PS4 - DualShock 4 Control Scheme

I'm with you brother! Let us unite against these HOTAS demons. The DS4 will provide!

Ive had chance to try the DS4 on PC with ED and it works great even without the PS4 customisation and scheme so really looking forward to it on PS4 with the extra functionality.

Yeh because everyone who plays Elite must use a HOTAS right? Some of us actually want to use the DS4 thanks.

HOTAS provide better handling of flight because unlike the DS4 which are digital control, the hotas in addition to having a larger stick, are analog.

I'm just a little in my thumb movements (not offense intended), i often find i have issues with fine motor targeting using the thumbsticks, so I am looking forward to the HOTAS but yeah - horses for courses i guess! You often see the Devs on the livestreams playing with gamepads so you know i guess it works fine. They've been bigging up the touchpad option but really how much play does that add i wonder???

Errr what are you talking about? The sticks on the DS4 are analogue... People do make up some weird stuff to suit their argument these days. :) (The analogue throttle of HOTAS will be useful but none of this is game breaking, and the buttons on the DS4 for PS4 are no longer analogue input).

I have no argument the HOTAS will be more immersive, it will feel like you are flying like flight sims of old, ive tried the DS4 and while I am a n00b the control on Elite is fine on the PC with a DS4 so I expect the PS4 will be fine. Having a HOTAS wont magically make you the best pilot in the galaxy, practice with any controller will be required.

Touchpad will give you mouse scroll in the galaxy map and 4 extra buttons in game (corners of the pad).

Touchpad could also potentially allow for FULL analog throttle control :)

And motion control headlook will be very nice until vr comes.

Gotta admit I did chuckle as the playstion pad has had analogue sticks since mid ps1!

The ds4 does still have a couple of analogue triggers as well as a motion sensor to complement the touchpad so I'm expecting a great experience tbh :)

The game plays great on the xbox controller (if a little fiddly for the first week or so) and is the preferred control method for a number of pc players so for me hotas is mainly for a new more immersive experience.

Plus I got it on offer ;)

Has anyone played a game that uses motion control for anything relatively accurate? I've only seen it used in a 'shake' capacity which of course doesn't need to be accurate. I really hope you can map this to something on the HOTAS, I am hoping I won't have to keep picking up the DS4 to do things!

That would be a pain in the A** i'm specifically concerned about head movement, wich is quit critical in ED. I tryed using mouse / touchpad together with Hotas on my Mac but that is like having one hand cut off...

In other forums/games people allready discussed fixing a DS4 to your forehead with tape as a solution :)

Is there something like "headlock on selected Target" on XBox?

I tried a ps3 flight game using the ds3 motion controls and it actually worked really well and accurately controlling the pitch and roll!
As for headlook on elite the pax clip didn't look great using it as ed didn't keep the controller still lol so was hard to judge tbh.

Hopefully it will activated using a toggle switch (default R3 on xbox) then you can use it when needed whilst still having access to the right thumbsticks for flight control :)

I think the DS4 triggers are no longer analogue. At least according to wiki. A backwards step it says but very few games supported it.

Yeh I am yet to be convinced on this myself. I'll see how it works. If it doesn't I won't use it.

Yeah you're right m8 :) just checked and Deffo digital although they must be pressure sensitive as I would of noticed on driving games.

I'm so gonna end up installing a racing game this weekend now lol ;)

Wiki again:

"Despite innovations, the controller has a few regressions from the DualShock 3. Pressure sensitivity has been removed from all buttons except L2 and R2. This is likely due to the fact that most games did not utilize these buttons as well as due to it not being used on competitors controllers (including Wii U and Xbox One)."

Thats a shame, as L2 and R2 will be triggers for weapons, would have been nice for the shoulder buttons to have retained pressure sensitivity for throttle. Ah well. :) As I say I have used a DS4 on PC Elite and it plays well imo. Practice makes perfect.

Saves me installing one lol cheers :) I prefer the xbox controller for driving games anyways ;)

With throttle I'd recommend 25% incremental control on a controller, four clicks up or down so it's easy to set throttle or get into the blue without looking at the display!

It looked ok to me on the livestream.
You could always strap it to your head while using the HOTAS ;)

I did get the HOTAS cheap myself but really only for when I can use it with psvr - i may stick with pad for a while to ease me in, or I might just go all in on faoff HOTAS from the get go, I'm really not sure yet.

That's totally the look I am going for. I already look like Lobot with the headphones so I can't look any sillier...

I'm thinking of waiting until PSVR launch TBH. I already have a third party headset which doesn't have a mic... but i don't want to upgrade then upgrade to PSVR soon after.
