Good. Sony doesn't get to play the Too Expensive Card after they told people to "go get a second job" in order to afford a Playstation 3...

I get the impression from your postings on this subject that you seem to be almost pushing the Rift as some sort of fair deal to justify your own planned purchase of it to yourself, which you do not need to do.
Add me to the list of those wanting a budget, bare-bones version. Use off-the-shelf parts and make it large and uncomfortable, as long as it's $400 or under.
We have different definitions of ballpark.
Since you think that the Vive "should" sell for $800 to $1000, yes, I think they "should" sell it less than that.
Shipping to Australia $132 - not even sure if that is AUD or US - this is just daylight robbery. If the Occulus site is in USD then the total is over $1100 AUD. I can't do it.
I understand that. I was making it known that I would pay $400 or less for a headset that was made with off-the-shelf parts to keep costs down.off the shelf parts? There are no off the shelf parts in these VR sets, these are the first commercial versions.
Yes I do.Do you, or anyone else, really think that anyone at OR is actually worried about the whining about the price?
Default Rift Higher Price than Expected? $600
I don't see how the Vive can be cheaper. For one, many thousands upon thousands of people are buying a Rift, even at that price point. Also, the Vive isn't going to be cheaper with an additional front facing camera and all that hyped-up software nonsense.
If people are expecting a $300 Vive, I think they're in for a nasty surprise.
VR isn't going to be a commodity priced item until it's ubiquitous - we're not even into the first iteration of consumer hardware yet. It's implausible to think that within 3 months they'll be dirt cheap.
Plus, it's owned by facebook. I dropped my facebook account about a year after it initially launched, because I could tell pimple-faced zuckerberg had nothing but dollar signs in his eyes. The man doesn't do a single damn thing that doesn't scream self-interest.
I can afford the Rift, and I WANT to experience VR very, very badly. But I'd rather buy a $700 Vive than a $100 Rift from Facebook.
Price gouge.Hype it up, call it new normal, market price, expect people to ignore crazy price for new tech.
<snip>
They are probably lumping in the R&D+marketing costs into the final price of the unit, rather than treating them as capex/investment costs which would drive the price down. I'd be interested to see the teardown costs to see what the component cost is vs retail.
I don't doubt it's subsidised in some way, but how they derive the final cost price, they then add margin on is perhaps a core question.
End customer perception seems to be it's too expensive, that's a hard thing to combat, especially when perception often over-rules reality
If I can get $600 for my used DK2, then that at least will pay for the Rift, but something tells me I would need to find a fool who doesn't know about the Rift being in pre-order to pull that off.![]()
