PS4 Update 1.10 - Codename FAIL

At first, I thought things were better. I could use quality mode again without 8-bit textures! Frame-rates seemed to be improved. There were a couple of audio drops on my first final approach to a planet surface, but the SRV deployed and everything seemed groovy. Then I noticed the LODPOP horror! Graphical anomalies and weird shadows started to re-appear on planetary surfaces in low-orbit cruise. And somebody had wrapped me up in cling-film.

Really? And all this was whilst deep in the black...

When I reached Colonia and attempted to open a mission board, it was more than obvious that something was amiss. Then - on simply navigating the menu - I blue screened. I logged back on and it happened again (repeat x3). Once I had finally managed to offload my exploration data and complete my stack of 20 missions, I thought it were for the best if I just went back to exploring for a while.

But no!

See, one of my greatest pleasures while exploring used to be creating screenshots. Things just don't look quite right now - it's almost as if I'm playing the game on different hardware. Not to mention that while I was waiting for 1.10 to drop, I spent mucho tiempo with GT Sport β - now that's a game with a decent camera mode, probably the best I've ever used. Frontier, take note.

Overall, disappointing work chaps. Must try harder.

Oh. I thought the reason Mission Board takes ages to load and likes to crash the app was because of some connection or HW issue on my side.

@Old Duck
Not sure if sig, but I used to love Elite as well.

SpaceMachine, try contacting @Frontier_Help on twitter, tell them you are having lots of crashes and see if there is anything they can clear out in your game save. It helped me.

It's quite interesting that only certain folks are experiencing these issues repeatedly. I've been flying around the bubble in QUALITY mode with no issues since last update. Textures are fresh, headlock is fine, external camera looks good. Planets look fab - bit of lag sometimes in textures loading to be sure, but I can't be 100% sure that isn't my internet - its been a hectic week over here for us on social media so I expect the internet is experiencing heavier than normal load right now.

Honestly, I haven't really seen anything that you guys are referring to, which makes me wonder, and also feel disappointed for you that are experiencing the issues. Mission boards are terminally slow though and they didn't used to be - wonder whats causing that then?

I run Pro.

Interesting? I have a much better alternative. Unfortunately, I can't say it here...

That won't be your internet - textures, skymaps and stuff like that is generated locally on your PS4.

This will be due to the Frontier server and the suspect code running thereon.

After 2.4 the mission boards ran fine for me then after 2.4.01 it ran crap with 'unable to download full list' errors :( 02 ran ok but 03 struggled on the first day but got better.
04 was slow'ish on the first day but was fine the day after.

Been on xbox again tonight with no probs or slowdown :)

Maybe get a one X ;)

If Frontier gave owners of ED for PS4 a free transfer to the XBox, I might be tempted.. Considering what a buggy mess ED has become on the PS4, they might actually consider it on a case-by-case basis (if for no other reason than to make people like me go away).

Yeah, who am I kidding... It was a fun thought while it lasted ;)

Buggy mess on PS4? Not from where I'm sitting. Has always worked fine. Couple of crashes here and there but basically all good, and defo better in1.10

By interesting...I wonder it it isn't more console related? I don't know enough about the how, of how consoles work, to know but I see a lot of threads involving various external drives, re-boots, database rebuilds and so forth and I wonder if it isn't more the console that is the issue for space machine, old duck et al. than the game? Then of course you state that 'other games' run fine on the machine - but is that an apples with apples comparison I wonder too.

Sorry rambling nonsense with no real conclusion, just idle wonderings.

In the interest of science. Take a look at this thread. Goto an Asteroid base and see if you get the same. I am not as picky as Duck about the LOD thing. But the fact is it happens. If you can get a video the same as mine and Ducks but with no LOD pop on the scenery in the same location I'll shut up :)

I am trying to test this very theory. I've switched to my Alt character Jenny, in case something is corrupted in Duck's save data like it was for CMDR Labrunning. I also rebuilt my PS4 database today. If I were the only one having the problem, I'd swap out my SSD for the original PS4 HDD (it's in a drawer somewhere), but that's a drastic step to take in light that others are having the same problems, and my PS4 works fine except for ED. The fact that Frontier says it finally was able to reproduce these problems makes me think the core issue is in ED itself, but perhaps some PS4s are more susceptible.

It might even be something we don't know about, like Sony getting chips from multiple manufacturers. The iPhone 7 had this issue where some phones run faster than others, depending on which manufacturer made the chip. It's not something the public is normally even aware of.

And as Stormy said, some of us are a bit more fussy than others. My "baseline" is ED 2.3 - once 2.4 is equal or better than 2.3, I'll shut up and be happy. Actually, I'll probably shut up soon anyway ("Let it go, let it go!") but I won't be happy until ED looks and works at least as good as it used to.

And Frontier, I'll not be spending one more penny in your paint store until you fix these bugs - stick that in your wallet and smoke it ;)

Well, 1.10 for me is better than the previous couple of patches, I was seeing a lot of persistent low resolution textures before; now I only get low res textures for seconds until the high res ones swap in, and even that happens much more rarely than before.

Though I have to agree with Old Duck, I didn't notice any of those problems on 2.3. Thargoids ruining everything, eh?

Even with the bugs it's a ton better than the Mac version on my laptop. ;)

To be honest, I think the smoke is ruining it. FDev admitted (even though it wasn't in the patch notes), that they've been "playing" with fog effects in 2.4. Fog effects can be very demanding on a GPU, depending how they are implemented (especially volumetric fog). I'd much rather stations install proper ventilation, remove all the fog / smoke, and give us back our nice textures, geometry, and framerate. Why do ion drives create smoke in ED, anyways?

Smoke, what smoke, I've got no smoke except when I get close to a star. Interesting point, wonder how many other's like myself that don't have smoke and don't have the issue's you speak of. You might be on to something there, ole' friend.

Hi Cmdr
Since 1.10 i have the problem there is no difference between Quality and performance mode. I play on Pro in quality mode and theres no more wobbling of space around the ship by entrance to supercruise or hyperspace. Hyperspace although is less detailed. There is no Thrusterheatwobbling if you set the camera behind the ship.
I see no difference between the two modes in graphics quality.
Though i think there is although no difference between ps4 and ps4 pro.
Anyone else have this issue?
Ticket to Support is out.

Greetings Thion

Hi Thion

I too notice vary little, if any difference graphically when I switch from Performance to Quality. I just assumed it was my eyes deceiving me.
