Rift Higher Price than Expected? $600

The good thing is you can probably get 4 bills for it and you have had the pleasure of using it for over a year now so all that fun for free right? I am going to sell mine then step away while this thing works itself out.

Unlike others I will wait till May to see what happens because by then you might wait an extra week to get it. Signing up with them right now just seems silly and has no meaning in fact does nothing to light a fire under their bum to get some support for the games that matter. Eve Valkryie has not even updated its 2 year old trailer so the game is probably as lame as the trailer and the cute little fox game well, no not for me so really nothing appeals to me here in this offer and my PC is more than ready for this to happen. A real shame the way things have progressed.

..aaaannnd still no guarantee Oculus will work with ed. I'm sure it may eventually; only time will tell.

On another note, I'd be more OK if it came with the touch controllers. I'm not saying I necessarily want those, but they're better than another Xbox controller I don't need.

The rationale behind shipping with the Xbone controller is to provide a consistent control interface for developers to target. Presumably they went for this particular controller because they're produced in such volume that they cost virtually nothing, especially if they've negotiated for them at cost. As Palmer Luckey has stated, if you don't need the controller feel free to sell it on at an effective profit.

After shipping($65 are you kidding me or am I just spoiled by amazon) to Canada it comes to $915. That makes it a no go for me, I will be happy with the dk2. $915 for a headset without the Oculus touch? Seems crazy after I only paid $415 after shipping for the dk2.

Makes me wonder how much they could save on the extras if they offered a headset only package. Nice case, xbone controller, 2 games, headphones and a mic. Adds up quick. And seriously a mic? They are trying to be like a console it seems like.

I'll be interested to see how much the vive comes in at, as it is a complete vr package. The lighthouse system and motion controllers included make that a far more compelling package, if it comes in at $1000. A full room entertainment item for $1000? Sounds about right.

I understand that, and I saw that statement from him too. For some reason it irritated me seeing that comment from him about the controller. I'd still rather have the option of not having it, than more stuff to sit and collect dust. And no, I don't have the time to "sell it for a profit". That, to me, was stupid for him to say.

Regardless, it still doesn't mean the Oculus will work on elite.

I was about to hit go on it but that price.... <ahem> it. I can wait.

They said about $350! also, 600usd !=700 euros! They truly can go bleep themselves at that price point.

<sadface> <frustrated> <feels betrayed>

Yeah, that's a ridiculous price D:

I was thinking about inquiring on behalf of my workplace on how much a rift headset alone is. No way they are going to sell it to businesses in that package. What use does say, an MD looking at CT scans, have for an xbone controller and games.

Didn't realise they didn't charge your card until dispatch, tempted to pre-order now and follow your cunning plan :)

i'd go carefully if it was me, and keep a real close eye on things, as it is just an 'expected shipping date' if they decide to up production based on order volume, and then ship early, you may end up loosing the option to cancel, and being out of pocket.. just a thought.

i wouldn't put it past some companies to start of setting extended dates, as a precaution. but then decide to short ship with no advance notification and catch out folk they know will be placing 'hedge orders'

anyone feel stupid for passing up the DK2 in favor of waiting for the CV1? sorry..don't mean to to be mean but I remember quite a few posts where folks were saying how stupid it was to spend $350 on a dev kit...A dev kit that's darn near the specs of the CV1.

I bought a dk2 for 400.00 Canadian, have it for sale at the same price(comes with leap motion).
Was going to put it towards a 970, and then buy the CV1 later. Now, I am thinking I may
keep the DK2 and still get a 970.

I've posted this before, that my DK2 able to run smoothly @1.5 ss/ultra settings would make me a happy camper. the price of the CV1 together with the price of the PC upgrades needed to really enjoy VR is way beyond the price to get a DK2 performing at peak, especially when you consider that the DK2 will get the benefits of ORT 1.0 and gameworks vr. I've never been so happy with a purchase as I am with the DK2, all things considered.

I just checked the UK price of £499

That includes the UK VAT @20%, so it is ~ £415.83 excl VAT, or ~ $608.50 (at current exchange rate). So not much difference in price really.

I have not pre-ordered one, I am waiting for the vive.
It doesn't help that it is about $100 more expensive than I was expecting.

Out of curiosity I decided to try the Oculus compatibility tool, even though I know my computer is above spec. To my surprise, my computer (kind of) failed. It was under the USB 3.0 extensible host controller, of which mine is Via (this seems to be an issue many people are contending with for several host controllers). I have a dk2, and haven't had any issues, though that doesn't mean that there wouldn't be with the cv1.

The recommendations by Oculus are to buy an expansion card, which isn't horrible, but it's another $25-30 to spend. Their other recommendations are to find a computer that can use Oculus, or buy a new computer.

I guess i'm not too phased by the price to be honest, so I went ahead and pre-ordered.

The DK2 was over $500 AUD when I purchased it, so for another $200+ you're getting the completed version plus launch titles and a controller. If you've spent over $500 on a good monitor before then it's probably a little easier to be reserved about it perhaps.

The compatibility tool tells me that my venerable old 3570k doesn't meet specifications, which is not exactly unexpected.

Move to CV1 for me would thus need a new CPU and motherboard and RAM to keep within spec, and it's a good while until I next invoice :(

Urgh - I was going to pull the trigger on some new kit but I'd really better not, at least until I get the Vive requirements.

Just put my name down for one shipping is June so loads of options and time but at least I'm standing in line will see how the March delivery goes and reports. Still love my dk2 so still get my fix

I just tried that compatibility tool.

GPU failed as expected (HD 7950 3GBDDR5 OC), but also it says the AMD FX8350 also doesn't meet their spec (I doubt this will make a huge difference, but I will try it first and upgrade later if I have to).
I expect the Vive will have almost identical requirements to the rift.

My plan is to get a VR HMD (Vive unless it ends up being > £800) then get a new graphics card around the same time or a soon after. (I would like to get next gen 14/16nm Fosfet cards with HBM 2.0, unless their release date is too far in the future, or my current GPU really can't handle VR on low settings)

I guess the one thing about the Oculus price is it gives a rough idea what the ballpark price will be for the competitor products. (Better start saving/raid savings/cash in shares/sell kidney/etc.)

I got congrats I am ready but not biting going to wait for Vive would rather pony up additional 200 for that than have the unexpected happen
