PS4 - DualShock 4 Control Scheme

I tried putting a post when I noticed this in the Beta thread, its quite interesting, but I think its just got lost in the threadnoght. Very curious how this will play out and if FD have settled on the default PS4 control scheme yet.

Controls
  • Unhide bindable controls categories on console - the only category still hidden is the mouse bindings
  • Added in the Dualshock 4 to the control bindings, includes a normal and "with yaw" flavour

Is that suggesting the normal and alternate controls have been tweaked from the Xbox scheme? I think Yaw is part of the standard default control for normal and alternative on Xbox isn't it?

Very interested to see what the default DS4 controls are set up like.

If I'm not mistaken, the PS4 controller is supported by PC, so it might be an update for that.

Not 100% though.

My guessing too, but I would "assume" the default DS4 bindings on the PC will be what they are going to be on PS4 but I could be totally wrong. :):)

The DualShock 4 doesn't get recognised as a specific device on PC or OSX, just a generic controller. Saying that you may want to heavily tweak them anyway, but defaults would be nice.

Also note using EDProfiler is very handy on PC if you swap control schemes (I go between DS4 and HOTAS): http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/

On PC I use these bindings with my DS4, which may give an idea of how you can get most stuff bound:

Shoulders:
R2 - Primary fire
L2 - secondary fire
R1 - decrease thrust
L1 - increase thrust

Left stick - pitch + roll
right stick - yaw + thrusters up and down
L3 - boost
R3 - FA On/Off

d-pad (set different controls for landing, these do up/down left/right thrusters):
up - ENG
left - SYS
right - WEP
down - balance energy

face buttons and modifiers:

triangle - cycle weapons
+up - lights
+left - cargo rack
+right - silent running
+down - landing gear

circle - target
+up - highest threat
+left - cycle subsystems
+right - cycle next target
+down - next route

square - (don't recall)
+up - comms panel
+left - target panel
+right - system panel
+down - debug camera
+touchpad - galaxy map

X - zero throttle
+up - 75% throttle
+left - radar dec
+right - radar inc
+down - 50% throttle

touchpad - centre VR
options - game options menu
Menus I use d-pad to move about. x accept. circle cancel. triangle, square next/previous tab.

Hmmm, this is from memory, but I think that's about correct. Works pretty well, each face button has related controls, and you soon get used to it.

I use a DS4 on PC, interested to see what the default is if it's been added.

Pity the default windows driver for the ds4 doesn't support the touchpad thing or colour bar :(

What is this colour bar I keep hearing about?

The light bar can be programmed to change colour, I think its been tweaked on the PS4 Pro to be more visible at the top of the controller.

So is it just an aesthetic feature, like the LEDs on my keyboard?

I think its used for the interaction with the PS Camera too for location tracking and works with VR too. So not just aesthetic although on mine it is as I have no camera or VR.

Oh okay, fair enough. I'm a bit of a gamepad lover & I am thinking of buying one for my PC at some point.

I not used anything else for ED since I stopped using a DS3.

Just never been a HOTAS fan.

Same, and I'm saying this as an X52 owner.

The blunt truth for me is though, is that I am a far more competitive pilot in Elite when using a gamepad.

Surely PC master race is HOTAS only, I just can't see me buying HOTAS for one game, even if ED does support it.

I have an X52, but as already mentioned, I prefer gamepads.

While I am primarily a PC gamer now, I've been using gamepads for about 17 years prior to the day I got my graphics card, and mostly using gamepads on PC games after getting the card.

I even bought a Steam Controller just for TES III/IV, which on PC do not natively support gamepads. The Steam controller is a way around that limitation.

Do you have lateral thrusters bound?

You are the man to ask then, Vertical, Lateral Thrust and Yaw and Pitch/Roll, how do you do it on your Xbox (without an Elite Controller or do you use that on PC too?). I am jealous we don't have that on PS4. Now that is something I would invest it.

I got the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 on anticipation for the PS4 version of Elite, but TBH i'm struggling on PC with it, and much prefer using my DS4. Also tried it with PS4 War Thunder, and that was terrible... I had asked the Mrs for the Warthog, but she cheaped out, so i'm not sure if it's the slightly cheap quality of the HOTAS4 or the fact i'm just not used to them. Oh well.

As per post #4 I only bind vertical for normal flight, and all 6 for landing (gear down). In combat just thrusters up/down with FAoff seems fine, as you're mostly pitching, and i'm not a hardcore PvPer (did some with Adle's Armada, a PC newbie protector group based in Eravate, and the random encounters you get in Open).

Yeh I think I will try the stock DS4 controls to start which I am assuming of its like Xbox is Yaw/Pitch/Vertical Thrust anyway. Thanks. (Although the original post has odd working regarding Yaw so we shall see).

I'm not worried about the control config for PS4. I'm sure FDev has got a handle on it for the PS4 version. What I'm really curious about is what they'll use the touchpad button for.. Guessing off hand that a press of the touchpad will bring up the galaxy map... perhaps the touchscreen on the pad will help navigate the map like a mouse would minus the zoom. Or if the controllers motion controls are utilized for ship movement.. etc...
