Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

Well I am both. Sometimes I gank and most of the time I fight against players I have no hope to beat.
And I'm not alone, there are many others like me.

I give you no justification for ganking. Its just fun to play as the bad guy is all. There are things I try to achieve through my ganking sure, but it's not a justification. Just to be clear.

Thank you.

As for those, like yourself, who both gank and want competitive fights, you can be applauded for the latter while being laughed at for the former :p

True gankers don't look for opponents, they look for victims. Show up with a ship that is obviously not fit for any fight, heck, a default sidewinder or maybe a non-upgraded eagle, and they can't resist. Tales are spun how this is somehow to the victims benefit, for them to "learn" and get "immersion delivered" to them.
In reality I gifted the game so several friends who played for quite a few hours only to have that progress lost in what they thought was a safe system by someone who had no interest in their cargo nor made any demands. Said friends never touched the game again.

One can believe whatever one wants, including that people who essentially play the equivalent of a mass murderer on a killing rampage in a space game provides some kind of value to other players.
This does not change the fact that this drives away players, especially new and new-ish ones. At the very least, it drives them away from open and into private groups or solo.
And it also does not alter the reality that you can gank people simply because the ramnifications to ganking are nonexistent because the AI law enforcement is ill equipped to effectively pursue and take down a guy who drives a tank through town because all they have is .38 specials and any special police force or the army and national guard don't exist.

Yep, I have achieved notoriety 10 in the past, which is the highest possible, after killing a load of NPC cops. I was still able to go about my business as the interdictions can easily be fought against NPCs. Frontier just doesn’t dare address this issue. If the ATR can down your shields in seconds with their special beam laser why can’t they have an enhanced interdictor module??

if there was some kind of PvP content that could keep me busy fighting consenting players, I would probably never gank again.

You know what I'm going to say to that- so I won't bore you :D

But its a problem of FDs own making....the game generates skilled combat pilots who hone killing machines and then provides nothing else for them to do. PvP hubs are fine, but at some point you want structured features beyond 1:1 fights (or at least I do).

Me too, and I suspect we are in good company. I’m sure competitive pvp is fun and I enjoy it against friends in a more relaxed manner, but winning is more fun than losing and I’ll never git good enough to hold my own against a half decent pvp pilot, so I need something different. We have yet to find out what odyssey will bring, but I’m not expecting much.

I couldn't agree more.

I mean, if you had a Star Wars Squadrons style game just with your own ships you design, where you can set your own objectives and be as cruel and vindictive as you want (the more the better) in a nearly self contained feature.....thats good for the game, surely? All that money flowing to EA for those MP fights could have flowed to FD for next to nothing. People complain about CG logging- well, why not make part of the game truly hardcore so everyone gets a game pitched at them....

Unfortunately there is a small but very determined group of people on the forums who see such a feature as detrimental to their way of playing.

This is what I find crazy really in all my time here. Even arguing for scaled challenge in PvE is seen as wrapping puppies in tin foil and cooking them for dinner.
The problem is that a well thought out proposal for a specific aspect of pvp gets included in the ‘let’s force everyone into open’ bucket, and there are indeed some ‘open only’ campaigners, who you can point your finger at.

I just hope FD sat down and thought these issues through, rather than gluing legs and arms onto a Condor SLF and expecting it to be popular.

Well thing is that there is subset of players who don't like combat. For them game is not a combat simulator, and they do not do combatty things. For them added "challenge" is adding more the stuff they don't like to the game.

And you perfectly illustrate how people get blinded by the word 'challenge'. A scaled challenge is not changing what they experience, but adding on extremes at the top where its needed, right now ED just plateaus far too early.

yeah, but RN is talking about things like optional missions/scenarios that the noncombat players don't have to participate in. I've seen people get mad about threat 7 pirate signals for being "too hard". The same thing happened to wing assassination missions.

"waaaah I can't steamroll it solo in a big ship, nerf it"

Perhaps for somebodies, but there are challenges available. Take that wing assassination mission withhout wing. Or poke your nose to thargoid's businesses, without friends. OK probably those gitgud pilots who are really gud can pull those stunts.

They already do- thats the problem, because they are not a challenge that works synergistically with the game. Most replies are 'use a lower ship'....why? Why negate a giant part of the game that you work for and instead provide for it instead?

someone in AXI solo'd a hydra in an icourier not long ago. It's just a shame that the only challenges left seem to involve "play the regular content with an arm tied behind your back".

This is actually the problem. Wing assassination missions used to be my jam and I would stack as many as I could and tackle them by myself but then they nerfed em and now they are a cake walk.
A few months ago I did a few wing assassination missions and completed them all, by myself, in a Phantom and never even came close to losing my shields.
This game really needs end game pve content. I would love nothing more than to have some kind of missions that require a full wing of fully engineered Vettes to complete.
Right now, Thargoids are the only thing that has any kind of challenge but I can't use my engineered weapons and I have to grind for mats for premium synth to do it, which is extremely lame.
