Reddit info is not very promising can FDEV shed light on it

They told us so themselves :

So yes, they are selling an unfinished and undefined product at a fixed price.

Yes. They are. The game will be unfinished for 10 years and hopefully not even then so yes it will be unfinished.

Yes it is undefined... to us. They haven't told us exactly what will be released over the next year. Doesn't mean they don't know.

Now we've agreed with that can you stop harping on about it? Either buy it now or wait for more info when it comes out. They don't have to tell you everything and they won't... yes that might effect immediate sales as some people will chose to wait but that is what they have decided.

You aren't getting a definite roadmap. Live with it. Either wait till it's out or don't. Either way just give it a break...

Again..... you just admitted what they are selling us is unfinished and undefined...so why argue with what he is saying? It's okay to be okay with this and want to support FD but don't try and say he is wrong when clearly you admit he is not because it is equally okay not to be okay with this.

I was referring to the new season/expansion, not the core game as it was released.
And sorry, but I can't help it - them trying to grab money on a teaser and some promises (as so many companies) bothers me.
Sorry if it's noisy.

Ah so you admit it's not built yet thus "unfinished" and you also admit they haven't told us all of what season two entails so again "undefined"... I don't see why your arguing this point?

I ask myself the same question. But that wasn't the spirit of what the other poster was saying. Suggesting that Frontier hasn't even figured out what they are doing (for atmospheric landings)...or at least that is how I percieved it...could be wrong.

This all goes back to Frontier's love of secrecy. If they just told us all the details, even if they couldn't delliver all of it...folks would stop assuming that they haven't figured it out.

Somehow the post I with me explicity agreeing he was right get's attacked for saying he was wrong.

You sir win 1 internet. Well done.

Attack dog level 11.

People are just bashing, and that is fine.

I know, when I get home today, I'm going to play Elite Dangerous and have fun.

To be fair it is true of the core game and the expansion. Sorry to go off at you... you just got the backlash from every dipstick's post I've read today.

I'm happy to give them money on a teaser and some promises as so far they have done right by me. Others differ and will wait to see if they fulfill them. I just don't understand what talking about it achieves. Everyone buy it or don't. End of story really.

That would sure be a start and ease some minds.

Yeah, it has been a common refrain of mine since Gamma dropped. If only the told us more. I'm still unconvinced that the tight lips policy has worked out better than if they were more open like CIG.

To be fair though, CIG has gotten plenty of flak for not meeting goals they've been pretty open about...so, it goes both ways.

I can totally understand that, but you also condone this kind of behaviour from video game companies by doing so - FD's intentions might be all heart and goodness, but it's still a shady marketing method that is becoming the norm
(in my opinion at least).

If they told us what they planned and something changed or was delayed imagine he wailing and gnashing of teeth that would ensue. If I was them I wouldn't tell us anything either.

Heh, I'll take the blame for them doing that! :D I've been begging them to stop telling us what they're planning/doing and to start putting stuff into the galaxy for us to discover, without telling us about it.

I want us to find things in space through exploration and discovery rather than from reading press releases!

So, yeah, my bad, it's a shame it interferes with making a good sales pitch, but I'm unrepentantly going to keep on asking for some features to be kept secret :p :)
So this is all your fault. Darn.. ;)

I must say I'm mostly on Halèks side here though. It's all vaguely undefined, unfinished, coming soon or later-ish bunch of promises and it's hard to justify buying it.
Personally, I preordered the base game. Got a lot of fun and still playing. But at the same time, there are also many decisions made I don't agree with and the major one is development priority.
It feels like they don't care about the base game anymore. Everything seems to be focused on content to bring in more players who have different ideas of what an Elite game should be.
-
Having said that, maybe it's best if we all cooled down a little (me including).
Don't pre-order just yet if you're wary of what they will deliver
Time will tell and maybe we'll see some more details later on.

One thing about the planetary landings though.. I've also seen what nms can do.
It's extremely complex if we're talking about the same level of detail.
But it's also true that everything in that game looks exactly the same and I doubt it will offer more than 50% of the gameplay E-D does at this moment.
If there's anything we can say about Frontier, it's that they try to make the game visually as realistic as possible (or at least within the boundaries of reasonable development cycles).
So yeah.. let's just see with what they come up with and decide later.

Fair enough... that I get. I wouldn't have entertained the idea of the kickstarter for any other game. As far as I'm concerned that worked out rather well as I'm loving the game and FD have certainly bought enough goodwill from me. I wouldn't send money to another company unless the teasers and promises were really really good :D

Honestly, why even make video games at all...

The customers (us) are simply reprehensible.

:D

It might be my background with software dev that makes me more forgiving of missed deadlines. As a sometimes PM, I've learned that complete transperancy works out much better than being mum when dealing with stakeholders.

If I can tell a client that XX feature we talked about is going to hit a speed bump in the next iteration at least I have time to prepare myself and them for the fallout.

I don't know, as a modder I never meet my deadlines and stay open about it. People usually understand and don't spam as many angry questions in my experience - but we're not at the same scale either. ^^

Airless rocks are "easier" to generate fractally - concentrating on the terrain realism, bounding geometry and structure placement. No good having structures if they float in the air because the terrain won't let them place properly. Same if your ship or scarab vanishes into the mesh as the surfaces are not defined cleanly.

AI is also needed for the various things that have been mentioned - we need AI for ground units, AI for air units, structure systems, bits and pieces of whatever these things are going to be made out of, and gameplay reasons for them to exist.

Once all that background work is done (and it's a huge task! broken AI will kill a game stone dead) and they have a functioning surface model - it's then a relatively simple (but still very complex) task to add atmospheric effects. Now you've got rocks with atmospheres and structures. Cities and flora/fauna are going to be very difficult - they can be procedurally generated, but at the 1:1 scale of Elite it's a frightening prospect - wish them all the best of luck!

Stop talking sense Mr or Mrs Asp Explorer, you'll scare the locals!

You're expecting the user base on this forum to be reasonable. Experience says that is not where the sensible bets would go...

I know the vast majority are very reasonable but damn there's an annoyingly loud minority out there!

This is pretty much true no matter the scale. I've worked on multi-million dollar software for a large number of end users and missed deadlines are way easier to gain sympathy for than trying to justify further development w/o a shared plan.

First, reddit just sketched out several things:

1) what kind of planets there will be - rock, metallic, icey
2) detailed how buggy will work
3) how bases - which will be a thing to look for and find - will work
4) different classes of baggies

It is all about *first* update.

Second one is looting and crafting. Second one in Horizons. Got it?
