Roadmap leaked??

I still wonder why FDev seems so keen on getting into the inevitable multiple comparisons between NMS, Star Citizen and Elite (not mentionning all the other less AAA titles like Starbase, Dual Universe, etc.) On those walk-around, base building aspects, Elite can hardly win. Seems to me they should build on what Elite does best and what makes it stand out, not what makes it blend in the trend. But heh, what do I know.

The tens of thousands (or more) new players that will buy Elite when the space legs base building update is released will greatly compensate for that. There's probably new character, base and ship interior cosmetics.
Like I said; good for those that want it. But I wonder how many other long-time Elite players will be turned off by these changes. Glancing through this thread it doesn't seem I'm alone.

Only the beancounters can tell whether it's better to have a bunch of new but mostly short-term players join or whether it's better to maintain a strong set of long-term players/evangelists for the game. For sure it'll look good on the balance sheet for that quarter, but what will the quarters after that show?

If space legs are being implemented I really hope they work well with vr. Then again there's always the possibility of not buying the dlc so issue solved. Unless you need legs for some interesting new gameplay, besides walking around.
Main thing is, don't screw vr up Fdevs, pretty please! 😄

Also I'm thinking the leak is intentional.

I guess if space legs and base building aren't your thing then you can carry on playing the existing game. I'll happily base build and stroll around, but I still won't like the large number of planets that can't be landed on. In that aspect ED will still be behind Frontier (the game).

Well, that's the crux there:
A new player means a game sold. Short term player is not someone who will spend money for cosmetics.
A long term player is more likely to spend money in the store for cosmetics for a game he likes than someone who just popped in and bought the game on a special deal. What you'd want is a long term player who keeps spending money. One shot income (aka game sold) is one thing - keeping them around to spend more is the other.

And players won't stick around if they don't like the game.
I have purchased plenty of paint jobs and ship kits for the ships I like and (used to) fly a lot.
Looking at the latest paint jobs... no thanks. Looking at the current state of things... no thanks.

So basically just HOPE that it will bring on a lot of new players?

If they don't fix the game in general, some new player might come due to base building and legs, but leave again after seeing the mess and grind loops. And reviews do influence people.

I know that many of the 'I don't like things that are different from 1984' are older games with limited presence on general gaming communities, but space legs is by far the #1 desired dlc for this game by a massive margin.

Anyone who likes flying spaceships bought ED. This game is by far the best in that niche and has been for sale so often, that market is dry. But anytime anything space legs come up the wider gaming communities go into a frenzy. There is a huge market, and FD is a business.

For the same reason every burger joint offers fries: it is what the overwhelming majority of customers want, and it makes no sense not to add it. Regardless of your personal opinion of fries, or any assumption that people who do like fries don't really like burgers like you do, or will just eat fries once and never return etc etc.

People like fries with burgers, burger joints that offer fries sell more burgers. Period.

No it isn't. Stop 'saying things in sharp contrast with reality'.

Agree, to say it is broken and frontier have done nothing is just not accurate.

That said the fact Adam Burke-Waite clearly hadn't thought about VR when they announced the FSS, David Braben's dislike of VR (he referred to it as very niche or something in an article CBA to dig it out) and the fact they've stopped advertising it as a VR title (blatantly on their site I know it can still be bought on Oculus store etc.).

also, some smaller things like the jumps remaining being tiny and hard to read. I get the sense Fdev are falling out with VR I hope not as I would likely put the game down if it got dropped (at which point stuff can be hazzed by all), but looking at how they view VR now vs how they sold it at the beginning it does seem to have slipped.

the fss is perfectly usuable in vr. the april patch brought nice performance improvements for vr modes. you guys should really stop it with all the doomsaying.

It's speculating not doom saying it is usable but it's also not as usable as non VR for example the orbit lines don't appear in VR by do on a normal screen.

and this is a thread all about leaked info on the future and speculation on what that might mean so throwing some thoughts around (which I have said on a number of posts aren't based on a great deal) about what may be the future of VR doesn't seem out of place.

While there are a number of forumites who don’t wish to see / use a Legs expansion in their spaceship game, I think it’s worth remembering that the ability to walk around in Elite Dangerous is a stated long-term goal of the game’s development... first stated during the Kickstarter in 2012.

I hope any future expansion supports VR, I really don’t want to go back to monitor ED :)

First person VR locomotion is a mixed bag for me. In LA Noire, where elevation changes are minimal and distances to walk are short, it works wonderfully.
Skyrim modded to full locmotion is on the other hand too much for me. I have enough VR hours not to get outright sick, but once I put off the HMD I realize I'm sweating and it just doesn't feel right.

As about spacelegs, the disproportionate resources to make it right makes me think it will be flawed and/or delayed. To have it right in the Elite world with meaningful content is pipe dream IMHO.

Thing is, atmospheric landings are also a long term goal since early development. Just look at Frontier and First Encounters which are what Elite aims for from day 1, plus lots of new stuff. The reason I am less and less satisfied with where the game goes, is that it seemed to have lost that goal a bit. Atmospheric landings are a crucial part of what is missing in ED to really make it a sequel to these awesome games.

That said, I'd love to be able to run around in my ship, do repairs, walk around in stations and on planet surfaces and so on. It's just the last thing on my list.
First finish the space faring part in a space sim game before creating a walking around part.

I'm not sure where people get that from since, at least for me, the orbit lines do show up in VR (in the FSS).. although they seem to regularly turn themselves off for some reason (both in VR and non-VR) since the last update. Or perhaps my VA is playing up.

End of 2020 isn't delayed? In 2012 you assumed it would take 8 years?

For the fss when you discover a body the orbit lines for that body should show up the larger orbit lines from stars etc work in vr but the individual body orbit lines dont show up

But VR is still very niche and it was even more so when the interview with DB was made.
