Right what the hell is wrong with the controls?

Right so on the third attempt it did allow me to dock even though I was lined up perfectly on all the other attempts as well. Now I have a new problem. I bought 4 units of cotton from the first station and was gonna take them to ibootes to sell. So I left the station, locked onto ibootes and engaged the hyperdrive. The hypedrive charged up and then it asked me to align to my destination which seemed a bit odd but I started to look round and could not see anything that would indicate the direction I needed to turn to. So long story short my ship then blew up and I lost my cargo.

Seriously either I am really stupid or this game could really do with an in depth tutorial explaining all this stuff.

Use the compass (top right of scanner) to align with locked system: small blip = behind you, large blip = in front.

Once you are locked to a destination, your compass thingie to the top right of the 3d scanner shows your destination point. It's also highlighted on the main screen.

You are generating heat when the engine is ready to hyperspace, and if you don't line it up in time, you'll cook yourself :(

Select destination, align ship, engage hyperdrive, throttle up.

Right I'll try that later, really should be explained somewhere though. In lots of detail.

Yea I already have that but at no point in there does it say that you need to charge up your drive and then align to the correct star by using your compass and then throttle up, it just doesn't say that and it really needs to.

EDIT: Ok maybe it does

Frameshift Drive will charge
.

Once Frameshift
Drive is charged, align with destination target and throttle up to initiate jump
.
o
ATTENTION! Navigation Compass update to show locked destination.

Upon arrival at new system ship will slow to super cruise
.

As is often the case with work in progress things. Some might argue that it would be difficult to document a game that is still so early in development but I disagree. The documents contents would merely change as the games content changes. And making a start on it now, and continuously updating it avoids that "Oh crap! Now we have to document all this stuff we've been working on for 18 months!" moment.

Yea, I have read all your comments and I agree with them.

When I first started this thread I was confused with the game, I couldn't figured out the controls (or the controls were not doing what I expected them to do) and I figured I must be setting the game up wrong. Within the first two posts I then realized that the game was designed this way, totally different from any of the space sim games that I have played in the past (and as I mentioned, I have played a lot of them) and I couldn't understand why anyone would do this.
Also it was getting late and I was tired and then I ended up arguing with people instead of what I should have done which is to learn how people play the game and not keep up pretending it was just the wrong way to do things.
So for that I apologize, I never meant to cause any offense to anyone and I will attempt to learn how to fly in Elite as I've been waiting too long for the game to just give up after an hour.

Cool :) well said. Takes a bigger man to admit his mistakes. Keep at it and it will come.

That's a good point, If I hadn't woke up today in a much better mood, I would have probably not given the game another try and because I am also part of a 200 man fleet in Star Citizen (or will be when it is released properly), I could have gone and told all them not to bother with this game. Not everyone would listen but some might have.

On a completely unrelated matter, I have just tried the game out again and had a play with the controls. I have set mouse mode to absolute pitch/roll, put lateral movement on the WASD keys and throttle on my mouse wheel and I have killed the guy from mission 3 first attempt. It wasn't pretty and my ship took quite a bit of damage but I got him :D

Now I just need to figure out the rest of the controls for power distribution.

If you play keyboard / mouse only; I suggests you take a look at Voice Attack ( http://www.voiceattack.com ) as it is a great enhancer to smooth out the ancillary controls. ;)

The software is very popular with many here and is cheap to boot. ;)

I have seen a video on this and am definitely interested in it. How easy is it to set up the commands for Elite?

Can I ask why you don't use a joystick? You do not need a HOTAS, it is overkill for Elite and SC IMO (I used to have a Warthog and was a massive flight sim nut for many years but sold it all recently) and a basic stick with a throttle on is more than sufficient. The Thrustmaster T16000 is a great stick as it has many of the same internals as the Warthog stick and very responsive or even the Mad Catz FLY 5 is great too.

One thing that I think a high-end HOTAS would offer, is analogue control of the directional thrusters. I plan to get a stand alone CH Pro throttle to go with my t16000m, for just that reason. For the time being (a) they are out of stock (or ridiculously expensive) everywhere in the UK and (b) I have plenty of headroom to get better with what I already have

Well the simple answer of course would be that I don't like using them, the long answer would be that I'm much better with mouse and keyboard, I have enough things on my desk without worrying about one more thing and I don't play very many games that require a joystick. Also I have already spent £100 on this game and want to know I'm going to enjoy it before spending even more money. I have just bought voice attack though so I'll give that a try.

Hopefully the game will have a series of optional tutorial missions explaining at the very least the basics of the game, at release or before.

EDIT: Hopefully before so the tutorial is well tested by newcomers.

That makes no sense, why would any sane person decide to control their ship that way?

Because otherwise the game comes down to

Turreting

You just sit in 1 spot or move very slowly while aiming in every direction like a turret

it's horrible.

It can also make combat very easy and almost reduced to who hits first...kind of what it is like now at times if I am honest.
