Really large landable planets: the list. (MK II)

Nice, did it look like that from orbit, did you try landing in one of those red craters?

It did look like that from orbit, unfortunately I decided not to make a landing attempt at that time. With the gravity at 2.67 G's and my exploration ship not being outfitted with the best of thrusters, I didn't want to tempt fate. But it's not really that far out of the bubble so if I find myself out that direction again, I'll have to make another stop.

Because of this all of our large planets, without exception, are icy bodies and surface gravity rarely gets over around 4g....
@varonica actually if you go to the OP and look at the Google Doc, you will see that there is a 22,440.19KM radius Rocky Ice World with a gravity of 4.93G.
And even more interesting is the 1 High Metal Content World with a radius of 21,596.94KM radius with a gravity of 7.11G!

I'll take a look later. It's in EDDiscovery which reports to EDSM, so I'll see what I can do to link to it.

So I just went back to 1 of the large landables that I myself found wayyyy back in the day. Far enough back that while it had EDSM data, it didn't have all of the data that EDSM can grab after all the latest patches to Elite.

So I go back to grab the rest of the data, FSS the system and realize that there's 2 other bodies I never scanned. I scan them and 1 is a Water World, and the other is....ANOTHER LARGE LANDABLE!

Granted, this is the smallest large landable on the list at only 118,216.93KM, I figured I'd put it on here anyways since it's in the same system as a 20,000KM one. So if you've got a planet at least 18,000KM in radius, it'll definitely be accepted.

Hm, I think the Mods can move Threads without breaking anything, at least that was possible in the past. Worth a shot maybe.
Anyway, I'll continue to have a look around and will come back should I stumble over a large one again :)

We actually tried and they were able to move the thread, but I was no longer able to edit the OP. So we moved it back so that I could continue to update the OP. Oh well, the thread's still kicking! You snagged 27th and 40th place btw!

Yep, exactly. For instance the first planet you posted has a mass of 24 Earth masses and a radius of 19,203 km. Earth's radius is 6,378 km. So if the planet had the same radius of 6,378 km but still had the 24 earth masses, then it'd be 24G gravity. But since all of that mass is stretched out to 19,203 km, the planet is less dense, therefore gravity lower than one would initially expect. Fascinating stuff though!

Interestingly its orbit is extremely eccentric, at 0.9208. At periapsis it's practically rubbing against its star, which has got to cause some of the ice to sublimate...
I might come back in a few months to see what it's like at periapsis.
Nice find! You took 88th place with that one. I'd be interested to see a screenshot from the Orrery in the system map if you're able to get one.

Really large bodies are all icy, there seems to be some limitation to the max mass a non-gas giant can have in the stellar forge, so rocky and metallic bodies which are dense make up all our really high grav bodies due to the gravitational gradient, icy bodies make up all our really large bodies due to lower density with similar mass. I'm pretty sure there is a formula you could use to calculate radius or gravity by just entering density and mass, it's not that they don't correlate, they do, you just have to look at the correct indicators.
