Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

So let me get this straight. Your response, and you enjoyed it, was to see someone beaten for a video game. Their equipment destroyed or stolen from them. You participated in all this, then admit it proudly? Yep gankers are the sociopaths folks. Nothing at all like the upstanding players who admit to assault, kidnapping, vandalism and theft IRL in response to a video game.

Nope, I'm saying it happened, not that I specifically enjoyed those parts. There was some satisfaction in listening to them howl when they realised their network connection was dead. It was more about punishing buttnugget behaviour in a social setting. The larger events took considerable resources to organise and as an organiser, we'd ask such people to leave, after blocking their network access. They would be warned first. Few venues had the power requirements, which meant seats were in demand for actual players.

What other players did was after that beyond our/my control.

But nice to know that you think antisocial behaviour is just fine..

Yeah dude, you admitted to seeing someone tied to a pole, and their equipment sold off. You even say you bought something. Congratulations - you're actually a criminal. That's accessory to kidnapping and receiving stolen goods, at a minimum. And you post it here like you're making some sort of a point. Yikes.

The 4 officers that attended didn't see it that way. Some details I left out for dramatic reasons.. It was his own brother who tied him up. The auction was loud, boisterous and fake - no PC's were harmed in the effort. One of the cops was a gamer, none could be bothered with a non-violent incident between siblings.

And, yes, I am a criminal, but not for any of the events described here. I also have a fed security clearance.. Go figure.

There was a group that were doing what you suggested, I believe. They left the worst area to go 22,000ly to chase this one bloke. He suicided back to the Bubble and they've been fairly quiet since. You could ask why but they're rather allergic to questions.
I can't believe I never heard about that.

The Suicide commando is my new hero I shall build a minecraft monument in their honour.
In the meantime they are out in Colonia, trying to gank me every day, yesterday with 4 pilots in 3 systems, because I am in a squadron with Phisto.
I guess they will continue until 777 brings enough fuel for their (how many ?? 3??) Carriers to return to Deciat finally.

After a couple of months in the game I headed off on my first proper expedition and stopped off at Colonia: stayed there for a few months too, and NEVER saw another cmdr except for Ian Doncaster I think. Then the engineers update happened so I went back to the bubble. Now it's mayhem up there!! (All Phisto's fault :D)

Fleet carriers definitely enriched the Colonia region with players (y)

I mentioned this in another thread, but it also seems appropriate here..

Before online gaming was a big thing, LAN parties were a thing. Sometimes I'd have 10-20 stashed around the house, power and network cables all over the place... Sometimes I went to large, organised events.. One thing all LAN parties had in common? Gankers/griefers. Now, depending on the event, such players might simply find their MAC blocked from the network.. Others I've seen beaten. One guy, a real charmer, was tied to a pole so he could watch his hardware being auctioned off. Got a nice SB card for $5. I saw one guy get tossed out the door with his PC and 21" Sony CRT right behind him.. LAN parties were great, they were a legit social event, something that online gaming fails to be.

So, yeah, their was ganking at LAN parties, but it was considered antisocial and dealt with rapidly - and often painfully for the ganker. Now, in Elite, I have an option to deal with them, the block feature, which is just as effective as the old ways, but a lot less satisfying. Although seeing some of the reactions in here to mention of its use makes me reconsider the satisfaction level.

Seriously? That's sick stuff! Disgusting!

I mean, not playing with somebody who behaves badly, not inviting him to the next LAN party, even asking him to leave right now, perfectly fine. But the described behaviour of physical abuse and theft is amoral and criminal. While i was at plenty of LAN parties, i never experienced anything like that. (Yes, people were drunk, a monitor was knocked of a table, a computer once got destroyed by it's owner, etc... but everything was accidents, often with alcohol involved. )

Would one of the LAN parties have turned out like what you described, it would've been my last one. I would refuse to participate in anything like that.

Wasn't a regular thing, maybe once or twice a year, with the larger events being twice a month. Never happened at my place, none of the people I invited played that way. It depended on who the 'victim' was, most allowed the orgs to deal with it, a select few took it further - and there was that sibling incident, which wasn't at one of my events. Because they required preregistration, it was easy to ban someone from future events. Thinking about it a little more, over 3.5 years, I had 2 incidents at events I was on the org team for. None in the last 18 months or so. The team that did the other events probably had about the same, I wasn't at all of them.

Oh, and I think it's wildly amusing that most of you seem to have assumed I'm male.. rofl

I started in May. Right after making enough money to buy an exploration ship, I headed out to the void for exploring... I returned from Sag A and Colonia to the bubble to engineer my ship. I went to Deciat, in open... No gankers... At least I could not see any... I go to Farseer, no gankers... I try to land, and as soon as I approach the station, someone starts shooting at me and destroys me in a matter of seconds... I was ed off! Not to the point of being disgusted by this uncalled for act of violence, but I was annoyed... The reason I was annoyed was, that I did not see the ganker and I could not execute my carefully prepared plan to escape him and annoy him... 🤦‍♂️

So I did the engineer in Solo, just because I did not want to go through the hassle of respawning at far away stations while in the middle of collecting materials etc...

Then I decided to buy a fighter ship and decided to git gud to the point, that I could stand a slight chance against these highly skilled and engineered individuals. I'm in the process of learning how to fly the FDL, aim and survive a fight... Not an easy task, but this ganker gave me an exciting reason to play a different style for a while... I want my revenge... The gloves are slowly being taken off... 😉

Now question is, how do I find the ganker, once I'm ready to face him...

My experience was very similar: my first gank was after about 6 months in the game after I had done a long expedition and was starting to do the rounds of engineers. I was annoyed mainly because he ignored my comms (when interdicted I even managed to type "what do you want?" or similar), and then ignored my friend request. Some time later I got ganked at Shinny in my conda and was absolutely fuming because I hit the wrong button and wasted time trying to low wake. The ganker in question accepted my friend request and did offer a few tips. I have been ganked about 5 times in total in 1300 hour play time, almost all in open and with frequent visits to engineers - the only thing that irritates me is that NONE of the gankers initiated comms or friend requests.

Friend requests him and tell him you want revenge. He'll propably blow you out of the water but you've taken the first steps to git gud.

If you cant remember their name, if that is what you’re asking, go to the comms in your ship and tab across to history, it will have all the players you have met in there.
