, really, it's just a natural process to get bored with everything after a while.

The scope we all envision to be the "perfect space game" is most probably humanly impossible to develop. Yes, even one single planet could feature more content in itself than the entire galaxy does right now. One single city can be more densely populated, more lively and more interesting than the 400 billion star systems. I agree. But it's just not possible to make such a game. Our very own galaxy (the real one) is like this! Trillions of planets with nothing on them. Our real Milky Way is "empty" in a way. What do we expect from this, honestly?

So while I agree with you in many ways, I've also come to accept the reality of this project. There are limits of what can be done, both technically and from a development standpoint. Could it be better? Surely. But again, no matter how much deeper the game would be, I think sooner or later one would get bored with it anyway. It's just how things are.

Elite dangerous is very much like a marriage. You will have your ups and downs. When there at the same time wink wink everything is great but things can become very stagnant and predictable but if you love that person the good times definitely outweigh the bad times. I suspect your having a hard time in your life. When things don't go well it can affect your game play. Just my thoughts. Or maybe ellie is not for you anymore

I have over 900 hours in the game. What have I been doing if not gameplay?

Just because the game experience ED offers its players isn't something you love doesn't mean there is no experience to be had. It just means the experience isn't aimed at someone like you.

There are two kind of people who don't like ED: The first type are what you would call 'well-adjusted adult humans'; they at some point conclude this is not the game for them, and they are off doing something else. Most of the people who don't like ED are like this, but you rarely hear them. The second type is... different. These fine folk cannot accept that it is just their opinion, and that others might have another. Some of then genuinely cannot grasp the concept of people having different opinions. Others refuse to accept some people have fun while they themselves have not. You see a few of the latter prowling around gaming forums, desperately trying to convince others they aren't having fun, there is no fun to be had and they will never have fun.

It is an interesting psychological phenomenon, but you're better off just smiling politely and backing off. :p

Probably done with this game
I've been thinking the same thing lately (that what is quoted, not the entire OP). Thing is, this is natural for most games. I recently finished ROTR, a story-driven game that also has various side-quests, and after finishing the story and most of the quests, I got to the point of thinking, "I'm probably done with this game." Another example closer to ED is ESO, which I came nowhere near finishing, but I realized that the "endgame" wasn't my cup of tea (I'd prefer a single-player version ESO, like Skyrim). So one day it hit me, "I'm probably done with this game.." and I uninstalled it because it's so HUGE.

The difference between most games and ED is the "taste it leaves in my mouth" now that I'm probably done with it. While I've had some great experiences playing this game, and yes, I've gotten my money's worth out of it, I'm not leaving on happy terms. My opinion of Frontier has dropped like a lead balloon since I first started playing, and all-in-all I'm disappointed...

ED reminds me of the TV series "LOST" and "The Last Ship", where it starts off amazing, then becomes a bit convoluted, and then the "ending" leaves me thinking, "I should have quit this two seasons ago." It's interesting how a bad ending often outweighs a good beginning. For me personally, this isn't just how the gameplay unfolds, but also Frontier's development of the game. When first released on PS4, it was wonderful, but with every update new bugs and half-baked features were introduced, eventually turning ED into a steaming pile of "the last season" of the aforementioned TV series.

I haven't given up hope entirely, otherwise I'd just hang out in the off-topic sections of this forum, but at the very least I'm probably done with this game and will wait until New Era before picking it up again. I've already moved it to my extra drive, which usually just sits in a drawer, so I guess "done" is relative.. Funny thing is that I've completely deleted finished games that left me with a way more positive "That was a great game!" vibe than ED currently leaves me with. 😞

I was drunk a few days ago, flying. Met a super nice dude at Dead Johnny's in SD, we winged up, found a spot he wanted to work and got to it. About 20 minutes in, my drunken wife busts into my studio and starts yelling at me about something, my mic open. After asking her to stop a few times I closed the game down and haven't played in about a week. Haven't even turned the bone on.

Shame and embarrassment have always taught me more than actual learning. I'm one of those guys.

After another week or two I'll play again. Maybe. Depends on how I feel about my ability to not ruin other people's good time. I have a lock on my studio door. I could have communicated with my wife better.

It's on me.

Ultimately I'll learn that it's the other players that make this game wonderous. My suggestion is to find other players that you respect, and treat them well - the rest will fall into place.
Here's a song to cheer you up:

Leaving when we are so close to finding Raxxla?
Well. Doing other stuff may be good for your health.
Check in sometimes to just get a feel for the development of the universe.
Happy vacation in real life!

When I take breaks, I don't open up a post about it. I take breaks from all sorts of things and I've never made a post about it on the relevant place or platform/forum.
Yet your here telling someone this lol! Retirement parties are still a thing.

I feel ya. I haven't played since January, my longest break ever. There's basically nothing going on with this game right now.
