Reason to use T9 over Cutter for Trade

Thanks guys. While I've only using my Type 9 for mining, I really do like how it flies. Perhaps I've just been unlucky, but I seem to get interdicted a LOT whenever I do trading. Certainly lately, my unarmed Cutter has been hassled a lot, but it's just so easy to get away. In a Type 9 I might have struggled as I'm a little out of practice.

I too would LOVE to see the Panther Clipper in-game, 2,500 Tonnes capacity unshielded, right? Can dock a couple of Crew flown Sidewinders / Eagles...

I have never lost an interdiction attempt by an NPC in my Type-9. It is maxed for cargo space and not even optimized for performance by the thrusters (Gr-3 Clean drive + stripped down effect).

It is so cheap that there's really not much consequence to losing it. Mostly it's the time to haul the goods, really not much more. No docking computer on board. I exchange cargo racks for pax cabins and run damaged-station rescue missions too. It's fun (my #1 priority). I certainly don't exclude the notion that it could be more fun in another ship Panther Clipper.

Interested in people's thoughts on this. An excuse to buy and outfit a second Type 9, purely for cargo hauling, would keep me occupied the rest of the weekend no doubt lol.
I much prefer the Imperial Cutter, as I waste less time (it is much faster in and out of stations and has more cargo capacity), can take on serial interdicting NPCs during missions and get engineering materials. As noted before avoiding interdictions by NPCs is possible without fail in a T9 with some practice, but a Cutter also lets me better escape gankers, griefers and PC pirates at Community Goals. A Cutter probably also attracts more PC adversaries, which can add to the gameplay.
I prefer the T9 over the Cutter when its only 2-3 jumps because of the ability to boost towards a station. You can fly the T9 very aggressively. The Cutter will drift past the station on boosting. Thats my only reason.
I almost always boost towards the station with an Imperial Cutter, exception is on community goals and when I drop in more or less frontal from the mail slot.
If I don't boost I tend to request docking too early without noticing, and end up trespassing.
A cutter's shield makes for highly efficient brakes, but becoming tangled with the wings in the grille can be an issue.
I am not yet good with the camera suite to react properly. I'd love to have some side and rear mirrors or a huge field of vision like in real life.
It is so cheap that there's really not much consequence to losing it.
Some consequences are very welcome. But I'd really grind for discounted Reactive Armors, 8A Thrusters and 8A Power Plants.

I only run precious metals in my Cutter, so that feels “in theme” enough for me. Here in Illinois drug runners used to take exotic sports cars, black out everything, and then do late night smuggling runs on the interstate with night vision goggles.

my mat black Cutter is my drug-lambo

Get your eye in again and the T-9 is just as safe as anything else against npc interdictions. Tonight I've evaded a Viper and a Cobra in mine; it's been literally years since something managed to get it.

Hey all,

I'm doing some trading in my "Cargo Cutter", but was wondering if there's any reason, other than cost, to use a Type 9 instead. While the Type 9 can ultimately haul more cargo of course the Cutter is far more likely to get it there. It's faster - being able to outrun most ships that could potentially hurt it - and can be shielded enough, even in a smaller slot, that ships that can catch it, can't real deal sufficient DPS before it jumps away.

The Type 9 on the other hand is a slow, large target. It could have decent enough shields, but that would compromised the cargo capacity. On "safe" routes, it'd likely be fine, but due to how the game seems to magically make enemies appear, rather than having any logical way they could have "found" you, well, the Cutter remains the better option.

I've used a Type for Mining in the past to great effect, but it only very rarely got hassled. I've not really thought much about this, just pondering how I'm using this luxury barge as a truck, rather than the game's "ultimate" truck as a truck...

In the end it comes to down personal preference.

The Type-9 is a viable ship, but you will struggle in certain areas compared to the Cutter. mostly when it comes to surviving combat situations, as here Cutter have several things in favour of it compared to the Type-9
*Superior Speed
*Superior Firepower
*Super Shields

So for most CMDR's, the Cutter is the better ship, once it have been unlocked, and yet, the Type-9 is nice ship to fly from time to time if you feel the Cutter is boring/safe ship to fly.

I always haul in my Type 9, rather than the Cutter. It just feels more like a hauler should feel, I guess.

Mine hauls 756T and can easily fight off any pirate that randomly interdicts me (PVE). It has tough shields and a full set of weapons. I prefer to fight back rather than run away.

The Cutter is my flashy miner these days.

I've used a type 9 for trading up until now as it feels faster due to how relatively quick it is to get it on the landing pad. Do people that use the cutter find they're doing better in cargo/min?

I think it's a valid factor that you don't have to grind the Rep for a T-9, especially when Elite is not your main game. Once you've got the money, you can buy a T-9 and you're good to go.

I own three Cutters myself: one for mining (512t), one for cargo hauling (720t) and one is a Pier Queen (I bought her on a discount, but haven't figured out what to do with her and I will probably wait until FDev have fixed engineering before doing anything). The handling of the Cutter while mining is okay. Not as nimble as my mining-Python (duh!), but she gets the job done. For cargo hauling: Well, for such mundane tasks I use supercruise assist and auto-dock anyway ;)

I usually don't bother with interdictions anymore. I submit, boost and jump away as soon as the FSD is ready. My Prismatics can easily absorb anything that might fly in my direction, but I might as well fly shieldless (Mobius PvE/Solo, mind you). The only annoying thing are chain interdictions when the same NPC interdicts you several times in a row (and always just right before you were about to reach the station )

In the end I believe it's more of a question of fluff and "roleplay" if you prefer the T-9 or the Cutter. I sort-of-roleplay as an Imperial citizen, so I take the Cutter because of decadence and style. In other games a Cutter-design would be an endgame Yacht or passenger transport (funnily enough, I think the Cutter's description explicitly says it's supposed to be a luxury yacht, but it sadly doesn't work that way ingame). In Elite I use the Cutter to mine ore and haul fuel for my carrier. Yes, it does look like a spacefaring love toy, but at least it's golden and has some spoilers ;)

t9 here, no weapons and 520T cargo. Been indicted by an fdl it failed, cobra mk3 failed. i don't own a cutter so i cant compare the difference .just completed a wing mission in T9 of 2323 tonnes of metal without a wingman (lv8 threat). But i usually just alternate between routes. no more that two attempts per route before i alternate over.

it slow yes, it turns like a 1942 tank, but it my tank:)

engineer helps. grade 3 fsd drives. :)
alloys bulk with g4 heavy amour modifications.
