PVP piracy - Destroyed three trader ships over 4t of cargo... help me understand

So I was pirating at the Parun CG last night and had 6, or so, customers. My demands were: drop 4t (four!) of cargo. I've stated demands before opening fire (and waited for a response) and then repeatedly while firing at the target. I let players go if they dropped cargo even if they tried to run first (other pirates may not).

But: Some players chose to be destroyed rather than dropping 4t. They are in Open with the chance of piracy and when someone comes along with very reasonable demands they seem to prefer losing their ship over it??

Help me understand.... Why?

Don't worry about it. You're doing it right.

Whole don't negotiate with terrorists thing. That's their prerogative. If they like the rebuy screen over the contents of their cargo hold who are you to argue with their financial sensibilities?

The comms panel is not ideal because if you're looking down at your instruments you may not notice that you've been sent a text message. So it's entirely possible that upon being interdicted, your customers didn't see your hails and decided to make a run for it just in case. Once the fireworks start, the last thing I look at is my comms panel.

Two words: Panic

I've interdicted traders at CGs before and demanded they tell me a joke...it didn't even need to be a good one an two thirds ran or combat logged. Figure that one out.

Wish I had met you while I was trying open...

Wow! I'll bet a few of those commanders had to change their shorts! What could be more terrifying?

Don't question it, do your thing, keep it reasonable, and you're golden.

Maybe they would rather die even if running than roll over for a crook.

This is PVP I can respect in a game like Elite. Gentlemen pirates are what the game needs. Keeps the dangerous feel, without destroying immersion - or just flat annoying people.

As a person who runs a store, I can tell you that having something stolen from you is a slap in the face - it's a major insult. "THIS IS MINE AND THIS [individual] HAS NO RIGHT TO TAKE IT FROM ME!" It feels like when a school bully has the gall to walk up to you and and take your lunch money right in front of you.

As adults, we've learned not to let others trample all over us and have taught ourselves to never submit to bullies. While this instinctive behaviour mostly protects us, it can also get us into trouble when the odds are greatly against us.

For example, you frequently see news reports or video footage of shopkeepers fighting back against armed robbers trying to steal cigarettes or the contents of a cash register. Let's face it - it isn't worth risking getting killed over a few hundred dollars worth of stuff. Yet shopkeepers and even store employees keep putting their lives at risk, simply because they are instinctively doing whatever it takes to protect what's theirs.

In-game, the consequences are a lot less than real life, so it's no surprise that many choose to run and get destroyed rather than think about the odds - 100% chance of losing 4 tonnes of cargo is clearly better than 50% chance of losing a hundred tonnes. But the player's actions aren't because of a careful consideration of the situation, but an instinctive reaction to a perceived "insult".

After a while, the player may get in to the "mood" of things and realise that it's just a bit of virtual cargo, and playing along with the piracy makes the game more fun and immersive.

Or maybe it's just that NPC pirates are hilariously easy to outrun and that's what players are used to doing. ;)

Maybe stop calling them "customers" because many don't like playing these little euphemisms games.

For me, I would flee or fight too, logic wouldn't work. It's the principle of not giving in to bullies.

But I'll happily give you rep when not on my mobile for pirating rather than griefing and congratulate you if you gank me in game like that for playing a part that enhances my in game experience.

Carry on and just laugh at illogical fools like me who would take a rebuy over 4ts of whatever.

I'd rather loose half a billion Cr than dropping a single ton of biowaste for a pirate.

Would it help to think of it as dropping biowaste on a pirate rather that for one? Like a giant space pigeon with designs on fouling up my ships pirate faction paint job?
