Rift hdmi port users

I am still not seeing any difference between HDMI and using the DP cable adaptor, very annoying !

Are you guys who are seeing the difference running 1080 series cards?

I am sitting on the darkside of the Farseer inc planet right now, it certainly is not black. When I quit the game and re log in, the planet is black for a few seconds, then all of a sudden it is as if someone turns a big light on and lights up the surface :)

cheers

i am running a 970. And as i said earlier, when you are on the surface, there is ambient light, that slightly brightens the scene. The deep black can only be seen, before entering orbital cruise.

Sorry I meant I am a few hundred KMs above the planet, not in orbital cruise but normal flight. Anyway I will stop annoying you all with my rants and just enjoy the game now :)

Hey, i always help out, when i can... I did not mean to sound offensive. Maybe its the Titan X driver... Then i will share your problem soon ;)

No offence taken, I appreciate your suggestions :)

I have come to the conclusion I am already getting the full range, which at least would explain why I don't see a difference. I see what you mean about the planets now, if I approach a planet on the dark side it is indeed pitch black, only when entering orbital flight do things light up a bit.

I think the only logical conclusion is for you to get a Titan X and re-test ;)

Need two or three months to stock up my 1080 money to be able to afford a Titan X, but the time will come soon :)

I would be really grateful if anyone who IS seeing a difference with the adapter, and has Bigscreen (free on Steam) or Virtual Desktop - would you mind looking at this image while in the Rift:

It is a full range test image, if you have full range you will see 4 boxes, if not only 2. I am seeing 4 when using HDMI, or via the DP adapter.

I would live to know if you get 2 boxes when using HDMI.

Thanks :)

I see four boxes on my monitor (DP) and on the rift (HDMI). Asus 980 ti STRIX OC GPU. Have a DP adapter arriving today so can re-test but now wondering if I will see a difference. What GPU are you using?

Thanks - I have tested on a 1080 FE and Titan X (Pascal) and see no difference with the adapter, and can see all 4 boxes in the Rift with HDMI direct.

Something I have tried (got that adaptor on order) is to switch the Output Dynamic Range (within the NVidia Control Panel, Change Resolution) from Limited to Full. This adds a little bit to the top and bottom ends of the colour depth, and does make a difference.

DP adapter arrived, not sure what I think, maybe the blacks are a little darker than with HDMI...? No difference to your colour image. Can still see all four. I already had Nvidia dynamic range set to full.

Well I just tried this as my adaptor arrived today. I was expecting it to be quite hard to discern the difference but it really is an overall improvement. I tried my Rift for a little bit first on the HDMI port before swapping over just to be sure I noticed anything.

Well I've just done a trade run for an hour in ED to test things out and my initial impressions are that there just seems to be more clarity to the image overall. You notice more detail and it just feels a little bit more well defined. In Elite I also felt that the god ray effect, whilst still noticeable, was good deal more subdued and a lot less in your face noticeable. Colours and contrast did feel better and more vibrant. Also tried some of the Dream Deck samples too and the one with the TRex coming down the hallway was noticeably better. Usually I get a bit of glare and distortion when I look at the skull on the pedestal to the right, but did not using the display port adaptor, it just felt more stable with no noticeable shift in the verticals when I turn my head from left to right.

So thanks for the heads up on that OP. Nice one!

I can't run BigScreen (no Win 7 support), however, I did jump back and forth between HDMI and DP several times at Full Dynamic Range and there is a noticeable difference although often slight. Stars are slightly richer. A little more detail and color in Nebula and galaxy map . Darker on the back side of planets. A little blacker blacks. I can see how some may not see it as we all perceive color differently. Also, I am running a GTX 980 and perhaps the 1080 has a better color palette and the effect is not as pronounced, if visible at all.

sam75 also has a Titan card setup and sees no effect. I suggest, you take his test picture from this thread and test, if you can see all the boxes well separated or not. If not, i would try using an adapter.

After a bit more playing and switching backwards and forwards there is a small but noticeable improvement in the range of colours which shows up as extra detail in the background star field. I think the inside of stations also looks less washed out. Worth £7 considering the cost of the GPU and Rift needed for VR! :)
