A few more tips to survive open:
Apart from watching some of the excellent YT videos on the subject, especially the ones made by some of the bad boys, always carry a huge shield and a point defense in open. The PD will avoid the engineered thingies that drop your shields in the blink of an eye, and the shields buy you time to keep your head straight. It's heavy and power hungry, but in open it's worth it, at least until you get better.
Fit missles Edit: Sorry torpedos that is, with "Reverberating Cascade". Gankers often hate those, cause "OP"
. Likewise learn how to flip your ship 180 degrees (quickly), so that you fly as fast as possible in reverse. First of all it gives you a better view when you dump the biowaste (make a binding for that), secondly some gankers become like a 5 year old with their toys taken away, because they say the "reverski" isn't fair. Well it probably wasn't you that pulled them out of super cruise.
Be sure you have Report Crimes Against Me turned on. That way at least the ganker will get notorious if they manage to blow you up. Also remember that you can't die in the game. Just lose your ship if you forgot to carry at least one rebuy. If you want to PvP against somebody that invites you, it is considered code of conduct, to switch it off.
Block the jerks. It's controversial if you ask a ganker, but everybody else seem to think it's fair enough.
Use solo if you just want to go and stare at the pretties. Once your at the outskirts of the bubble, your chances of meeting anyone but RNGesus are slim to none anyhow. If you stupidly seek the excitement, and I do understand why some, including yours truly would do that, just relog to open before arriving at Sag A* etc.
Start getting friendly with the engineers. The grind is more fun if you're new to the game, and we "all" get there sooner or later. The game as such misses a story, but unlocking engineers is kind of a story and getting some of the guardian modules will enhance your spaceship considerably.
Stay safe and good luck. There's tons of fun awaiting you
And remember that rebuy.
