As with any ship, it isn't like it can't be set up to do a job. But anything it can do, another ship does better. It has no role that would make you say "well I am gonna pick up an Asp S to do this job because it's the best choice".
If anyone likes it then I am 100% pleased FD didn't bring in a ship that may as well have been left on the development whiteboard, because character/personal preference is just about the only thing it has going for it.
Actually, I was thinking this specifically because of its hardpoint placements. The two smalls are so close together they may as well be one. It's also very maneuverable and has a respectable jump range. I happen to have opted for the VM4 in that role, but I can see the AspS doing an exemplary job, especially as it is quite maneuverable so can keep targets in its dumbfire sights even when they are slippery (various skimmers). The maneuverability also means it would have a reasonable chance against defensive ships on some of the surface stations. The build I had been considering was this:
