Rinse & Repeat =?

Just a rant.... I wonder how others feel about that. Personally, I am getting somewhat annoyed about an in game aspect of gathering mats to be able to try engineering. In particular scenarios like run in circles, log out, log in, run in circles, log out, log in... rinse & repeat. After a short while, intended or not, to me it feels like the very stupidity of assembly line torture.

Spending hours with a repetetive task to gather materials that you burn through quicker than light speed if you wish to engineer past G3.

I wish there would be more intelligent game scenarious for mats wihtout this endless log out/log in, to me it is the worst aspect of the game. YMMV.

With the exception of surface materials (iron, etc) and the silly guardian obelisk day, you can just play the game (but actually drop into some signal sources on your way to somewhere, fight when it comes up etc) and end up getting materials.

My advice is just don't ever re-log, and try to see upgrades as something that will happen over time, rather than your current and only goal.

Missions often offer G4/5 mats as payment, Bounty Hunting gathers materials nicely, so does BH'ing in a Res...
As @Drelthar mentioned, USS/HGE will give mats, scanning every ship you see can pile up data (and occasionally help you spot 'danger' before it interdicts you) as you go along your happy way.

Even surface missions give you the opportunity to mine for raws.

Doing a loop, e.g. Dav's Hope,Jameson Crash, will gather mats while being boring to the point of catatonia...

Plenty to be found in everyday play, without 'grinding' if you so choose :)

I was doing that too for a while, but without a certain level of engineering, it sucks in combat, does it not?

Engineering is essential to the game, and the amount of choices requires lots of mats to be able to try out certain engineerings. I do not like to spoil that by reading up what is the best engineered for what module, hence I also waste mats for bad engineering choices, jusyt for trying out how that worls, which is the fun part, the grinding of gathering absolutely not.

NPC combat is very possible with even light engineering, provided you don't go chasing after elite big ships in a real lightweight - not that it isn't possible :)

I know about missions, but getting 1 exquisite focus crystal... for eample.... is ridiculous.

No doubt you already know being allied to the mission giver increases the liklihood of 'good' offers, if you are not getting them try somewhere else (my home station for my alt is terrible for mat giving missions, the stations in the next system gives plenty)

P.S. I realise I am venting... having a bad day, and needing more mats as well.... both together made me moan here, sorry. LOL :)

No worries about having a moan :) And it was done in a very polite way 👍

Well, Engineers were designed to be a time sink from the very beginning, that's their purpose.

The train of thought wasn't "Okay, this is what the Engineers will be able to do. How much time should players invest to accomplish this?"

It was the other way around. "Okay, this is how much time we want players to 'waste'. How high do the rewards have to be so players still bother?"

Voilà, Engineers v1.

Doing this, I can fully understand why people quit the game. Don't do this if you wan't to keep your sanity. Grinding is optional, always.
People will say "no you need to grind to do anything in this game!". No, no you don't. Me and many others are livable proof that you don't. 4000+ hrs and not a single second grinding.
Play the game and all the features and things you can do, and you'll get your materials. On the other hand, if you expect to fully engineer your 19 ships in a weekend... well, better get grinding.

Sorry if I come on as harsh and direct, but the truth sometimes hurt

Not really, if you want to PvP, well, yeah, you'll be up against the most grind mental hyper focussed nut cases in any game I've seen, but it's perfectly viable to engage in combat with NPC's without having a G5 fully engineered corvette.

Just pick your battles. There are ships from sidewinder to cutter, that goes for NPC's too.

Don't try and fight an elite anaconda in a stock sidewinder and you'll be fine.

I just love when the MC's in front of me start thunder and lightning. ;)

Strip mining is a pretty decent source for raw mats if you don't want to drive around in an SRV.

I sort of understand the OP, but I think once you accept that you don't need to G5 every single module from the get go, and just be opportunistic (I try to fit a collector limpet on most of my ships, especially the multirole ones) it stops being a chore and the mats start piling up in time, and the ones missing can be traded. This applies more to PvE to be fair and I understand PvP enthusiasts need every single advantage they can get.

The only mats I found a massive chore to obtain were Obelisk data and certain Guardian mats, in order to unlock Guardian gear.

Guess why I still have no Guardian FSD booster. ;)
I found that to be the easiest module to unlock (or maybe because it was the first... definitely worth it though!).

It was more the various weapons (as you need to unlock each size and type individually). Although I also admit I benefited from an early bug in the game where you received blueprints of all types every time you scanned an obelisk... I'm swimming in those bleedin' things:p

The "just play the game" advice is just biowaste though.

There are many different ways to play the game and a lot of them won't give you the materials you need/want.

For example, who seriously stops in a CZ to pick up materials unless that's exactly what they're after. You have to go out of your way sometimes to gather materials.

Guess I need to increase armour damage sources here. I swap 5D Hullreenforcements for fuel scoop and limpet controllers, other than that, I still want Grade 5 thruster and shields and unlock the dreaded Dweller. Hehehe

What do you want for them? How about 200 tons of painite. LOL
