Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

Lol. ..."the ganker community". Cows says the silliest of things.

I'll point out that the ganker community has no problem speaking for the PvE crowd. If you could see to you guys cleaning up your rhetorical room. I will endeavor to get a tidy up going ovr here.

The crux of the argument here appears to be that ganking is counter productive to engagement and conversation. Unfortunately for you guys this isn't actually true. Sure, on average the success rate that we strike up a conversation and make a friend is around 10%. When you apply that against the sheer scale of interactions gankers get, you end up with a vibrant and growing community. We spend most of our game time actively hunting for other CMDRs. And not just in the hot spots you think you know. The Galactic Gank Initiative discord has continually grown since it was originally created to host Distant Ganks 2. Dozens of individual groups have formed within that larger community. When hundreds of gankers are providing emergent experiences to thousands of players, across the entire world, we do successfully sustain and grow our communities. We do so at a rate that's virtually unequaled to any individual group just by sheer numbers. And it's great. Someone with the slightest hint of git gud attitude is openly embraced within our community - D'anque being one of our most vocal examples.

10% success rate isn't much to rave about. I wonder what the 'going to PG' percentage is?

I agree with this also. IMHO it would be better for the game if there were wholly separate PVP and PVE servers - sharing nothing, not BGS or PP or otherwise - and each Solo player had a universe all their own, totally disconnected from other players.

But, I understand such a statement can be wildly inflammatory. I'm not seeking to inflame anyone's tempers on the matter, that's just my "hot take" after 10 weeks in the game.
It technically is, but in gimped state with Solo mode. I still dream that true offline will come one day, but that's beyond my point. What me, and other players are suggesting is IMPROVING Open, because it's broken in more ways than one. Currently there's really no purose or reason to do anything, it's highly exploitable. Although It could really be made into amazing mode players wouldn't want to jump in any other, and with few very simple steps. It is very sad, however, that Fdev simply doesn't care about it.

No no..You misunderstand. I am replying specifically on your lack of motivation for gitting gud-which is fine. I was merely posing another option of perhaps just gitting away in game.

I think you misunderstood more; I mean to say that there are other things to git gud at than ganking. I work on gitting gud as some of those instead. :D

A new player here, about 6 weeks into my time in Elite. So apologies if this is repetitious, but it's something that's been on my mind.

I'd really like to have some dialogue with players who mainly play in Open, but who get angry / upset when they encounter the sort of "rogue commanders who have betrayed the Pilots Federation" described on the game's website, i.e. gankers and pirates.

Specifically, I'd like to ask: what kind of player interactions are you hoping to experience in Open, if not PVP combat? What are your expectations? Help me understand what you think Open is going to provide?

And most importantly, how often does it actually happen that you have a cooperative (non-PVP), spontaneous emergent experience in Open? Does that actually happen? I honestly don't know.

I've played mostly in Open, and found my group of in-game friends through being ganked. They've since gone on to be my mentors and help me learn the game, unlock engineers, etc. If I wasn't playing in Open, I wouldn't have met them, so I'm grateful I did. But my "introduction" came via interdiction and destruction. It turns out that was a very small price to pay to open a door to a huge amount of progression and expert guidance. I wasn't mad about it at the time, and I'm tremendously grateful now, once I realized just how complex and involved making positive progress in this game can be.

Accepting the friend request from the player with the crazy looking Holo-Me was the smartest thing I did in my first few hours in the game, as it turns out.

I don't think it happens that often, but on dozen or so occasions I have been sitting in a station refueling or whatnot, and someone types in the chat they need help with a wing mission (that is expiring soon or they just wanted help with). So I've helped people with that. I've also ran into a guy who was having trouble entering the blowhole / mail slot to a station, so I sent him a party invite and talked him through the controls and some tips. Ended up spending the rest of the day mentoring him.

So while it is rare, it does happen. Most of the friends I play the game with are people I've known for awhile through other games, etc. There's only one person who I originally met through the game, and he role-played as a pirate. Straight up interdicted me and then sent me a message saying, "Arrrghhhh give me 20 tons of that booty matey or I'll blow you to bits" or something like that. I couldn't stop laughing. And of course I didn't give him jack. So we fought for awhile and he was using a tactic I've never seen in PVP before. I can't remember exactly what he was doing, but I think he had his ship in stealth mode so I couldn't lock targeting onto him (he wasn't using heat sinks). I only had one fixed weapon on my ship, so I wasn't able to do much damage. I ended up sending him a party invite and we've become pretty good friends. So it does happen.

I hope that's not true but if it is, it explains the silence.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret the Ganker Community doesn't want you to know. Keep it to yourself though, it is very secret.

Your average ganker isn't part of the Ganker Community either.

Despite what some may claim, the entry bar to logging in for an hour to make Asps go pop for kicks and giggles isn't really that high, and there is no requirement for a membership card either. These forums are not representative of the player base; your average cmdr is wholly unaware of all the purple-haired drama. Some prefer PvE, some pew at hollow icons but in the end most people just log-in, have some fun, then move on to other parts of their life.

Nowhere did I disagree with that so no misunderstanding. I never mentioned git gud just git away (see you don't have to engage if you bounce out-in game).

Oh, ok. Cos that looks to me like you were replying to me specifically about my lack of motivation to git gud.....

what are you talking about dude?

Wait - so you do think it's OK to engage in "not agreed upon ahead of time" PVP?

I have been okay with that since december 14th 2014. There are weapons on your ship, there is a trigger on your stick. Your fingers, your choice. I'm not going to police the fingers of 200,000 cmdrs, I'm just gonna make sure my fingers make sure none of that negatively impacts my little Adder.

By the way, 3k+ replies, and thread going almost for month in the top proves that forum PVP is best PVP! :ROFLMAO:

Only wish community in-game would be at least distantly THAT active, eh?

yeah well, there hasn't been a good Hotel California in quite a while and talking about mining income got boring eventually. I am sure this topic will keep us busy until FD makes some kind of announcement about EDO that we are very [insert emotion] about.

Cos that looks to me like you were replying to me specifically about my lack of motivation to git gud.....
I am saying you can just GET AWAY from gankers in the game (waking out). You don't have to GIT GUD (you must have missed the WHICH IS FINE part). That is the option. Then you can focus on GITting GUD at mining or whatever your fancy is.
I hope that clears it up for you.
