∞ probes?

For some, the current ADS+system map IS fun "tho". If there was a universal truth of what is fun and what isn't it would be easy. This is not the case however so generally things are a case of comprimise.

See how it works?

Yeaj that was my point. It's difficult!. Last I looked tho this is a discussion forum we feedback what we want and FD make a call.
The difference here is some are trying to talk down to those who want something different or being otherwise derogatory. I (hope) I have not done this, if I have then call me on it and I will appologise.

I'm quite happy with infinite probes.

Ammo would be annoying if too low, and pointless if too high.

Keep it infinite, IMHO. .

As I suggested yesterday there could have been two version of the scanner. A cheap basic one with limited ammo (1000 for example) and the advanced one with unlimited probes.
Everyone happy. End of the story.

I can live with unlimited though but it's just a bit "meh"

Well I think the actual number of people complaining is relatively small. Often when people complain in this forum, they feel the need to argue with every single person who disagrees with them, so if you have 50 people for and one against, you end up with 100 posts evenly split "for and against", even though the true ratio is 50:1 "for".

Obviously I'm taking some poetic liberty to make a point, but the point remains ;)

The normal conflict scenario in the forums involves 3 parties at most:
pro, con, bystanders.

But here we have a discussion about a mechanic that, from FD's comments, involves 12 different gameplay-styles.
The more difference there is, the harder the change can become an universally well received entity.

As far as we know how probes work, it just is a new costume.
I have not yet seen any use for piracy, or other jobs i could imagine quite quickly.
That is the thing that bugs me most, asking whether the stream delivered the complete info
on what probes are now gonna do.

A bare bone in a gift wrap, still is a bare bone.

Whilst I am very happy with the probes being infinite. One avenue that might be interesting would be to make heat a factor and the probe launcher needs to cool down for a period of time after so many firings, making accuracy of more importance.

Err, I dont get it? What do prospector limpets do for me when in combat? What does chaff do for an explorer? What does an exploration drone do for a pirate?

Nothing, why should it?

At worst, use 1 kg of the ship's fuel to create a probe, mechanics similar to the 'Plasma Slug' special effect for railguns. This should mollify realists somewhat while still allowing the average starship to carry thousands of probes and let the simple act of fuel scooping replenish the supply.

Without making use of the engineers the amount of probes you can fire in rapid succession is 3, it can be increased with use of the engineers. (I can't remember if they said how long you would have to wait before being able to fire more probes again.)

I do find it slightly amusing that people can accept infinite probes but lose their heads over ship transfers and telepresence.

Probes are something that akin with limpets could have multiple uses.
Like scanning asteroid belts for miners to extort money from and such,
you know, after all they are a tool for exploration.
Piracy involves exploration of traderoutes, scouting, combat
and preparation.

Prospector limpets are like cargo cans in combat, and can create sensor clutter,
chaff well combat only but i can imagine some ways explorers can create sensor reflection
as "smoke signals" over range.

Not including combat exploration or other forms of it, leaves those jobs desiring attention.

Not to the bed wetting degree they did with ship transfer timers and telepresence.

Pretty sure I saw a fair few open letters/polls and boycotts being asked for when they originally pitched ship transfer.

Less people on and interested in Elite these days,
or maybe forum burn? ;)

Because having the ability to move a ship some 20k LY in a mater of seconds (from the bubble to colonia and vice versa) is the same as someone having ∞ probes. (And as i stated in an earlier post my main reason for wanting delayed was that delayed ship tranfer was going to be cheaper)

It was more and less said by the devs on the stream that infinite probes are for gameplay reasons.

I supposed it could be argued that ship transfer timers are also for gameplay reasons. More than once I've went to play another game while my space clock counts down :)

Its a mistake to think any specific game mechanism causes the bed wetting, the mechanics are just todays excuse. It'll be something different soon enough.
