PvP League Season 4

Hmmm, I think this version would appease Riverside's petty dogmatic crusade the get this thread moved to the section that time forgot.

I don't buckyball, but plenty do. Stuff gets advertised in people's sigs, occasional posts in 'what did you do today' threads.

Have a look at the Exploration sub-forum, check out the number of expeditions advertised there. Have a look at the number of participants and progress updates. Consider the amount of effort & organisation that goes into these events, then consider how much effort goes into the PvP sub-section, and the amount of traffic it gets. Threads like this would attract visitors to that section.

So instead of just complaining that a section doesn't get much traffic, you would actually be taking steps to improve the situation you describe.

Just taken a look at the rules and I'd like to applaud the competitors for agreeing a rule-set that bears at least some similarity to Open.

Season 1 was actually the only one to be fought 'bare knuckle', for the obvious reason that it was the only one that took place before the RNGineering cataclysm sunk most of the game balance overnight.

Seasons 2 and 3 were fought with extremely restrictive rule-sets banning all RNG and some silent running (S2) and all but one g1 module (S3).

Season 4 moves much closer back to bare knuckle. I completely understand and agree with the restrictions (on 6 x boosters, missile spam and heals/synth). Unfortunately 'no rules' would be a completely degraded spectacle, which is a tragic truth but Frontier seem reluctant to get their ailing game back into its prior good health.

The problem with going too much the other way (towards very restrictive rules) is that it emphasises skill but the skills become increasingly narrow (a bit like modern day fencing, in which the competitors are not permitted to step to the side or to 'score' by striking limbs, even though those are two essentials in killing, or not dying, with a sword) and hence the contest starts to become a thing of itself, rather than a test of who would actually be better at staying alive.

Hence I think that this S4 rule-set offers a good balance between realism and essential compromises. Applause to all concerned.

With FDev taking interest in the League, I feel that soon we might have a game and a league which requires no rules. Wouldnt that be amazing

Very cool to see the PvP League featuring so prominently in the Newsletter out just now, plus the FDev prizes.

(Come to think of it, I have a dim recollection that us Season 1 winners were actually told we would get a unique decal ... better part of three years on and still waiting ... but np, speaking as a LEP holder, I know how to wait...)

Any plans for a 1v1 comp?

It would be interesting to know who's the best of the best of the best, Sir....with honours!

Of course... PC only. No surprise there.

My guess would be that most of the collaborators play on PC. And he did say they would be willing to help console players organize their own tournament servers.

looking for a group. I have some skills and rather well fitted out ships. I don't mind dying either.

PM me with invites and group CV.

Thanks

Why no 1v1?

1v1s are usually purely based on builds, and it's traditional for the league to be a group Vs group fight, which means it will involve 1 wing at the least. 1v1s are basically rock paper scissors compared to wing fights which are much more complex and involve wing coordination and so on.

If people want a 1v1 tournament of sorts, we can probably organize one. Though I've got a feeling it would become very stale very fast.
