PS4 - DualShock 4 Control Scheme

I'm guessing (hoping) the yaw, and maybe other flight controls, can be mapped to the motion control axis.

I have never found the DS4 motion controls to be that great to be honest. I guess we shall see, maybe it would work as Yaw actually and then thrust could be all on one stick. :)

I think by default motion controls are set to free look which I am not sure how I will take to if I am bobbing all over the place while trying to fly

From FAQ:

Will the DUALSHOCK®4 touch pad button be utilised at all?
Elite Dangerous supports the DUALSHOCK®4 controller in the following ways:

•Fast Headlook. Quickly track your enemies in the heat of combat with optional motion-based headlook controls powered by the DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller.

I'm not worried about the control config for PS4. I'm sure FDev has got a handle on it for the PS4 version. What I'm really curious about is what they'll use the touchpad button for.. Guessing off hand that a press of the touchpad will bring up the galaxy map... perhaps the touchscreen on the pad will help navigate the map like a mouse would minus the zoom. Or if the controllers motion controls are utilized for ship movement.. etc...

Yeh, I think it will be something like that, they also say the four corner "zones" will be customisable. I guess they could be used for non-critical stuff like cargo scoop, landing gear etc etc.

From FAQ:

•Touch Navigation. Explore Elite Dangerous’ map of the Milky Way with a swipe using touch pad button controls that make navigation fast and easy.
•Extra Control. Customize four additional touch pad button ‘hotkeys’ to suit your own play style.

Altho I love my elite controller, the dualshock will have more scope to customise the controls. I think the headlook will be brilliant for exploring, but maybe not as precise as wanted for combat, but I still have faith yet. Only one more day.... :)

I have had a quick look, but can't see it anywhere.

It is possible to connect up a DS4 to a PC.
Is there a recognised default DS4 button set-up?

I would hazard a guess that it'll be the starting configuration for PS4 users.

I got the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 on anticipation for the PS4 version of Elite, but TBH i'm struggling on PC with it, and much prefer using my DS4. Also tried it with PS4 War Thunder, and that was terrible... I had asked the Mrs for the Warthog, but she cheaped out, so i'm not sure if it's the slightly cheap quality of the HOTAS4 or the fact i'm just not used to them. Oh well.

I was planning to get the Thrustmaster 4 so I am really curious to know a bit more about this. You are using it on PC: with which game? And exactly what are you struggling with? Is it a matter of habit (like, it's more sensitive than you are used to) or there's something wrong with the hardware itself?

I also picked up the Thrustmaster for ED and to be honest, I think it'll just be steep learning curve to be able to use it effectively. I was ok when trying it out on war thunder but I think gimbled weapons and I will become very good friends.

Do you have lateral thrusters bound?

You are the man to ask then, Vertical, Lateral Thrust and Yaw and Pitch/Roll, how do you do it on your Xbox (without an Elite Controller or do you use that on PC too?). I am jealous we don't have that on PS4. Now that is something I would invest it.

Standard controller, I use the left stick click to activate "alternate flight controls". Basically means you switch the Yaw controls to left/right lateral.

I'm using it with Elite: Dangerous (PC).

Struggling: Partly muscle memory, all the bindings and button alts to map every command to not need the keyboard at all (I play ED in VR, so it's tricky to even find the keyboard); but the imprecision / differences of the hardware.

Given the reviews i'm guessing the hardware is fine for a cheaper HOTAS, but it's very different to a DS4.
While it's nice to set the throttle at a set point, it's fairly "loose" when slid, so finding the blue zone is not really any better than on the DS4 where I have 50% and 75% throttle set to a button (and 0%, with obviously incremental more/less too).
As using a throttle is meant to be a main advantage, it puts a general dampening on my enthusiasm. Maybe if you're FAoff-ing a lot more, perhaps then it is more useful?
I use FAoff for combat, but not landing or general flight, and i'm not incompetent: killed a lot of NPCs to get Elite combat rank.

Then there's the stick itself. The lack of rebound, compared to the short-throw of a DS4 stick means it's slower to execute tight direction changes, while arguably allowing fine adjustments better.
However there's little argument that KB&M gives the best results for fixed weapons, so if you're using gimballed anyway the different between HOTAS and DS4 is very marginal. DS4 stick wins here for gimbals IMO.

So you have a product that takes up a lot more physical space, is less precise for one control input, only arguably better in another, and has less buttons overall (on PC if you map share, options, PS button and touchpad to functions)... It's definitely "different" but I find it hard to say it's "better".

Lastly, and this is quite important too, you can't really have a cat co-pilot sitting on your lap with a HOTAS. This obviously es off an angry beast that has claws - CLAWS!

The HOTAS needs a small table to set on! Something like a dinner tray table at a couch. I play at a desk with a PC monitor. The joystick and throttle is GREAT more control and immersive having a flight like control in the game. I have the PC only Thrustmaster HOTAS. After learning Elite dangerous was coming to PS4 I had to buy the Thrustmaster 4 $69.95. I got it for Christmas to be ready for the release. The flight stick has a limited number of buttons so for some controls you will still need to to use the DS4. I wish keyboard bindings would work, but it seems that a keyboard will be for texting only from what i have read.

Becayse the flight t4's cord that connects the two controlers is short , one cannot mount them on chair arm rests. I mounted mine on a 3/4 x 10 x 30 inch of a finished board, shoulder width apart, and place it on top of my legs, recline the chair to my liking when playing.

Unless you 'customize' it and lengthen the cable between the throttle and stick. I don't recommend it unless you know what you are doing, but it can be done.

I agree, any two wired can be spliced. However, I've read that there are some 16 different color coded aluminum wires in dide that particular connection wire. Thus tgey are really really thin, and though possible, extremly hard to splice.

Precisely. I have enough issues splicing CAT-6 with those wires. I have the T.Flight hooked into my PC and I have also messed with it on Warthunder. I primarily have the two pieces locked together and rest it on my lap and it is not a major inconvenience but it would be perfect with maybe a 4 inch spacer between. I tried it resting on the couch to my right and left while sitting on the connector cable, but it wasn't comfortable, personally. Needed that little elevation on either side. Might try experimenting with different placements if this game ever comes out. :)

I've sorted mine for now using either my steering wheel stand or dinner lap tray lol :) my only slight concern is if I'm going to have to rebind all my controls if I switch back to ds4 or if it will bind separately for each device :/ fingers crossed but I doubt it will :(

I did built myself a foldable SimPit to solve the problem. It's made from a T.Flight + TFRPs + a PlaySeat Challenge
I'm almost done just waiting for some parts and Elite to arrive...

LOL really? Do we need these pics in every thread iadesdragon? This was actually a thread I started about DualShock! There are plenty of HOTAS threads but I guess not enough for this one to be hijacked too.

Discussion was how to optimaly place and fix the T.Flight so this is one good way to do it since the length of the cable is in deed very limited. And, as you might have learn in other Threads all discussion of playing with DS4 soon turns into discussions about T.Flight 4 instead...

There might he a reason...

Show me a single maned flying object on this planet that utilizes a DS4 as controll input :)
